How many Warriors do badly with grains? I have gluten and rice intolerance... I'm trying to follow the Warrior diet but I'm not eating any grains. I'm a lower carbing Warrior.. MOOOOOAHAHAHAHAH!.
Grains are not a problem here, but if I ate less I would have more of that svelte Warrior figure that I hear about.
I'm doing all right on the grains myself, but I don't indulge in them except at breakfast and a small bowl of gluten free oatmeal before bedtime. (I was using regular until I found the gluten free, and it seems better suited for me. Maybe it is just a better quality oatmeal - I don't know!) I would enjoy rye crackers if I could find some that didn't have corn bran or some other corn product in them. I have homemade spelt rolls and bread in the freezer, but I have only had one-half slice of the bread since starting on the GTD. For some reason, eating all these seeds and nuts in one form or another, I don't seem to have much desire for grains just now.
I tolerate grains without gluten but as far as weight loss, I suspect at this point, I don't know what is keeping me from losing weight on this Warrior diet. It might be the grains but it might be the nuts or the ghee or the randomness of me grabbing a handful of nuts when it might be putting me over a certain caloric requirement for the amount of energy I expend.
I suspect it's that I'm not being diligent with portion control.
I remember years ago when I followed a diet plan similar to Weight Watchers, I'd choose from food categories based on my weight ,and my food intake allowance was calibrated to contain calories that would support a person who wanted to weigh 15 pounds less (the amount of weight I wanted to lose) .
But I still think it was a calorie based diet as to why I was able to lose weight. I remember my total allowance for the day for protein was about 8 oz. (and that included eggs or cheese, fish, poultry) but when it came to grains or bread, in a day, this diet was portioned to give me no more than the equivalent of 2 slices of bread. Starchy vegetables were limited and measured. I got 3 fruits per day.
What I remember that helped me the most to lose weight was the awareness of my fat intake. I was only allowed about a tablespoon of fat per day and that could be from oils, butter, mayo or anything. It was many years ago and I still remember how fast I lost weight.
So, there is something about each person's constitution that either allows them to eat more carbs or eat more fats. I know I'm someone who always did better on a lower fat diet with higher complex carbs. But I still need adequate protein. It's not that I feel better, it's simply a better way for me to lose weight.
BUT, complex carbs isn't always more grains. I am someone who seems to need to watch portions and control my fat intake as well.
I make muffins using quinoa flour, amaranth flour, almond flour, ground flax and chia seeds and I puree dried cooked apricots and peaches combine for sweetness. I bake muffins in a MINI muffin pan so my portion is the size of a golf ball.
I don't know if portion control is the way to lose weight for people who have difficulty losing. At the end of the day, if you add up your total calories and you haven't expended enough energy by exercising to burn off the fuel, you won't lose weight easily.
My dog gained 4 pounds. I lowered her food intake by 1 oz per day. At the end of 10 weeks, she lost the 4 pounds. It was a simple caloric adjustment. I don't think I'm any different when it comes to using my total calories each day.

Thanks! I just hope Dr. D. doesn't see this.. The other night I had whiting. It was ok. smothered in ghee and lemon. I have to try to hide the taste.
I also stopped all sugar except I count some raw honey in there.
I really liked the old weight watchers plan. I thought I did better on that plan than the new points system. I was on it when I was a teenager, and I had eaten too many ring dings, and twinkies. I lost 25 pounds on it. I was pretty satisfied. You could have up to 6 ounces of chicken or fish per meal but only 3 oz of red meat. 3 or 4 starches a day! My favorite was when I could have sphaghetti and meatballs! (I'm Italian) But my mom did all the cooking! You know Italian moms, great cooks! It's easier to stay on a plan when your mom cooks for you
A lot of the vegetables were free so I'd snack on them without guilt. I do remember the one tablespoon of oil allowed per day, and I think it was 2 cups of dairy allowed a day with 3 fruits. I can't even follow the new weight watchers points. I got dizzy and it kept triggering migraines. I'd lose a 1/2 pound a week. I was "starving" on it all the time. Same with Nutrisystem..

I lost weight on the points program with WW, but I did not do well afterwards. I think keeping active is the key for me to losing weight on the Warrior diet. When I feel well, I want to be very busy, so I am gradually losing weight on this diet because I DO feel well and am keeping busy.
I don't over indulge in ghee, I don't eat mayo at this point, I season my vegggie proteins with salt only, I season my live foods with salt and a small smount of olive oil, but I do have a reasonable amount of nut butters and seeds, and, of course, natural oils in fish. Oh, and I take supplements. This is working for me, and I'm so glad to be feeling well.

You go...girl (?). Sorry don't know your gender. You sound like you're doing great!
My eating needs some tweaking. Let me tell you when I go low fat, I start having inflammation and pain in my joints! I used to follow a low fat diet and lost a lot of weight but as I got older, my body is rejecting a low fat diet! At first I couldn't figure out why I was having such joint pain and then I realized I was on a low fat diet. Within a few hours of having a tablespoon of EVOO, my pain disappeard! Then I knew I couldn't follow an extremely low fat diet anymore. I was eating chicken and turkey. Did any other A's have that probem? I wonder if it's an immune disorder.

The original Weight Watchers plan worked really well for me because although it was regimented, I at least knew my limitations. I forced myself to use those free, low carb veggies and fill myself up by making a lot of soups and I honestly focused more on the freebie foods whereas now I'm focusing on the foods that I like more.. It's probably just my personality, but when it comes to dieting I realize that I'm far better when the rules are pretty tight and rigid, otherwise, these open ended foods like ghee , nuts and green olives and other types of fat I love eating are just foods I overdo.
And now with chocolate as a food we should eat, well, try to eat just one small piece when it's supposed to be good for Warriors. I'm not hungry on the Warrior diet, I'm just eating too much food, I think. And it's important to figure out if it's the starch or fats. I know it's not the protein. I'm at the point where I'd like to know what it takes for my body to drop a few pounds. We shouldn't have to be giving up any foods if the Warrior diet was designed to help us lose weight just by eating the foods listed in the book.

It is a strange thing that you aren't losing. I can't remember just off hand if you've mentioned an exercise regimen...? For some reason I am not wanting a lot of chocolate. I have my cocoa, nut butter, vanilla flavoring, maple syrup and Stevia sweetened combo in the fridge which I eat about two and no more than three times per day - a heaping teaspoon each. It depends on how much activity I have going on.
I guess you are going to have to play detective on your servings. But I HATE regimented diets. If I am on one of those, all I think about is food, food, food!!! Now, I don't think about food very much. I will be busy and the first thing I know it is two in the afternoon and I haven't had lunch. It is nearly nine now and I just finished dinner. I eat a balanced meal when I do eat, though, with piles of low glycemic index foods. I love fruit and always have a hefty serving of that. When I have beans, I eat a whole cup so I have plenty of protein. With fish, I just do a normal serving. I know this sounds like a lot of food and it is, but, as I said, I am very active.
Maybe you just need more time for your body to adjust. I think I went into this at warp speed and have not let up. Don't ask me why everything about this diet had to be done last week but that is the way I felt! Maybe I'm just trying to outrun old age creeping up on me.
You go...girl (?). Sorry don't know your gender. You sound like you're doing great!

Oh, I thought everyone knew I was female...! Maybe you're needing some oil supplements, Mayflowers. I take them all the time and have been for years. I also take the supplements recommended for joint health. Of course, if I were crazy enough to eat a steak, I would be almost paralyzed in twenty minutes. I was eating chicken on the BTD, but it was beginning to bother me, and I just didn't want to eat it anymore. I love fish but it always left me feeling that I needed something else. Now, these beans and I are getting along fine. They are very filling and I get plenty of energy from my meals. So it is "so far so good" on this diet for me.
Hopefully, Dr. D. can help you sort all this out soon!

I've been eating more grains on the Warrior diet than I did on the BTD, but am still losing weight. I stay away from wheat as much as possible, so it's mostly rice, oats, and rye that I eat. I still adhere to the one portion per day rule, though.

Mayflowers, are you still in doubt about whether or not you are a Warrior? (looking at your tagline)
Jenny, I'm pretty sure I'm a Warrior. I measured my fingers but I had a question on measuring of my legs because I have hip replacements, so I need Dr. D's expertise.
Spring, Sorry, I look at the Gender indicator under the avatar and you have none. I'm a little new.. How do you eat cocoa? Mind if I ask if your weight is normal for your height?
Drea, as soon as I start eating grains my weight stalls or starts creeping upward. I'm talking a few servings a day. I'm not a huge eater but I have a good appetite. (It's an Italian thing lol)Do you realize we can eat scallops!!! I love scallops! I like mussels too. We can also have heavy cream.
Mock creme' brulee - take a "Bullet" cup put in 1/2 cup ricotta, add 1 or 2 Tbs heavy cream, 2 packets stevia or preferred sweetner and a dash of vanilla extract and a dash of rum extract. Whirl it on the Bullet and you have a dessert to die for. It keeps me on my diet. I also change it by adding coccoa powder to make chocolate brulee'

Interesting. Chicken was beginning to bother me too. I'd given it up since only half the family could eat it anyway, but recently I ate it several weekends in a row. I felt really bad. Chicken didn't bother me before, but once I quit eating it and tried it again, I felt yucky. Isn't that typical, though? Then I discovered my Warriorhood and found I shouldn't have it anyway.
I have found with fish that I have to eat a whole lot of it to be full, or eat a ton of veggies along with it.
Glad beans are working for you.

Mayflowers, I need to lose weight, and I am losing on this diet. Weight loss has always been slow for me - around 3\4 pound per week but as along as I'm losing I'm happy. I feel better losing weight slowly.
As for the cocoa, I'm into everything being as simple as possible after I first started on this diet. I just microwave a few tablespoons of nut butter and start stirring in the other stuff. For cocoa I put in a little over half the amount of the nut butter, but that isn't critical - I have used the same amount of both. It will begin to be very stiff so I add some vanilla, maple syrup and soy milk or other liquid so I can stir it. I add enough Stevia to make it lightly sweetened. If I get the wet dry mix right it is just slightly chewy after being in the fridge and better than any other lightly sweetened chocolate I've tried. I used to roll it into balls then in ground nuts but now I just eat it with a spoon. Simple. Some people add a lot of ghee to theirs but I don't see any sense in eating all that fat myself.
I was making muffins, etc., but now I'm just grinding my flax seed and other seeds or grains and adding it to yogurt with a little maple syrup. This is so simple too. I don't think I will be eating this simply long term but for now my stomach seems to be liking it very well!
It will be very interesting to see if you turn out to be a Warrior!

Same for me with chicken. I now find it disgusting to the point where I honestly think of the live chicken instead of the cooked meat being potential food. This happened when I gave it up and starting eating more fish.
Regarding weight.
I noticed this morning that although the scale isn't moving downward, I tried on a pair of pants that are suddenly too big in the waist. I wonder if it's possible to lose inches without losing pounds on a scale??????

I was somewhat startled and relieved at the same time that chicken was permanently off our list. I had gotten so weary of it! It is sort of strange about fish not being very filling. Of course, eating it fried will fill up a person in a hurry, but I've been avoiding that a long time. I still like it though!
Yes, these beans are finally working for me, thank you! Never thought it would happen but it has.

I too would have many aches and pains if not for the oils I take as supplements: fish oil, GLA.
It's the nuts and ghee and other food fats that I need to monitor because they aren't as high in omega 3 fatty acids as the fish oil (or flax/chia) might be. For people with aches and pains/inflammation issues, it's the omega 3 fatty acids that make a difference.
Nuts are often higher in EFAs other than 3 and seem to upset the delicate balance I find I need to maintain. I've always needed a huge amount of omega 3s in my diet.
Also, does anyone remember a book that was written many many years ago by a doctor by the name of Abravanel? "The Body Type Diet". He described "pear" shaped people as those who did better on lower fat proteins (as the fat seems to go to their butt and thighs) and higher on veggies, fruits and some complex carbs. Apple shaped people got a different diet.
Sometimes the difference in our individual female body shape influences how we should divide our proteins/carbs/fats. For me, a person with a narrow torso and small waist but more pear shaped on my lower half, I've always lost weight on lower fats. Still I need to supplement with a lot of fish oil.

Good info in your post, Cloe. About the fish oil, even on the WW points program I never stinted on my fish oils. Never counted them either! And I still lost weight. Not only does not having my oils make me feel a hundred years old, it makes my skin terrible and I feel depressed. I do not want to be without my Omega 3, Evening Primrose and flaxseed oils.

I couldn't even lose 3/4 pound eating grains. That "chocolate candy" you make sounds good! I'll have to try that. I'm not eating any grains or white refined sugar. I have to get the weight off for my hips. I take fish oil. I tried ALA but I felt weird. I suppose I can try it again. I am confident Dr. D will help me out..he's back from vacation and all rested and I'll be his first challenge. I can be an interesting lab rat.
Yeah, I get hungry an hour later when I eat fish too. It doesn't satisfy me either. I'm more satisfied from beans. I was also shocked the chicken was gone.

For me, the point of ghee is to heal my insides. I can tolerate a little dairy, yogurt specifically (yay!!!), thanks to the addition of ghee to my diet.

Yes, I believe that ghee has helped my stomach, too, but I'd rather have it on something like oatmeal than in my "candy" that already has an astronomical amount of fat in it.

I'm gluten intolerant and I eat rice, but I'm not 100% sure it's a great food for me. Often I take so many supplements for inflammation to curtail my arthritis that I never actually could sense if rice was a problem. I know that chicken bothered me and sometimes uncultured soy is a problem, but, I should honestly try to eliminate rice for a few days and see if I notice a difference. Now I'm eating many different foods from the type A diet, so I'm having to slowly try to figure out if I have any new offending foods. I'm still a work in progress.

It's the butryic acid in ghee that is beneficial for the gut and it's also found in Intrinsa, the NAP supplement Dr. D designed for the digestive problems. I have gotten benefits from this product and I don't have to eat as much ghee.
"Butyric acid is a short chain fatty acid, which supports the health and healing of cells in the small and large intestine, and serves the natural processes of aerobic energy metabolism. Short chain fatty acids can have the protective ability of impeding the proliferation of damaging cells in the colon, and have been associated with helping to maintain healthy blood lipid and sugar levels"

If I can ever get my act together I plan to order a bunch of stuff from NAP - one reason being I'm about to run out of everything I'm taking from them and I want to add a whole lot more. Too much to do right now!

If I eat wheat or anything that has wheat, I get bloated, my knees hurt and I have problems sleeping. Rice is not a problem and I like to add walnuts or green peas, or chestnuts to my brown rice. Oatmeal once and awhile with soya milk seems to be okay. But since I have white lines on my fingers I suspect I am gluten intolerant.
Basically, I have cut down the grains and eat more vegies and protein like fish and beans.
I have taken so many antibiotics in the past, I am wondering what would be a good supplement for my intestines.....
