Hi all you A's!! Hoping you would tell me what symptoms you (or others you know) had/have when consuming nightshades, especially tomatoes. Hubby has gone on the V8 kick again and is feeling pretty poorly. I mentioned it could be the V8, he just . Thanks ahead of time for the feedback. |

Heart burn from tomatoes. Tomatoes are the worth. But I never eat eggplant because its gross. Bell peppers I'm fine with, hot peppers are fun but don't feel good eating. |

Tomatoes hurt my joints & give me mouth ulcers. I have never eaten eggplant so not sure what it would do. I am highly allergic to potatoes with swelling then choking & lingering heartburn from them so of course that is a "never go there again" for me. I detest chillies as I like to taste my food not feel it burning me. Bell peppers & paprika I enjoy on occasion without noticing any physical reaction. |

A nurse I met said arthritis disappears with nightshades and reappears with them. She travels around the country to RV parks and teaches seniors about BTD. She sees this across the board. |

V8 varieties often include citric acid and/or vinegar.
Neither of which takes much to create problems for this A.
I am a nonsecretor and can get away with some tomato consumption.
I have not used the V8 Splash products, but they often have undesirable sweeteners.

Joint problems is the main reason why my SWAMI doesn't let me have nightshades.
Tomato products are on the acidic side of the PH balance scale, so I suspect heartburn and digestive problems could result from overconsumption of tomato products, though I can't say I've personally noticed it. |

Tomatoes make me tired. Around one hour after eating tomatoes, I get very sleepy for the rest of the day. I'm very run down/tired the next few days. And possibly my muscles ache. I haven't had them for a while...
I haven't tried eggplant all by itself - I eat it from time to time when I eat out and usually feel lousy. But I don't know if it's only the eggplant causing it or the whole meal. It's hard to say. |

I don't eat or like tomatoes and never did...Bell peppers are beneficials..and I love them and eat them often without problems... Eggplant, I've eaten with no problems...and potatoes don't bother me either. Just that both are toxins so I don't consume them. Nightshades are alkaloids...I guess some people have issues with that. http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=george&dbid=62My husband is a Warrior nonnie and does great on tomatoes. Same with eggplant. |

My husband eats jalapenos with everything. His arthritis is getting worse. Connection? Probably. He is an A+. Tomatoes usually make my mouth break out because of the acid. |

I have barely eaten potatoes or eggplants in 10 years, and my beginnings of arthritis at that time has not developed or been a problem even though xrays of parts of my body indicate that I have, or have had some arthritis. But I don't mind if I can't feel it! Occasionally I sneak some tomato, but I never buy it for myself, only when it comes accidentally in food that others have made for me. Basically I follow the no nightshade rule, and it seems to be working. |

If you search for messages from a user named Ribbit and the term nightshade, you may find a few valuable posts. |
| My SWAMI diet is a blend of BTD and GTD Explorer, but I'm not totally compliant. Also I try to choose foods that have a Low Glycemic index. DW and DD are A+, probably also Explorer. |

AVOID: Contains lectin or other agglutinin. Metabolic inhibitor. Flocculates serum or precipitates serum proteins.
Lets take this one bit at a time... Contains lectin or other agglutinin: - An agglutinin is a substance that causes particles to coagulate to form a thickened mass. So this means that this food contains an agent that will cause cells with blood type A markers to clump together. Metabolic inhibitor: - me·tab·o·lism (m-tb-lzm)n.1. The chemical processes occurring within a living cell or organism that are necessary for the maintenance of life. In metabolism some substances are broken down to yield energy for vital processes while other substances, necessary for life, are synthesized. inhibitor - a substance that retards or stops an activity. Combining these two definitions, This is a substance which retards or stops the normal chemical processes within cells that are necessary for the life of the cell. Flocculates serum or precipitates serum proteins. This means that reather than maintaining normal suspension, the solids either mass together to look like clouds or settle out of the liquid portion of the blood when exposed to the substance in question. |

Tomatoes make my eyes puffy and clogs up my sinuses. I hated tomatoes as a child and my mother ( an O) made me eat them. Unfortunately I learned to like them in the form of Mariana sauce but I don't eat them anymore. |

Hi Pat ...tomatoes I can tolerate.mostly but V8 gave me indigestion. White potatoes make my joints hurt. No reaction from eggplant, and bell peppers. Black pepper gives me indigestion and chili peppers bother my stomach and make my lips itch.. |

No problem with tomatoes or most peppers. Chili peppers and cayenne will get rid of my nausea and heartburn fairly quick. Potatoes and cabbage both cause inflammation in my joints. I don't really like eggplant.
Perhaps it is the salt in the V8 products causing him issues. |

Tomatoes give me a very unpleasant itching sensation in my mouth; once I deleted them from my food list I never missed them. Feel much, much better without. Eggplant gives me no trouble at all; I really like it grilled with a little olive oil, but sadly it's an avoid for me. Bell peppers give me the exact same problems as tomatoes, and potatoes taste great to me, but make me tired and bloated. So, I'm a no-nightshade gal now |

If I eat too many tomatoes, I get really bad acid reflux. As for the others like red peppers - still not sure as I generally try to avoid them since I'm unsure about them as of now. |

I read somewhere that those sensitive to gluten have a high incidence of sensitivity to other proteins including milk, eggs, soy, grains, meats, nuts and nightshades (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant). They think it is tied to the same gene homozygotes HLA-DQ2 or HLA-DQ8 and may manifest as celiac disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritus, ect. and can include sensitivity to nightshades. I'm an O with celiac disease and my mother had rheumatoid arthritus. If I eat nightshades, especially potatoes, within a couple of days I'm having joint pain. Pork also gives me the same joint problems but I have no idea what's going on there genetically. disclaimer *no scientist here, just something I read somewhere ON THE INTERNET!* |

Kitari - Interesting. I am allergic to gluten as well as eggs, soy, and grains. I am prediabetic. I didn't know about the homozygotes HLA-DQ2- AND HLA-DQ8 genes. That could explain somethings. |

BT A nonnies might do okay with tomatoes but not recommended for secretors...as seen on posts above. Like some others on this thread, tomatoes make me ache(joints) for a day or two...I only eat them if I am tempted by salsa or marinara sauce....not too often as I know what they do to me. I changed to salsa verde...made with tomatillos, diamond on my swami! I use pesto sauce on my rice or quinoa pasta instead of marinara. Eggplant, white potatoes are avoids and make me feel blah/ no energy. Sweet potatoes and yams are avoids but I do fine with them. Red peppers are black dot and I do fine with them. |
