The white bean is a diamond superfood for warriors. But what white bean? Is it the white navy bean, white kidney bean or is it the white northern bean, or is it any of these white beans? Anyone know

When I look on-line, yes, any of these beans can be called white beans.
However, for the purpose of the GTD food lists, they do not seem to be any of these because white beans are a black dot for Nomads but great northern and navy beans are superfoods and cannelloni and kidney beans are black dots also. Most canned beans I've seen will specify the other common name for the bean (like garbanzo/chickpeas) so I would play it safe and only choose ones that are clearly identified.

Thank you both for your replies. I guess any white bean will do for warriors.
As Kate4975 said not all "white beans" can be eaten by nomands so it's best to check your individual GTD food lists.

Beans, beans, beans. I have had a problem with these beans from the get-go and since that is part of the backbone of my protein on this diet, I take it very seriously. Is it really cannellini or cannelloni? - I have never seen a cannelloni bean in my life and don't really expect to where I live. I'm eating cannellini beans (with an I, in case no one noticed the difference in the spellings!) because that is what I have found. White beans don't exist here, either. Ordering on-line is crazy - how about $3.50 a can by the time you add postage?! And where do you suppose I'm going to find adzuki beans? I haven't tried fava beans yet, but my sister told me they tasted pretty nasty. I WILL try them, though, as soon as I find them......I do wish I lived near a Whole Foods.....But I do realize I'm on my own here, I WILL vent, though..... We warriors don't get a whole lot of sympathy about the fact that some of us are having problems with dairy (can only have it four times per week, anyway), there is NO meat and we can only have fish four times per week. So you see that leaves beans and nuts - what about all that fat in nuts? Boy oh boy, how about SOYBEANS every day (no diamond)? That would try the patience of Job! Where is my armor, I think I am about ready to go to war about these beans! I'm doing all right now with pintos (no diamond), cannellini (don't know WHAT it is), butter beans (no diamond), navy beans (no diamond) and some soy products such as milk which is not even listed. But how long will it be before I get sick of eating this small variety? And, besides none of them are diamonds except possibly the soy milk, which I seriously doubt. We need some help, but I don't expect it, not for a while. I guess Warriors are just supposed to take it on the chin and keep on marching. Well I AM except for the taking without venting!
The only white beans I have ever seen in my region are navy beans and soup beans. I grew up eating both of them when i was able to chew. Maybe they were even mashed up before I had teeth. They were a staple of our diet. Around here they are still a staple of many person's diet. Of course they have ham in them and served with cornbread. It makes my mouth water just thinking about that...oh well... namaste ruthie
Spring (and this applies to lstreat too), you could use fish as a good protein source also. Nuts do have a lot of fat/oil, but it's healthy fat, so I wouldn't be as concerned about that unless you start putting on weight from them (I'm jealous, y'all get PEANUTS as a SUPERFOOD! so not fair.... )

Drive, I mentioned the fish (four times per week) in my post. That amounts to two days' worth of eating. Then there is SOME dairy (only REAL yogurt at this point and it is not high in protein) that amounts to another two days. That leaves three days or six meals to be dealing with no-diamond beans. I love peanuts too, but I haven't eaten them in a long time because of the mold or whatever that was a big scare back yonder. I am trusting Dr. D to be leading us on the straight and narrow allowing us to eat peanuts which I am. I do love nuts, but I do want to lose some weight. I feel great eating these beans, actually, reckon how good I would feel eating diamonds - pretty rich, huh?! I just had peas (diamond but low protein), mustard\greens mix, cantaloupe, onion, half a peach and a muffin (7+ grams protein). I feel stuffed! But the beans keep me from getting hungry for a longer period of time so I want more of them for that reason. But I don't want to get burned out on them, either, because of eating the same ones six meals a week. Sorry you can't have peanuts!
Spring, I guess we have to be more creative with our allowable foods. I'm having too much fish so I have to start including some beans and carbs in this equation. We can have 1/2 cup nuts and seeds 2x day and we can have 1/2 cup grains and cereals 2-3x day. It's time for us warriors to up the ante !
BTW Cannelloni is a pasta so the bean is Cannellini. Enjoy !

Superfood Vegetable proteins for Warriors include Lentils, Navy beans, Green string beans, Peanuts, Peas, Pinto beans, Soy beans and White beans, all of which are usually widely available in U. S. markets...
With all of the soybean based foods included, I should really enjoy soy, but have never acquired a taste for it...
I find them in the dry bean section or soup bean section of the stores... There are places on-line to buy bulk dried beans so you don't have to ship all of the water...

On the BTD I found white northern beans in a bulk food store in Melbourne, Australia and that was great, but now on the GTD I can have ordinary old navy beans, the most ubiquitous bean of all, and that is such a treat. Fava beans are the lovely broad bean, especially special when fresh, so look for it in spring. I will be planting my spring crop soon (it is summer here in Oz at the moment). As a dried bean it is spectacularly boring, but being a good one, could be slipped in small quantities into soups and stews. Jenny
I was once in an Italian restaurant where they made a white bean hummus. It was placed on the table with bread to be used instead of butter. I asked the waiter what was in it. White beans, cilantro, parsley, garlic, sea salt and olive oil. Pretty easy to duplicate although I'm not sure of the proportions. I've managed to make a fairly close replica by using drained white beans from a can and adding just enough olive oil to give it a creamy consistency. It was delicious! I found myself addicted to it!

If it does not have a specific rating (cannellini, navy) then white is pretty much white. You don't need to look for something 'special'.
Quoted from Dr. D
"white beans" is just a generic for any beans of the haricot family. it is not as specific a name as the canelloni, navy, etc. but many people class all of these as 'white beans'.
I was previously a vegetarian for five years, so I can sympathize. If you're on a budget, the cheapest way to enjoy beans is to cook them yourself. I find the recipes on the world's healthiest foods website are very reliable as far as making them turn out well. They have a suggestion to boil them (most kinds) for two minutes then let sit for two hours, then drain, then cook as usual. It works even better than leaving them for a day or two. They suggest putting lentils straight into boiling water instead of soaking- who knew, but it makes yummy dahl. http://www.whfoods.com

String beans have almost zip protein - 1 gram per serving, unless Dr. D expects us to eat a pot full at a time, that is not protein in my book. (How under the sun did this vegetable wind up on the PROTEIN list?!) Soy beans, IMO, are not fit to eat as a dish. I have soy milk (the plain stuff with NO carageenan - I found out a long time ago that stuff is poison!) and use soy flour, but I cannot tolerate soybeans in their original state. I've already explained the problem about white beans. They aren't available here. I'm no monkey, so it doesn't appeal to me to sit down to a plate of peanuts for lunch! So that leaves four options for six meals per week for the rest of my life????? I'm sure that I have relied on protein considerably more than is ordinary during my lifetime because of this borderline hypoglycemia that runs in my family. I came to have an absolute horror of those "weak spells." It isn't unusual for members of my family to literally pass out if they don't get enough protein. I am very active and just cannot tolerate going around feeling weak from lack of protein. You are probably not finding it difficult at all to pick up on my growing irritability and anxiety about this problem! Sorry about that. I hate to resort to turkey twice a week, but I may have to. It seems to be the least criminal of my options. But as you might suspect, it doesn't appeal to me anymore. One thing for sure, I can say this: Even though I get weak betimes, my stomach is not hurting forevermore on this diet, and I cannot remember when it didn't! I think it may have been since I was a child and that was a long time ago! One final note, I have been using NAP protein powder in a smoothie up to a couple of days ago to stave off the protein vacuum. But the number of carbs I'm consuming is unreal...... I even had peanut butter in my oatmeal to have more balance - it would be pitiful if it hadn't tasted so good!!

Thanks, much, for the website and suggestions. Man, I'm going to be cooking all the time at the rate I'm going. I'll have to make my own cottage cheese (got some organic milk tonight to try it - still may not be able to eat it). I did finally find a reliably good yogurt that isn't fake. It is actually cultured with NO added milk and\or cream. I'm already making all the bread. I guess I could cook up a batch of these beans and freeze them. Hey, I'm already getting excited about trying these healthy beans! Yikes, I wish I didn't have so many other things to do right now. I am sore all over from climbing ladders trying to get ready to paint. Patch and sand, patch and sand, ad nauseam.... I've been a steady companion to the caster oil bottle.

HI, In BC we can get white beans at any supermarket (dried). They are what we use to make baked beans. Heinz baked beans are made with white beans. They are little round beans. You must be able to get them at most supermarkets in the 'States 'cause didn't you people invent baked beans? How about in Boston?
No matter where anyone else can buy these white beans, it isn't helping me because they are not to be found around here. Period. There are all kinds of other beans but not white beans.

Well, after several weeks of going round and round with this crazy bean we hear from the man that just about any old white bean will do, basically. Okaaaaaaay! My favorite bean so far is the cannellini. Ummmmmm! I suppose anyone can tell that I have never been too much of a bean consumer. Baked beans were more like a novelty to me rather than a serious addition to a meal. So it is hard for me to get serious about the health benefits of eating TONS of BEANS!!!!! And nuts have always been a snack........
Spring, I can get you adzuki beans for cheap. Would you like for me to mail you a couple of 1 lb. containers?
That is so nice of you, Ribbit! Head me in the right direction and maybe I can get them where you buy them. Do you use Whole Foods? I'm South of you but not too far. I used to be in Atlanta quite often, but the older I get the less I want to deal with that traffic!
I get them at the DeKalb Farmers Market on Ponce De Leon in Decatur. I go there every week and would be happy to get you some, or maybe we could meet up there. That would be fun! I'll PM you.
I go to Whole Foods occasionally, but I can get almost everything I need at the Farmers Market for a whole lot less.

I've started eating beans with sweet potatoes and brussels sprouts with olive oil, seasalt, onion/garlic, turmeric and paprika ... has anybody ever tried this mix ?? It's simply delicious and filling !!

sounds like a perfect match for your type, I suppose.

Hi, I found white Marrow beans on Amazon. This is the link to the big bag, but if you search for marrow beans there are several different sizes you can order.
"I get the White beans from a companty in North Carolina, you have to get them by the case, (24)They are $.99 per can, sclafanifoods.com"
And here is what someone else came back with.
"According to the website you gave these are just" "Great Northern White Beans"
So then the next morning I got this from SteveT at the food club.
"I saw the thread on the forums about white beans. The website does list the "white beans" we are getting as great northern white beans. If they are just great northern beans, why are we buying them?"
Steven
So I looked at a can of beans and it said Small White Beans, so I go to the web site and it now said Great Northern Beans.
So I send a email and canceled our order, I called the company and the big boss was out, would call me back, two days later I called again, still out, so I called this morning again and found out they are just Great Northern Beans.
So now do we stop beleving the labels on the cans?
SteveT has found a outlet for the White Beans.
Kathy found these Marrow (White) Beans on Amazon. They are dry, 50# bag. Is this the bean that we should be looking for? The description says they have a taste like bacon.
The white bean is a diamond superfood while cannellini and navy beans are superfoods, go figure

The Cannellini, Navy, and Great Northern Beans are members of the Haricot Family of beans, The White bean is a member of the Marrow Family of beans.
Special need for lignans, some of the body measurements (waist to hip ratio, body asymmetrices) show a need to balance out certain hormones(androgens and estrogens) to accomplish this, Certain foods which are high in these important plant antioxidants are the White Bean.
Man, we're still at it about these beans! One thing for sure, some of these beans that are not diamonds really make me feel good. However, I am glad to know the families these beans belong to - now, if I could just get the Marrows (using their correct name, of course) to move next door where the Haricots live I would be happy!
I'm trying to imagine how a bacon-tasting bean would taste. I don't think I can wrap my brain 'round that one! It has been so long since I tasted any bacon I've forgotten how it tastes. I guess it would be great to season soup with, though. I think I will order ten pounds of these things and just hope I can live through them!

Not sure that I have ever seen them in stores here, will have to keep my eye out for them.

I tried a recipe last night with white Northern Great beans. I had read in a health magazine instead of mashed potatoes cook white beans and make into a mash potatoe substitute. I tried it last night. COoked the beans in a pan, then drained the juice off. Added a little bit of chicken broth, garlic powder, parsley. I mashed with a potatoe masher. They were a little runny but did not taste bad.

This is worth experimenting with again.
Yes, this sounds very interesting and with ghee on top - yummy!
I was glad to find this thread last night. I had purchased "Tuscan White Bean Hummus" from Trader Joe's several days ago because its base was Great Northern Beans and very few avoids for Type O Secretor (Great Northern White Beans, tahini, canola oil, garlic, soy sauce, salt, lemon juice concentrate, citrus fiber, cultured dextrose, olive oil, sun-dried tomatoes, salt, phosphoric acetic, malid acids, parsley, white pepper, paprika).
I bought it to see if I liked the taste - then I could make it for myself without avoids. I loved the flavors, so I decided to make a batch.
When I went to the health food store to buy beans, they only had "small white beans," so I bought them. After I began the soaking and cooking process, I began to worry about the term "white beans." I did a search on Google and found that "white beans" can be referred to as navy beans. So I read the previous posts here and found I wasn't the only one confused. I also read the link Lola posted about marrow beans, which clarifies what a white bean is. I can't call the health food store until tomorrow to find out whether what I bought is a navy bean or a marrow bean. Such is life.
However, I found a link to a similar recipe (copycat recipe) from California Pizza Kitchens. I will post it if anyone is interested: http://www.cdkitchen.com/recipes/recs/512/California_Pizza_Kitchens_Tuscan_Hummus42329.shtml. I didn't have 30 cloves of garlic on hand so I used the 4 or 5 I had on hand (I like to soft cook them in a little olive oil before adding them to a recipe to take out the bite). I also added some Real Salt Organic Garlic Salt. I used wheat-free tamari, and omitted the cumin and coriander. I tailored the amounts of ingredients called for in the California Pizza Kitchen clone to suite my needs, using only the ingredients listed in the Trader Joe's ingredients.
For the Checca I diced a few sun-dried tomatoes which were in olive oil, mixed in a little dried garlic, and added a little olive oil from the sun-dried tomato jar. I then poured this over the top of the hummus and dipped in. I thought it was quite tasty.
I apologize for adding this to the Genotype post - I'm working from my Type O base. However, if you can eat a white or Northern bean, you can become wonderfully creative in creating a vegetable dip, I think.
I am almost certain that the "white bean" I bought in the health food store was actually a navy bean. I puffed up after eating it.
If you look up "white bean" in the Eating Right Typebase, it is also called a "marrow bean." If Genotype or Eating Right refers to a "white bean," this is what it is referring to - not navy bean.
If you do a search on Google for marrow bean, there are a few places that sell them. I just bought some online, and yes they do look different from a navy bean - they are fat, white, and round.
