I figured we needed a thread just entitled Chocolate so here it is! And man I wanted to share this. I've always looked for ways to cook nutritious items that are delicious. It makes me so happy to eat them knowing they are good for me. So today I'm thinking how can I get this Nutritional Yeast into something that I can tolerate today. (I know alot of people like it)... but it is a bit strong for me. At any rate I thought what about my usual little chocolate mixture treat! So here's what I did: 2 tbl Green and Black Organic Sugar free chocolate powder 2 tbl Agave Syrup 1/4 tsp ghee 1 Tsp Nutritional yeast It makes it almost like a butternut chocolate! It's great! Since I'm participating in the diamond food thread, I'm really trying to find ways to work those diamonds in and so this makes me very happy! |

Hey, that sounds worth a try, even if I only get one diamond for it. I used to sprinkle nutritional yeast on popcorn, but that's a forever avoid for me right now. Thanks for the idea, funkymuse. |

I'm pretty sure nutritional yeast is the same as Brewers Yeast - at least that what the Whole Foods folks told me when I ask for it.

I can't believe after years of popcorn and corn being an avoid, that after 3-6 months I can have it again!!! Lordy Lord! I love corn tortillias with butter on them! And you are welcome.. I love sharing these ideas! I also like your tag: Life is a Banquet!!! Now that's a positive outlook! |

nutritional yeast is what they call "primary grown for human consumption", in other words, it is grown on media (such as beets), the flavor is sweeter. Brewer's yeast, on the other hand, is a byproduct of the beer brewing industry, grown on hops, and can be (depending on the brand)quite bitter, recommended in the Diabetes Health Library book as a natural source of chromium. |

When I googled it, I found something that said it was grown on molasses. Regular brewer's yeast is definitely bitter; nutritional yeast has a sort of cheesy-nutty flavor. In fact, I found a recipe for vegan pesto that substitutes NY for parmesan cheese...I might try some on my rice noodles tomorrow:
1-1/2 cups fresh basil 1/3 cup olive oil 1 cup pine nuts (or almonds or walnuts) 5 cloves garlic 1/3 cup nutritional yeast 3/4 tsp. salt (1/2 tsp. black pepper)
Process everything together until nuts are ground. It should not be completely smooth though; leave a little texture. |

Now that makes me salivate. Those of you who feel like you've sometimes lost the "yum" factor, try this. How can you beat pesto with nutritional yeast on rice noodles? Man. I might have to pass on the chocolate and n. yeast combo. Unless y'all say it's really, really good. Then I'll try. |

Question: Will nutritional yeast ferment if it's combined with a sweetener? There are no active enzymes in it. Just remembering a long-ago conversation with a long-ago roommate. |

If I feel the need of nutritional yeast I just stir some up in water and drink it down. Taste wise, b. yeast and n. yeast are as far removed from each other as day and night to me. The last brewers' yeast I tried tasted even worse than it did forty years ago, and it was bad then! Nevertheless, I would stir up a fourth of a cup in juice and drink it with a straw because it made me feel so wonderful. Gave it to my sons, too, when they were small. They got used to the taste while they were young and would even actually ASK for it! Incredible! My mother-in-law used to feed it to her cats and they loved it. |

It's good. Start with 1/2 tsp instead of a full one. BUT use the Brewers Yeast. I can't imagine using the other due to how they say it tastes! |

I would use the nutritional for anything sweet though..... the brewers is more for savory stuff......I use it instead of grated cheese in recipes..... |

Okay, I tried it, and it's gooooooood. I don't think it needs as much salt as the recipe specifies, but that's a matter of taste. Resist the urge to eat it by the spoonful...it's rich. And dare I point out, to any Teachers who are in the diamond food contest, this is a 4-diamond food (5 if you use almonds or walnuts). |

IB, I have left it in my fridge for over a year and still felt good benefits from it. It may not ever get old, for all I know! Maybe it just diminishes as time goes on. Here is a quote from the web - link follows IF it works:

Speaking of children liking it, my AB daughter loves it. She asks for it. She likes lettuce with olive oil, sprinkled with a little sea salt and n.yeast. |
