A few times, I have had a very strong upper respiratory/post-nasal drip problem immediately after eating with wheat in it. It was so strong and acute, that I always associated it with the wheat. But this has only happened 2 or 3 times in my life, but I regularly eat things with wheat, almost daily.

So am I crazy?

I know this board is full of people who have refined their diets and are acutely tuned into the reactions their bodies have to certain foods, and my body is not at all like that. Have any of you experienced this sort of reaction to eating wheat?

Okay, I'll let you know as soon as I do. But it might be a while. I'm trying an experiment on myself. Since I don't have any pressing health needs right now and I'm coming into this fresh, I'm going to go about it in reverse and determine my blood type based on avoid foods. When I eat something that makes me feel bad, I look it up on Dr D'Adamo's site and see who it's beneficial for.

So, um, so far I know I'm NOT type A, because coffee makes me feel funny in the tummy.

So, in the meantime, has anyone, regardless of blood type, felt this type of effect from wheat?

You can't really guess at your blood type based on your reaction to food.  Some A's will tell you that coffee makes them feel funny-- and that meat makes them feel good.   Please get yourself tested it will really make things much easier for you.




Go donate blood you will be typed for free.

I did meet the strangest women who thought that she could change her blood type by thinking it, she refused to be typed and preferred to make it up as she went along.

I can understand how you're thinking here and your approach may be useful to train yourself to pay attention to your body in a more immediate way.  The problem with using this technique to guess your blood type is that not all foods are avoids because they make us feel bad.  Sometimes it's because they set us up for a slow slide into disease, which may be without obvious symptoms for a long time.  There are actually many reasons and many levels for how Dr. D classified foods.

I understand that not all avoids will have a noticeably bad effect on us. But I think there will be enough that I can make an educated guess, and it will be interesting to find out if I was right when I DO test myself.

Anyway, enough about me. I see that wheat can be an avoid for all types if they are not a Secretor, but for different reasons.

So, has anyone noticed a connection between wheat and their sinus?

(It's okay if the answer's no. I'm just curious.)

I never noticed it, although I have noticed it with dairy. I went 100% dairy free for a month, except I still included butter. Then I had some cream in coffee at my aunt's house. Within half an hour, I was congested, and it took several weeks until my nose cleared up again. That was long before I'd discovered BTD (which is why I'd been drinking coffee.)

Wheat makes me tired, achy, and sore. Both wheat and dairy affect my moods- but that usually takes a day or so to show up.

Then there are avoids that I've noticed no immediate reactions to at all, and that I feel good after eating: coconut milk (avoid for all types) peanut butter (great for As and ABs, avoid for Os and Bs). I noticed how my blood sugar is unstable after too much  fruit, but I never noticed any specific problems from oranges or apples (both avoids for O non-secretors) as compared to how I feel after eating too many blueberries (beneficial) or pears (neutral.) My hormones are out of whack if I eat too much soy in a month, but I generally feel good after having a meal full of soy protein, since high protein meals make me feel good.

There certainly is value in seeing how  foods react for you personally. By being in tune with your body you'll be far ahead of most of the people in the world today who live on junk food. Listening to your body is also great for fine-tuning the diets once you've selected which of Dr D's diets to follow. Even the computer-generated personalized SWAMI sometimes needs to be tweaked.

However, it will be hard for you to fully benefit from Dr D's work if you don't find out your blood type. He's taken out a lot of the guesswork.

I'll just ditto what everyone else said.  I did used to feel funny when I ate peanut butter and sometimes apples.  I've had problems with cow dairy since I was a kid but back in those days we had to have 3 8 ounce glasses of milk a day.  I couldn't stand the taste and had to cover it up with chocolate syrup.  I used to get terrible stomach aches and gas but no one ever connected it to the milk.  When I was pregnant with my boys the things that bothered me the most were what I much later found out were avoids - again the milk and orange juice.
Get yourself tested and start out on the right path.  You are worth it!

Prior to BTD I ate organic wheat bread almost daily. I have had seasonal sinus problems most of my life and knew very early on that cow dairy was my main culprit.
I noticed a real lack of energy before going to BTD, so when I started it, and had to change my wheat eating habits....my "stuffy" nose cleared somewhat and I felt better in general. When I gradually began the GTD I noticed an even bigger improvement, had my IgE blood allergy test done, and discovered I was highly sensitive to wheat and cow dairy.
I have had my swami for about 2 years and know it is the best way of eating for my body. I have had to tweak a little, ex; I cannot enjoy my many neutral cheese choices due to my sinuses and if I eat even some of the allowed "wheat" I will get a stomach ache. The more superfoods I eat, the better I feel!

Wheat seems to cause mucus problems in myself and my entire family, with the exception of 1 type B Nomad child. It doesn't appear to be immediate, but when we were eating wheat regularly he would occasionally pick up viruses and get stuffed up.

I second the theory on dairy and mucus too. Even though my entire family as almost completely gluten free, I see that prolonged periods of dairy consumption get many of us mucousy.

Type unknown I hope you will read this. I was like you when I started. I tried two at home eldoncard blood kits and couldn't tell what I was. I knew my parents blood types and guessed I was the same as my dad. I was wrong and ate according to the A diet. I was eating rice, beans, turkey, chicken, cereal, tofu, soy milk, cheese, bread, and some fruits and veggies. I felt so deprived on that diet and didn't feel well. I just thought it wasn't working fast. I ended up passing out one night which I had never ever done and I believe it was that diet. I went to the dr and got him to test me. So you can see guessing can be dangerous. I was eating completely wrong foods for my type and it hurt me. I feel much better now on this diet. Please find out your type.

I had horrible mucus problems before changing my diet.  Seasonal hayfever almost disappeared after I removed gluten/dairy from my diet.  I have read both can cause the excess mucus.

Sorry for the long delay. Thank you all for your input about gluten--I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who has had a reaction sort of like this to wheat. It is just a question that had been on my mind bc I had never heard a correlation between sinus trouble and wheat (but that could have been result of poor research).

I admit, being on the boards has changed my views on the blood type diet. I used to be skeptical and critical of the diet. But now I can see some of the main priniciples of the diets apply to me. I still have trouble with some of the details.

I have long noticed that I require a lot of protein to feel satisfied, whereas my Type A husband seems to be satisfied with what seems to me to be bird seed. I always thought it was because living as a vegetarian, I knew I needed to focus on supplementing my protein bc I wasn't getting it from normal sources.

But I found out this last week I am type O, so that makes sense.

So, Rachel D, I think I can relate to how you must have felt living a Type A diet. I'd imagine I would starve to death.

I haven't decided. I'm now trying to include meat or some sort of protein in every meal in small portions, and I'm going to try to exercise like a Type O.

I'm going to avoid wheat and sugar, since I don't know my secretor status.

Some of my avoid foods I still have trouble grappling with. I love trying different cuisines, so avoiding cabbage, avocado, and garbanzo is difficult for me. Since I know that avoiding foods that are highly regarded as healthy choices by the rest of the nutrition community is what sets the BTD apart from the others, I can't say that I'm committed yet.

Maybe my problem is that aside from wheat, soy, sugar, and coffee, nothing really makes me feel bad--many of my avoids make me feel better.

I'm on this message board because I was a critic of this diet. Many of my family members are on the diet, so I wanted to understand it better. Trust me, as skeptical as I am now, this is NOTHING compared to how I was a few weeks ago.

I'm going to continue to experiment with the type O avoid foods since my health has not been bothering me in any particular way. Thank you again for the offer to help, and I am sure I will be taking you up on the offer.

If you've never had a major trauma or health problem, it is possible that your body has been able to maintain health in spite of the avoid intake...  

Remember also, that some Type Os feel really good on a vegetarian diet for a couple of years before they start seeing negative effects...  Once damaged, the body needs higher compliance to be able to repair and heal.

I ate beef and enjoyed it to the fullest until I was around 57 years old and began to figure out that it was giving me some serious problems. At about the same time I discovered the BTD, and when I read what Dr. D. said about beef and A-types, it made all the sense in the world to me. It still amazes me after all these years the way Dr. D. has helped so many who, like me, were completely in the dark for so many years about what was wrong with them.

I had figured it out myself about beef, but the abominable corn was another matter. It had made my stomach ache since I was a child, and I'm not sure I would have ever figured that one out on my own. How does a person even know what a normal stomach feels like if it has been hurting for over fifty-five years???? The problem was, when I ate corn the pain didn't start immediately, that I was aware of, but when I would eat something else a few hours later the pain would be severe so I would think it was THAT food instead of the corn!! I am so thankful to be wise now to the horrors of corn and how to avoid it at all costs!

I was a vegetarian for over 10 years. I don't know that the vegetarian diet was hard on my body, but i wonder if the high soy intake contributed to my fibroadenoma.

There are many Type O vegetarians, aren't there? They get their protein from other sources, as I understand it. I know it must be a challenge.

Now, I do have random joint pain at least a few times in a week. I'm very interested to know if the blood type diet will help that. I have heard nightshades can cause that, but many nightshades are neutrals for type O. Excellent news for my tongue, but is it bad news for my joints? Just one of the many questions I hope I'll be able to answer as I learn how to listen to my body.

Cabbage and garbanzos are neutral for O secretors, and avocados are beneficial for O non-secretors. There's no way you'll need to give up all 3 of those foods, and, quite frankly, none of them are nearly as toxic for an O than wheat or milk is. You could implement this diet 80% and never give up any of those 3 foods, and you'll likely see an improvement in your health and energy levels. I myself found a huge improvement just in cutting out wheat, long before I'd even heard of the BTD.

This way of eating doesn't have to be "all or nothing." You can incorporate the elements that make intuitive sense to you and ignore the ones that you struggle with.

If you want to give it a more serious effort, take a look at the "Arthritis: fight it with the blood type diet" book.  That will have specific food changes to help with joint pain. Tomatoes, for example, are an "avoid" for Os with arthritis even though they're neutral for O secretors and O nonnies without arthritis. (I haven't memorized any other differences in the food lists.)

I am an A-Type, and a vegetarian diet would kill me. I don't need a tremendous amount of other types of protein, but I HAVE to have it! Actually, I don't eat as much of it as my SWAMI allows, but my body knows exactly when it has had enough!

Wow that's interesting. That sounds like me except for the heart beat. Does this happen every time? Like I said before, this only happened to me a few times, like right after taking a bite of something. I guess now after I heard similar experiences from you and a few others on this thread, the weirdest part is that it doesnt happen 100% of the time. Thank you for adding your experience!

Lol! That's funny. When I was doing my little "experiment" and reading about the different types, personality-wise I was POSITIVE I would be a type B or A. My personality is definitely not type O!

I am one of those that Ruthie described. I am about 80% compliant to my swami most of the time...sometimes 90%...but the major issues with me, as with many O's and A's, are wheat/gluten and dairy. Both of these will cause not only copious amounts of phlegm/mucous and nasal/sinus congestion but also achey joints. I avoid these as much as possible!
My "cheats"(avoids or black dots on my swami) such as, black tea, sweet potatoes, red peppers, grapes,cherries, peaches, pears, sometimes chocolate or brown sugar, do not affect me in any way I am aware of....but because they are black dots/avoids, I try not to indulge often.
I gave up all red meat in 1995. I never really liked the taste of beef anyway and I read something about how it affects people with slow digestion.. Little did I know back then that meat had been one of my problems since childhood! Within 2 weeks of no red meat (I do eat fish and turkey and eggs) my system was like new!
As Dr. D's research says; O's need red meat to enhance their metabolism...it only slows/stops an A's proper digestion and can cause weight gain. We simply do not have the stomachs to digest and get it going so it acts like toxic sludge in our tracts. Now, I can eat lamb, but after so many years without meat, my intestines revolt!
When my vegetarian yoga teacher found out she was an O- and had already decided to try the BTD, she was worried. One week after starting to eat very small amounts of turkey and fish her skin cleared up and she had more energy. After a month she could eat bits of lamb and beef and said she just felt like a new person with a happy new attitude!
We are all individual and do need to listen to our own bodies. I wish you the best on your journey!

Lol! That's funny. When I was doing my little "experiment" and reading about the different types, personality-wise I was POSITIVE I would be a type B or A. My personality is definitely not type O!

my husband's A, he acts like an O. Crazy.


I have two sons, one is an O and the other is a B. Different as night and day.  IMO, B's and A's and AB's more emotional than O's.  O's really have control of their emotions...usually... once in awhile my O son cracks.
BTW, here's the link for the Blood typing kit.  This is how I found out my blood type. It's very accurate because I had the doctor type me to make sure.  I had thought I was a B.

Going by those "blood type personalities" I would have assumed that my younger two are both Os and my oldest is an A (never mind that I knew she can't be an A since I'm an O and her dad is a B.) In reality, my youngest is a B and my older two are both Os.

The 3 of us- Hannah, Jack, and I, have similar personalities, even though we don't share a blood type. Leah is very different from the rest of us- much slower to anger, and much, much slower to calm down after being upset. Yet she's one of 3 Os in the house.

These "blood type personalities" may have some validity, but they're not absolute. I certainly can't see the patterns in my own nuclear family.

My SWAMI diet is a blend of BTD and GTD Explorer, but I'm not totally compliant.  Also I try to choose foods that have a Low Glycemic index.  DW and DD are A+, probably also Explorer.

I quit being a vegetarian in the interests of Kung Pao maybe 15 years ago.

Even now, when I have coffee, I feel, hm.... I feel like my whole body is racing while my brain feels exhausted. It definitely gets worse if I drink coffee on an empty or refined-carb-filled stomach. I guess I should just say it feels like a bigger, faster blood sugar crash than I ever would feel on, say, candy.

Though I do not drink my coffee black. I did try that once, and I believe I felt the same way then too.

I feel great on all sorts of teas. Once I drank too much green tea, and I felt that super energized, talking-too-fast mode that I've always heard people link to their morning java.

I dont remember how I felt day to day as a vegetarian. I dont remember feeling bad or sick all of those years. I ate so many bean/grain combos and tofu and nuts that I'm relatively sure my body got used to having a steady stream of protein. In fact, I think I neglected the other necessary nutrients back then because protein was so high on my priority.

Wheat caused my type O daughter pretty severe adult acne. Since she's gone gluten free, where before she around 30 blemishes on her face, she now  is down to about 8, and those are fading! if she gets accidentally 'glutened', she gets puffy and breaks out!

She tried all types of topicals, antibiotics etc. The dermatologist was pushing her toward Accutane, but my daughter refused. She was concerned about taking a drug so strong that a pregnancy test was mandated before treatment! All the doctors said what you eat doesn't cause acne! Humph! BS!

She suffers from morning stuffiness, and sneezes a lot. That hasn't been helped yet by being gluten free, but she's hopeful that in time she will sneeze less.

What is your daughter's diet like besides being gluten-free? Many gluten-free products contain corn and/or potato, both of which are avoids for Os.

Ruthie, since committing to going GF, her diet has really improved. Her biggest vice is chocolate. Otherwise, she's been trying to concentrate on her bennys. She bought the Collinsonia , and she may sneeze a bit less , but still....of course 4 dogs and 2 cats may be  contributing to  the sneezing but no way are they going any where. The joy they bring is greater than the discomfort of sneezing!

She did buy some GF bread for lunch at work, but rarely eats it. She did enjoy the flax bread that I made.

We were truly amazed by the dramatic change in her complexion since going GF! Oh, and she no longer gets hives from the cold like she used to when eating gluten!

I agree about the dogs...only if life threatening. The unconditional goodness  and health benefits from our dogs are amazing!
A few of my friends told me that when I got my skin allergy test to "be prepared to get rid of my dogs as they are surely the cause of my sinus issues."
I had 2 separate, very painful skin prick allergy tests all over my back and upper arms. Results; not even one single allergy!! The doctor said it is unusual to not have even one red area/bump/sign of an allergy.
I will let you imagine how I told my friends the news!!!!!!

Interesting note; just read an article in the Sunday paper about "children raised with pets have less asthma than those who don't have any."

Ha ! Cajun , no allergy to dogs! So there!   non-animal people just don't get how much us 'animal people' NEED our critters!

I agree with the Sunday article you just read. I also think kids raised around animals have more empathy for living creatures, human and animal alike!

Can you give your age? It may help us understand how long you were doing certain things. If you are 30, you may have different needs than if you are 60.
Many of us started BTD later in life. I first heard about it near my 50th birthday & slowly got into it. Others learned of it in their teens. That would make a big difference.

This is a great forum & the folks here are very helpful. Welcome!!!!
