Hi all, had a question on beverages. I use to drink a couple cups of coffee in the morning and then a couple glasses of tea during the day, but since on this program and swami, coffee and black tea have been nixed.

So, for the last 6 weeks, besides water, which I drink a pretty good amount of, I have switched to green tea. But to be honest with you, I'm getting bored with that. I bought a bag of Yerba Mate, and had a couple cups, but honestly, it tastes like grass clippings from my front yard. I really don't care for it.

Is there something that we can have that maybe tastes kind of like coffee but doesn't have whatever it is in coffee that I am not suppose to have??? I looked a little bit on Google, and read that chicory coffee is suppose to be a substitute. Just wondering what you all are drinking more of, especially since it's winter, a nice hot cup of something other than green tea all day would be great....Thanks....

I don't care for yerba as it is myself but I love this:
cup of yerba matte
natural suger to taste (for me half a spoon)
1/8 spoon of carob powder
two heaping spoons of raw cacao powder (the processed stuff just is not the same)
and a generouse splash of real cream

this is how I kicked my coffee habit because it is so much like a cup of coffee with about half the caffen
I also drink a lot of herbal teas (there are so many), kombucha and for those times when I miss the fizz I add a bit of juice to soda water.

I make a lot of "mocha mate": first I brew yerba mate, then add blackstrap molasses, cocoa powder, and ghee (I used to use almond or rice milk in place of the ghee.) Delicious! I've also made hot cocoa- basically the same thing, but starting with hot water instead of tea. Sometimes I make peppermint hot cocoa by adding cocoa powder and agave to a cup of peppermint tea.

You can also drink other herbal teas (making sure there are no "avoid" ingredients) to mix things up. And green tea can be flavored by adding a tablespoon or two of juice to the cup.  That's good hot or iced.

Roasted Dandelion Root is offered (here in the UK) as an alternative to coffee - instructions say to grind like coffee beans then use in percolator or filter machine.

I also buy the Dandelion Leaf tea as "Dents de Lion" (is the word heritage due to the shape of the leaves) appears from the BTD Encyclopedia to be a great all rounder. Especially the liver.

We don't find the fresh leaves for sale in shops in the UK, but I am planning to clear an area to cultivate them in my woods (just got to clear the area of bracken and bramble first)

Hope this helps

Have you tried Teeccino? You need about half as much as you use of coffee for a given amount of water.  To me it tastes very much like coffee.  I use the Maya Dark French Roast. A lot of people prefer the flavored varieties.

No caffeine.  It dose contain barley, BUT there is a statement on their bags that says their product has been tested and after being brewed the test shows no measurable gluten.

Well in my O BTD rules, GTD Rules and now my Swami Rules - Barley is a no no ... so not sure if Assundevil could have it or not..

Not sure if it's the gluten in the Barley or why we can't have it....

I like the O tea, and have ordered one from Rose Mt. It's called "Herbal Coffee" :
roasted dandelion root, roasted chicory root, roasted carob and maca powder.

Looks like those using dandelion are on the right track. For me all listed here is ben or neutral.

I also just like roasted chicory root made in a standard drip coffee pot.

I haven't tried Teeccino, in fact never heard of it. I did some looking this morning on the internet about it though. They do say, that the brewing process is suppose to remove any gluten remaining in the barley. At least, in their testing, which was accurate to less than 5ppm.

I also see they carry a completely gluten free, barley, caffeine free version made with dandelion root. Right now I'm trying to see if this Yerba Mate tea with almond milk, and a little unsweetened cocoa will fool my taste buds into thinking I'm downing an awesome cup of coffee, we'll see.

I will check out my local Sprouts store, supposedly they are suppose to carry that Teeccino....

And yes, barley is thrown out the window on my swami report, I see chicory is a neutral though.

Dr D's Sip Right tea is lovely I have a cup a day as a treat.

I also have a cup of Mr Itaru's tea every Day,

I then have a cup of nettle tea which i like.

the other thing o do with my regular green tea is ensure it is half decent, the brand i use if clipper.

you can of course add things to your green tea like a squeeze of lemon, lime.

I also dehydrate my own fruit and add them to green tea when I'm feeling particularly daring little dried pineapple. fins what yo like, it takes time and also your taste buds will adapt.

A new coffee press blend that I created and love:

Loose Leaf Plain Yerba - 1/2 Tbl
Roasted Yerba - 1/2 Tbl
2 Bags Chocolate Yerba mate
2 Bags Guayusa Tea

Let steep for 10 min.

Add almond milk and compliant sweetener.

Delicious with a wonderful pick me up!

I tried hot water and coco powder with a bit -o- 1/2n1/2 for a while. The bitterness took some getting used to and I did try to sweeten it but that was too tempting. "Chaga" made from yellow birch tree fungus is also interesting to try if you can get it. I put the stuff I have through an espresso pot and that works really well. I'm thinking of trying to switch to just some kind of meat broth altogether to get the warm morning beverage effect through the winter.

I like roasted chicory. Just boil 1 teaspoon in mug of water for a few minutes.
