The original BTD books did not list stocks and broths. It did say that things not listed, but made with rated ingredients would be the same rating as whatever their ingredients were and that unlisted items are considered neutral. Therefore, as an AB, I thought that I could not have chicken or beef broth/stock because they are made from chicken and beef both of which are AB avoids.

After I found these forums I found out that it was true for the chicken because lectins in the chicken cooked out into the broth/stock and made it an avoid, but I could have beef broth/stock because what made beef an avoid did not effect broths/stocks made from beef. This opened up a whole lot of taste possibilities for me that I had been avoiding - French onion soup for example.

Unlike the BTD book the GTD book does have listings for beef and beef stocks/broths (bone soup, marrow soup) and for chicken but not for chicken stocks/broths. Like the BTD things that are unlisted but made with rated items are supposed to be considered the same as their individual ingredients ratings and things completely unlisted are considered neutral. Since one type of stock is listed and the other is not I would assume that I could have chicken stocks & broths and that they would be neutral because the beef stock is listed specifically and the chicken is not...but I do know about BTD and it's chicken lectin issues and am wondering if the chicken stock/broth is okay to use or not...

The GTD chicken rating further muddies this for me because it has chicken as possibly acceptable for me as a neutral since it's a black dot for me instead of an out and out avoid like it was on the BTD. As we already know many things change ratings from one diet to the other.

Anybody know the answer to this one? Thanks in advance!

So glad you are asking this question...

I've been guessing that the BTD guidelines still apply... and that I should avoid chicken broth. I wish the GTD foods were listed in all three categories like the BTD. Listing the neutrals would save us all a lot of time searching for answers!

if chicken is now a blackdot for you, then so is the stock...

Ditto!... thank you Lola...

I guess I'll be making turkey broth from now on. I examined the ingredient list of every commercial turkey broth in the store, and none of them are avoid-free. Of course, hfcs... but some included chicken broth!
