Astragalus is good too. Ginseng (the Asian type) is good, but it can be too heating and stimulating for young males esp. Good for an occassional boost perhaps (like a 1 week use period). You know you have used it too long if you become aggressive and feel overheated easily. The American ginseng is cooler and better for longer term use, but this one caused me panic attacks (too much dampness in the body).
Licorice root is okay, but not good as a long term tonic in high amounts, i find it to cause early morning waking. Rhodiola is powerful, but i find it too heating and causing agitation in even moderate amounts to start, similar to Asian ginseng, but fantastic for short uses if needed (in my case at least). It also gives me acidic stomach pretty bad if using too much. But after a week or so, the best for balancing stress and helping restore sleep patterns, and the side effects dissipate when the body gets used to the herb again (stuff like vivid dreams, more colorful thoughts, etc). Start slow with it if you try rhodiola at a low amount.
My favorite adaptogens are ashwagandha and astragalus and rhodiola of the ones i have used over the past few years. Usually the best long term adaptogens are warming and nourishing to the body, but they all work a bit different. Some cases may require a more cooling adaptogen or paired with fast acting herbs to balance them and help them work better and get to where they need to go (think spices like ginger, mint, etc).
Not all herbs work for all people - if you had 2 A nonnies, the same herb may help one and make the other one feel "off". The human body instinctively knows what it needs, this is how the human race survived the past 10's of thousands of years! Try an herb with an empty stomach and then listen to what you body says to you. Regardless, natural herbs in their full spectrum form are very safe, even if you feel bad trying it, perhaps it is just not the best one for you or you used too much. Strong extracts and isolated compounds i do not mess with.
Dang this looks much longer on a phone - that was wordy. Sorry feeling a bit manic...prob those dang adaptogens!
With that said, astragalus seems to jive best with my system. Life demands a good bit at this time in the walk, astragalus I use to reinforce vitality. All I mentioned have been of some help to me however.
