Is there another way to measure one's torso and legs? I really dislike using the chair method.

It's tricky with the uneven seat of the chair I have to know where to measure on the chair. Also, I dislike having extra steps to do if something can be done in fewer steps. So if there is a method (perhaps measuring from the tail bone when standing to determine torso?), great!

I guess you could squat at seat level and have someone measure from the bottom of your butt to the top of your head, and than measure from the bottom of your butt to the floor and subtract that number, that would mean you would need to not move at all and someone else would do the measuring.  That's all I could think of.

Also discovered an eyeball easy way to see if ring finger is shorter than index finger (by inserting ring finger of one hand in between index finger and finger next to it and if it doesn't touch bottom it is shorter, worked on both of mine, after I measured it accurately.

I didn't use the chair...I just sat on the floor and measured from the floor to the top of my head.

As mentioned in another thread, I used a commode with the lid down. That provided a secure, level base.

That's so smart, Lloyd!!!!  I'm going to measure myself again (this will be the third time for the fingers ) and I'll use the same kind of "chair."

Your alternate finger measuring technique worked perfectly for me.  I don't know what the margin of error is, but it's certainly an inventive idea.

Sitting on a toilet seat is a great idea.  All the straight-backed chairs in my house have a thick, padded seat and arm rests.  It was very hard to measure in those.

Thank you for all of these awesome alternatives! I didn't like the method in the book even when I first read it and hadn't tried it.

Sitting on the floor to do the measurement is what I'll likely do to check my measurements again.

I agree with all of you regarding the awkwardness of the chair method, if no suitable chairs are available.  Fortunately, we have a step-stool with a perfectly flat, level top, so I used that.

Seeing as how Dr. D has endorsed Lloyd's toilet-seat idea (on the "Which Genotype when one leg is longer" thread), and seeing also as how this thread has slid onto page two of the GenoType forum index, I am going to stickify it.

I could be an explorer yet.  With your method, my ring fingers are shorter!  Although it is very inexact, as it all depends sort of on how spread out you have your other fingers vis-a-vis where the "webbing" falls, etc.

(Don't worry, Equipro, you aren't hopelessly lost, this will all make sense to you soon *lol*.)

Well, that's it.  I have GOT to do my proper measuring (of torso, legs, fingers, the whole works) at home, ASAP.  Lots going on, on the homefront, but I simply must do this soon, or risk ending up in a padded cell!  I am going to go with the measuring methods outlined in the book and the videos.

Although your finger measuring method is fascinating...and mind blowing!

This worked on me, too.  But it occurs to me that it would not work if your hands are not symmetrical.

For example, suppose that your index finger is longer on one hand, and your ring finger is longer on the other hand.  This method would measure the two longer fingers against each other and/or the two shorter fingers against each other, leading you to believe that your index fingers are the same length as your ring fingers.  That could throw you into a whole other GenoType.

D2/D4 measurements are only occasionally the exact same from one hand to the other.

That's exactly what I was thinking.  My right index finger is shorter than my left - and I think the ring finger too.  Every time I look at them I get something different.

I think that's a good idea for those who are flexible enough to sit up straight when sitting on the floor with legs outstretched.  I am not very flexible, if I sat on the floor I would not be able to sit up straight and would slump which would effect my measurement.  I think I did well using the toilet seat idea.  

Another idea for those who have no chairs with flat, horizontal, unpadded seats:

Sit on the stairs.  This could be any wooden, metal, or concrete steps, just as long as the steps are flat and uncarpeted.  One advantage of this over a chair (or toilet!) is that the step probably extends out to the sides far enough that your friend needs to make only one measurement, from the top of the step to the bottom of the book.  (This is hard to do with a chair if your butt covers the entire seat!)

I had my fingers measured several times at the conference because someone believed they were measured wrong. I just did the alternate method and it was obvious that my index finger is longer. I may also be an Explorer. Thanks for the suggestion.

As far as finger measurements go, I found that if you look at your hand with your palm facing you, it is much clearer to see which is longer.   Somehow from the front it doesn't seem as evident which is longer.  
It is pretty clear I'm a Gatherer.  I wouldn't have pegged myself that right off the bat, but "it is what it is"!  I'm very optimistic about following the diet.
