I heard that sunlight through a window wonít cause your skin to make vitamin D because window glass protects against most UVB exposure.

Wow, I love this topic.  My son and I are both Os and tan easily, while my daughter and husband are As and they burn.  I consider myself a sun worshipper, and living up north has been very very hard.  There is no sun in the winter up here, only grey.

Regular windows may let in some ultraviolet, but many newer windows have uv barriers.

I wear a T-shirt as much as possible in the winter, to expose my arms.  I need to get my hot tub working again, once we can knock out the hornet nest.  That's about the only way I can stand to be bare skinned in the cold  (in a swimsuit).  I get cold going out in a T-shirt, though a warm vest might help with that.  Most days it's just warm enough that I can get warm by exercise, despite goose bumps on my arms.  For SAD, I think I've read that the retina, the inside of the elbows and the back of the knees soak up most of the happy rays.  For vitamin D, I think you just want to get as much skin exposed as possible.

I've been wanting to invent a UV Vitamin D shirt for winter (kind of like the swimsuits you can tan through).  It would have to carry warnings on it, but that would certainly be warmer than bare skin.

Oh, they have been invented:
http://www.tanthrough.com/shirtafct.htm

They have nothing on their website about vitamin D, it's all about cosmetic tanning, so I sent them an email.  If the fabric is like spf 6, then you should be able to get more D with them on than with a regular shirt, and I could wear a long sleeve shirt out there!

...that is if they make a long sleeve version.  If not, I'd at least absorb more in less time in one of their short sleeve shirts.

Hm.  It's hard to get sun on the backs of your knees, your eyes, and the insides of your elbow all at the same time.  lol

it is pretty easy if you go out for a run daily, wearing shorts and a sleeveless tee!
provided there s sunshine and not raining!

Or not snowing or sunny but below freezing temperature.
How does the shirt let through the sun?

That was a good read on the P53 Gene link that lola provided. But it talked about the P53 as the Guarding Angel in preventing Cancer but nothing on tanning. I'd sure like to see Dr D in the future possibly in one of his Blog's give his assessment about which Blood Types or Geno Types are more inclined to express this Gene or maybe there is no correlation with them.

This is kinda funny about me but my legs which never get sunshine are very light in color as but every day my arms get sunshine as i work outdoors alot as they are as very brown and they are the same dark color as my co workers arms from Chihuahua Mexico and yet i'm Caucasian. Infact they call me El Neglito in Spanish as they like to joke to me about that..lol..

Love to see a poll on what is your Blood and/or Geno type and do you tan or burn from exposure of the sun.

I've heard of water soluble ADEKs (the four fat soluble vitamins in a water soluble form), maybe it's something similar.  Would be nice to have something without the A and E.
