Thought of posting this in "Teaching Moments", but not sure if that forum is just for BTD-related teaching moments or wuh. So, better safe than sorry, I'm posting it here in GTD Central.
It seems this author didn't even get her genotype straight before pronouncing judgement on the diet (she deduced that she is a Gatherer, yet in the "diary" section of her piece, she notes that her lower legs are LONGER than her upper legs: ).
My fave line from the piece is this (although there were so many to chose from): "If people ate a so-called toxic food, they wouldn't become ill or sick or even gain a large amount of weight."
Well, I could eat a piece of plastic right here and right now and probably not become ill or sick--not ill OR sick, mind you, neither one *lol*--or gain any weight. In fact, plastic has no calories, far as I can discern. Probably it's a good weight-loss food because it probably makes you burn more calories to process it out than it packs onto you. Yet no one could accurately argue that eating plastic is not toxic if done over the long haul, or that eating plastic is a better idea for me than eating a piece of organic turkey. Just because you don't necessarily drop dead on the spot from eating something, doesn't mean that it is among your ideal food choices, not discernable from any other food in terms of value to you. It doesn't mean that it isn't, in fact, toxic to you.
P.S. AND she bemoans the fact that she has to keep referring to book to see if meal she is making contains superfoods or TTAs and it takes too long and waaaaaaaaaaah! After one day, she is abandoning it on those grounds!
News flash: ANY diet on planet earth is going to involve you taking a certain period of time, commonly referred to as a "learning curve", to actually FAMILIARIZE yourself with what foods are recommended and which ones aren't, etc. Heck, I remember going on Weight Watchers years ago and it was like a massive undertaking (this was with their classic, now-defunct, "Selection Plan") to plan out the entire week's menu, shop for everything, figure out how many exchanges or whatever they were called of protein and how many of this and how many of that I had in each meal and then for each day, weigh and measure everything precisely, etc. But again, ANY diet, even the easiest ones to follow in practice, require the user to:
1. Read the diet. 2. Learn it. 3. Do it.
If she is going to chuck it to the four winds because: "OMG times 10! I'm so confused! Keep having to look in book to see whether recipe I want to make for dinner contains any Gatherer super or toxic foods.", then you know what, honey, you are not suitable material for following any diet. I mean, God forbid you have to refer to the book on Day One!!! Oh, the horror. THE HORROR! Who can blame you for chucking it after that horrendous experience? "OMG times 10!" I hope you really did get your genotype wrong and aren't a Gatherer, because you aren't well suited to contend with a life-long weight challenge, that is fo sho.

These types of reviews are always fronted behind a screen composed of the various dietetic associations. The idea of this type of review is to discourage people from ever reading the book, since once most people do open it they would be inclined to form their own opinions. The fact that they single out the naturopathic angle is a clear sign that there is professional turf battling going on.
A whole system is a living system is a learning system.’ -Stewart Brand
I don't understand why the dietetic associations would want to attack you. Your diet plans encompass all the healthy diets...There's low-carb,(O) low fat vegetarian (A) and weight watcher type.. or south beach (B).
This is so odd, you would think they'd want you to publish books on a plan that helps everyone's tastes in diet plans..I really don't get why they're attacking you like that.

Unfortunately, outrageously, and frighteningly, most of the major dietetic associations are totally in corporate bed with Big Agribiz, as they are heavily funded by giants that actually represent a massive conflict of interest with their goal of being purely about educating on, and promoting, healthy diets. Thus the "information" they put out is utterly corrupt and suspect to the max. For example, the American Dietetic Association is sponsored by Coca-Cola (hello: conflict of interest! JUNK FOOD!), Glaxo-Smith-Kline (hello: conflict of interest! BIG PHARMA, wants us all sick so they can sell us meds!), Pepsico (!), Unilever (Uber Evil! They ruined Breyer's Mint Chip--they must be stopped!) General Mills (Wheat pushers! Corn syrup ALERT!), Kelloggs (Ditto!), etc. See this link if you find that to be just too incredible to believe (btw, ironically, the link is called "eatright"--ha!):

I wrote her a note, that once she s through trashing and doing what she was asked to do by her 'dietetic associations'.....''you might want to give this diet a serious try, your gut will thank you for it!''
hope she gets the message!
also added: ''There s very little you can do to discourage people from reading the book, in fact, articles like yours only help promote the book and the science behind it, cause people in general are inclined to form their own opinion !!''

OH! I never realized the Junk Food giants were the ones.. How horrible..
Isn't it? It is almost too incredible to believe that the ADA can even have that list of corporate sponsors and still be taken seriously as an organization that is purely about educating on a healthy diet, on behalf of those they are educating. It is obvious that quite the opposite is true: they exist to push corn syrup, wheat and drugs to the consuming public, otherwise known as their "marks". They do this like a drug dealer who pushes drugs on behalf of the sponsoring cartel.
Sad, but true.

Letter to the editor re "Body Typing is Unproven Science"
I think that Ms. Ogilvies article on The GenoType Diet is extremely unfair and inaccurate, and really does your readers a disservice, as it basically trashes and dismisses a diet that is very customized, cutting edge and healthy. The author states that she abandoned the diet after one day becausehorror upon horrorsshe actually had to refer to the book to see which foods are recommended for her type and which arent. Correct me if Im wrong, but isnt it the case with ANY diet plan that the user thereof would first have to familiar her or himself with the diet itself? If having to refer to the book on Day One is too much for her, then I think we have a user problem, not a problem with the diet itself. Beyond that, the author has typed herself incorrectly. I am a Gatherer myself and thus I know that if her lower legs are LONGER than her upper legs, she isnt a Gatherer. But beyond all that, the main gripe I have with the article is that it dismisses this truly outstanding and excellent diet out of hand and repeatedly states that there is no science behind it. Anyone who actually reads the well-written, complex-yet-clearly-described concepts laid out in the book will see that indeed this is a scientifically elegant plan, customized to the individual to an exquisite degree, and it involves whole, pure, deeply nourishing foods that will optimize the health of the person who is able to actually withstand the rigors of having to refer to the book and familiarize her or himself with the diet. In short, the science is sound, the diet is revitalizing and health-bestowing, and I hope the public will judge for themselves instead of going by the instantaneous dismissal put forth in the article.

Lola, it would be good if you wrote to the editor, too, because if the editor gets enough letters from the likes of us, perhaps s/he will publish one, several or all of them, and thus we can counteract this yahoo's bogus review with some truthful PR on the GTD!

This is a great link to reread. After having breast cancer, I tried very hard for several years to do the McDougall diet. Whenever I increase animal fat, as I did when I went on the Hunter diet, I get a little nervous. This reassured me that I'm still on the right track with the GTD/BTD.

I went on the WW point diet a few years ago because I was in sort of a rut and decided that might give me the nudge I needed to get back on track. (I was eating too much chicken, but I didn't know that until GTD came along!) I stayed completely on the BTD while I was counting points. Lost over 12 pounds, too, in no time. There wasn't any problem at all - just as you say! One reason I lost so fast may have simply been because I was limiting the amount of chicken I was eating to keep my points down.

Megan Ogilvie, 'Vie' means life! And your article on the GTD states the complete opposite!!

Anyone else who feels fired up, take that fire and run with it all the way to zapping off a fabulous letter to that editor. Edna, That was excellent! A Gatherer was needed to accurately rebuff her. Of course my letter was better...JUST KIDDING! I have a few years of reading to catch up on from Dr. D. Spring, I hear ya'. I got hypoglycemic, dizzy and migraines on the weight watchers points plan. I just received a response from the editors and they want my contact information. At least I know it got there!!
