Well I thought I had seen it all. On the GTD board somebody is saying that Splenda is a neutral for Nomads because it isn't listed in the avoids column like aspartame is. It does say no diet colas so by implication I would say no Splenda. |

Isn't that true? It's neutral if not listed in the avoids. |

Splenda is a tradename for sucralose. Check your list again. If it isn't on it, you are okay. |

Well like a lot of other BTD avoids, if it doesn't specifically say it is okay I am going to assume it is not okay. Especially when they list perfectly good substitutes that are beneficials. |

gulfcoastguy, Over on the GTD message board, I looked up sucralose for Katie by looking in the book in the Nomad list and it didn't appear there. I was under the impression that this meant it was neutral since it is listed in "Tested For" food list. I myself would never use an artifical sweetner, but I was just trying to answer her question. I didn't mean to imply that it was healthy for her, but just that it was a neutral because it isn't listed as a 3-6 month avoid or a toxin.

Well I will say that I could have phrased it better. At the time I was dealing with nearly breaking my knee cap in a fall. My main point was BTD to GTD contradictions and frustration. Sucralose is only listed as an avoid for gatherers. Some varieties of sucralose ,such as the one listed for baking in the store, have corn sugars added. So I permanently checked it off my list. I guess the answer to is it okay would depend on reading the ingredients as usual. |

It's neutral for me and I still avoid it. I don't like artificial sweetners. I use stevia. |

As always, just because something is a neutral does not mean that you have to use it. I won't be using any. But it is available for moderate (occasional) use by most GTD'ers based on the ratings. |

I realize that (at least in the context of the BTD) Dr. D has said that any food that hasn't been tested may be considered a Neutral. My assumption is that this is because he doesn't want to say, "Don't eat anything that isn't on the list."
My own feeling is that if it hasn't been tested, it's not a Neutral, it's an Unknown, and can be treated like an *Infrequent* Neutral. Once it's tested, it may indeed turn out to be a Neutral (or a Beneficial or an Avoid) -- but at this point, we simply DO NOT KNOW, so it doesn't pay to eat it frequently.

Sugar, both brown and white, is a Nomad toxin to avoid. Splenda is a brand name for an adulterated/tinkered-with product which the makers of go out of their way to tout as tasting like sugar "because it is made from sugar". Made from toxin to avoid = toxin to avoid, in my book. |
