The GenoType Diet book lists three categories of rice: White, Brown, and Basmati.  Does anyone know (e.g., from the food lists on the GTD web site) whether the lists mean *any* basmati rice, or just the usual white basmati rice, or what?

I'm thinking maybe brown basmati might be rated the same as any other brown rice.  Does anyone know for sure?

Basmati is a non-glutinous rice. Possible differences include amylose and amylopectin content, among other things.

I would think of basmati as a different food than other rice, irrespective of color.

LLoyd, could you extrapolate on that a bit? I've been wondering why basmati was listed as bennie, but rice, white, wild, and brown were out. (I presume the parboiled and dainty rice at my grocer are just plain white...)

And what about jasmine rice, and sushi rice?(mmmmm.... sushi rice) Neutral, or other forms of "white rice"?

Jasmine rice shares some of basmati's characteristics. Sushi rice would fall in the white rice category. Wild rice is another species.

Do you belong to the GTD site? That would be a better place to discuss specifics and get Dr D's personal input.

One way I like to look at rice is by viewing the glucose responses.  The Glycemic Index rating of various types of rice can be found here or here.

Note that Jasmine rice is quite high on the GI scale!


My SWAMI diet is a blend of BTD and GTD Explorer, but I'm not totally compliant.  Also I try to choose foods that have a Low Glycemic index.  DW and DD are A+, probably also Explorer.

You know, I don't have the answer, but I have decided to use brown basmati rice in recipes that call
for rice.  It tastes great and has more fiber.  Don't really care about the facts. Pretty bad, huh?  well
I'll see how it goes with brown basmati for now.

Yes, brown basmati is just white basmati that hasn't been de-browned -- it still has a layer of bran or whatever that is.

For Teachers, brown rice is a superfood, but white rice is a black-dot Avoid.  Basmati rice is also a black-dot Avoid.  So I'm wondering whether that's because it's white (?) or because it's basmati.  I don't think it's possible to reason this out with logic -- it presumably relies on lab tests, the same as on the BTD.

I would just switch to regular brown rice, but we have 25# of brown basmati on hand, because it's Hubby's all-time favorite.  If any of you GTD web site members see anything relevant, please pass it along!

Carol, I don't see anything wrong with using what you have on hand.

The glycemic index and glycemic load on various types of rice is all over the map, with many whites being as good or better than typical browns. High amylose types seem better overall in that regard as do browns, but selection of specific type/brand seems more important thatn general classification if GI or GL is the criteria.

Perhaps fiber is the issue, in which case any brown would do. What can brown do for you (sic)?

In any case I still make no claim as to whether you should use it or not, only that basmati probably belongs in a seperate classification than other rices. Clearly the rice categories could have been combined if there was nothing else to consider.

We also just bought a 25# bag of Brown basmati rice, so I'm wondering the same thing as a Teacher.  At first I figured it should be fine, since the avoid dots are white rices..I assumed that brown should be okay.  I just want to be compliant, I'm sure it's okay though.

Hi. Welcome. At worst it's a black dot, at best a beneficial. So enjoy the rice and reevluate later. You'll probably use it up in a month or two and can make other adjustments at the same time.

I'm new around here (although I have been lurking in the background for a while). I saw your post here regarding rice and as I had signed up for the free week over on the GTD I thought I would ask the question over there (as Lloyd had suggested) and see if Dr. D can give us the definitive answer. It's provoked some interesting discussion but no conclusive answers. Lloyd has been keeping you in the loop, he is answering this question on both sites, there's nothing extra to gleen as of yet from the GTD site on this topic.

Forgot to say, I am hoping for a clear answer on this at some point too.  My instinct would have been to group the brown basmati with brown, and the jasmine with basmati...but maybe the brown bas should go with white bas too.  I want, of course, in typical A Teacher fashion, to do everything just right.   I think I will hold off on the brown bas for a while, and see how it goes.

Monstar -- Thanks for letting us know what's happening over on the new web site!  Are the food lists on that site as nonspecific (regarding basmati rice) as the lists in the book?  Or do they describe each food, similar to what Typebase does?  Hopefully, as Lloyd said, Dr. D will pop into a forum on one site or the other.  (And if he don't know, then don't nobody know!!!)

I would love to just hold off on the brown basmati, but I'm afraid I'd have a very indignant husband on my hands!

Carol, the food lists on the GT site are exactly as they are in the book.  No typebase type thing yet, I think it is in the works but other projects are ahead of it if I remember correctly...so it will be a long while.

Rats!  And I was looking forward to my free trial membership on that site, mostly so I could get the complete lists.

Hmmm, come to think of it, the book says (on page 222, among other places), "A complete list of all the foods I've tested is available online (www.genotypediet.com)."  And Dr. D must have tested the Neutral foods, or he wouldn't know that they're Neutral, right?  Maybe that's another part of the site that hasn't been completed yet.

(Yup, definitely A's!)

As Gumby has already answered, the food lists online are the same as the book. Good to know, thanks Gumby, I'm still waiting on my book - any day now. After having been so spoiled with the typebase on this website with not only neutrals but also additional information regarding lectins, agglutination, good for fighting cancer etc, etc, you sort of feel as if you're missing something with not having a neutrals list on the GTD site. This is of course where all our pesky questions regarding rice etc come in, if it's not on the list it's supposed to be neutral, which would mean jasmine rice would be neutral for Teachers. BUT being A's we need more information than that, we can't quite trust that if it's not on either list it must be neutral, rather than untested or by implication grouped with other rice. That is to say does the basmati rice listing (black dot avoid for teachers) cover brown basmati and white basmati? And if Jasmine is Basmati-like does that go under the basmati rating also? I mostly eat white jasmine rice but am thinking of changing to brown rice (possibly cooked with Jasmine tea - ala Lola)for the initial deprogramming stage (or until we know more on the subject).
BTW, the GTD site has an option to email a friend the food list, recipies etc. If you know anyone well enough on the GTD to share your email address with offline then that could be an option. I've emailed some things to myself as my trial runs out tomorrow and I will probably hold off from joining officially until after I have at least read the book and followed the diet for a while.
