I remember vaguely some discussions in the past about nutritional yeast.

I bought a can of KAL (molasses based) at the health food store.  The brand carried in the bins is Red Star.

For those of you that have used nutritional yeast, what brand(s) do you consider to be the best?

I don't know the brand that I use as it comes in bulk (big flaky stuff) and is already pre-packaged in plastic bags.  When I get it home I put it in a sealed ceramic (not glass or see through) canister and keep it in a cool cupboard.

I buy mine in bulk, too. I believe it is Red Star, though. Nice big flakes are what I prefer. Great on eggs and on toast.

I keep mine in an air-tight glass jar on the counter, so that I'm reminded to use it. If it was in the cupboard, I might forget  . The leftover that doesn't fit in the jar goes into the fridge (that's where it's kept at the hfs).

An opaque container is best so that the B vitamins are preserved.

KAL is an outstanding brand.

I don't like buying nutritional yeast from the bulk bins because they are transparent and a lot of the B vitamins could have been lost to exposure to light.  I'm a KAL woman all the way.

Mine is Gayelord Hauser brand...comes in a cardboard shaker.  It is the only kind I have ever used, so I have nothing to compare it to.  But I think it is good.  I keep it on the table so I remember to use it.  We teachers are supposed to get a tsp per day, so I am trying for that.

I guess you could keep it in the cupboard in a glass container, but the less light it gets the better.  And...I would think that everytime you open the cupboard, whether for NY or whatever, it would be exposed to light.  Over the years I have taken things out of plastic and stored them in glass jars.  Plastic tends to absorb and leech all kinds of things.

Thanks everyone.  I was glad to hear a confirmation for the KAL brand I bought.  I had never really used it--just bought a little in bulk but it sat up in the cupboard.  Once I bought the new book, I decided to buy some.  I put my bulk purchase in glass jars, but will have to store them in the refrigerator or dark cupboard.  The KAL comes in its own container so I won't have to worry.  I am trying both kinds.  The Red Star is the big flakes and tastes wonderful on a salad made with organic baby spinach, sliced crimini mushrooms, sliced tomato and a sprinkle of sea salt, Umeboshi plum vinegar and olive oil.

I think I will also check out the Frontier brand.

You can buy millet cakes just like rice cakes. You can also put on ground flaxseed to make it even more beneficial and on the top of it all put on walnuts, almonds or shelled pumpkin seeds. Yummilicious.

I haven't seen them yet - is there a particular brand?  Do you have to pour on the ghee and butter - or just sprinkle the nutritional yeast on top?

With the rice cakes, I recommend breaking them up, because then what you end up with is basically a popcorn substitute that is FANTASTIC!  You could also do the same with your puffed millet and you wouldn't need to break it up because they are already single "puffs", right?  Simply drizzle in some ghee (dark-toasted sesame oil is also vunderbar in this, for types who can have it!), sprinkle a generous amount of nutritional yeast flakes in, add sea salt to taste, and shake shake shake, shake shake shake, shake your booty, shake your booty!  Voila:  popcorn substitute that is at least as good as the real thing!

Nutritional yeast is one of my favorite, favorite, favorite items to ingest.  Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.  Yeah, babe.

I, actually, got the idea from one of Mikeo's blogs.  A friend of his did this..."The other morning she took some 100% toasted kamut/spelt bread, poured a little olive oil on top of it…when on to mix honey and tahini and spread that on top. She then took some flaxseed meal (ground flaxseed) and spread that on top and topped that off with some fresh walnuts. Now you might say overkill, but what you have here is an EFA (essential fatty acids) super snack, which explodes with flavor. If you’re an O suffering from arthritis and want something to help your joints, give this a try…(who needs Novacain?)"

I just tweaked some of the ingredients.   I use ghee and I just spread a little on it.  (Did I say a little   )  I sprinkle on the ground flaxseed and nutritional yeast and place a few nuts on it after.  It's almost like having a sandwich if you use two millet cakes.  A little messy (eat over your plate and have your napkin close), but so Yummilicious.

I can't remember the brand name of the millet cakes.  I have an empty bag that had Kamut cakes in it.  Not sure if they were from the same brand by 'Suzie's' or not.  You could google them to find out.   I got them at a health food store in the city.  Good luck.

Didn't we talk about Nutritional Yeast and Brewer's Yeast sometime last year.  I have Lewis Labs Brewer's Yeast and thought it to be great.  And it says do not refrigerate.  I thought when I googled nutritional yeast it said Brewer's Yeast, but not the type you bake with.

Hi, My Nutritional Healing book says Brewer's yeast also known as nutritional yeast.  It helps in sugar metabolism and enhanced the immune system.  It contains a significant amount of phosphorus so people suffering from osteoporosis should watch it.  But that's what this books said.  The book goes on to say if you do take the yeast add extra calcium as well.  Its probably best never to over do any supplement.  In other words "more" is not better.  I heard on the radio a person who was selling their pill and it contained B vitamins to help the adrenal glands function better and he said that brewer's yeast had the same B vitamins in it but his added the other necessary supplements to compliment the Bs.  Discussions about Adrenal function is not something that you hear often unless you are listening closely.  I'm not a doctor nor a nurse so it is very confusing and I'd rather not get anything out of kelter.

I've just noticed an empty brown glass jar which I will keep on the bench with yeast in it so that I don't forget to use it. Still using faux-vegemite as per our big discussion last year.

Here's a recipe for cheese-less cheesey sauce that I tweaked from one of the vegan sites. Last night we made compliant pancakes ( a little early but hey...) and spread this on them. Oh wow.

½ cup Nutritional yeast flakes
½ cup Flour (spelt, rye, rice)
2 teaspoon sea salt
2 cup Water
¼ cup Butter or Ghee
½ teaspoon garlic powder or ½ clove fresh crushed garlic
dried or fresh herbs to taste

• Mix all ingredients except butter/ghee in a saucepan; add water and cook over medium heat, whisking, until it thickens and bubbles.
• Cook 1 minute.
• Remove from heat and add butter/ghee.
• Makes enough for macaroni cheese for 2 people.


Note to self: I am me, and also an O-nonnie - I'm allowed not to fit the mould.

Never had to really use any starch in our Cheeeze Sauce...May have to use more Yeast though...EVOO works just as well. Just be sure to use the largest Flakes you can find for this to get the best results - Works good on Pizza tooo.
