Distilled liquor is on the avoid list (which I would expects on any nutrition plan) I enjoy a small glass of scotch at night. Can some one explain why its on the type o avoid list? |

Wine is allowed.. for some.. how old are you? .. a small nip.. never more? are you compliant with other foods you eat? if yes.. I would have that nip .. but not more.. we are allowed up to 20% cheating.. if we are willing to pay the price of not feeling optimal.. when I cheat more than 5% I get bad results.. life is easier - feeling better- when doing RIGHT for YOUR type.
Have you ever tried doing without? or switch to wine? what did you see as a difference?
Can you cut down rather than out, choose a smaller and smaller glass?

Quoted from Typebase - Liquor, Distilled
TYPE O:Secretor: AVOID: Contains component which can modify known disease susceptibility.
Non Secretor: AVOID: Contains component which can modify known disease susceptibility.
This means that some component that causes other diseases to manifest themselves more regularly... It is not stated what the component is or what disease is "promoted". Much alcohol is either corn or potato based and both are bad for most Type O individuals. |

On my personalized SWAMI, "liquor, distilled" is a black dot- meaning it's something I can enjoy in moderation, very infrequently. It's not something I'd ever have daily (that's what red wine, a beneficial, is for) but it's not going to harm me if I have a shot of strong liquor once a month or so. (I actually have it less often than that.)
Remember that you're in charge of your own health. If you want to follow most of the Type O plan, but keep having the one glass of Scotch each night, that's your decision to make. The one drink will not undo all the other healthy food changes you're making. |

I believe Scotch is made from barley which is a neutral for O. |

Isn't barley "barley wheat"? or is that just a name? I'm not sure. I've found that alcohol is high in sugar with isn't needed by most Os. I'm thinking there is something about thyroid and alcohol as well. Those would be the topics I'd do some research on. |

No. Both barley and wheat are grass grains - so closely related, but they are distinct entities. Barley is Genus Hordeum vs. Wheat, Spelt, etc. are Genus Triticum. |

Tequila is generally made from agave, but is still a distilled liquor for the purpose of the rating. We are all able to determine how closely we adhere to the ratings... |

Wine is definitely a better alternative - but my friends always make fun of me when I drink wine. ; ) A little tequila can't hurt... = ) |

I know... No matter what you do that is "different" from the "norm", someone will make fun or ask questions... So what! Stick to your position and it gets easier each time you do... I had a boss that kept pushing after I said I didn't care for more - finally asked his son how to say "No." to him... He told me and it was easy after that... I don't have any problem now setting a limit and sticking to it. For me, that means I don't eat or drink avoids, if I can possibly avoid it. Since it is never a "need" to drink distilled liquor, it will never be a problem. I enjoy beer and red wine, which are both Beneficials for me, that I have no need to drink the avoid. |

I know - I was just saying that in jest. I don't really care what they say. I'm European after all - so I like my wine. Your words are very true though... |

Agave is an avoid for me. Is it an avoid for all O's? |

Per BTD, it is Neutral for all... I guess you are just one of the "lucky" ones... http://www.dadamo.com/typebase4/depictor5.pl?600
Oops! I misspoke. Aloe is an avoid for me, not agave. Agave SYRUP is a beneficial but the plant is not listed. |

Does this mean that grappa, made from red grape skins, and brandy made from wine is OK? |

I'm pretty sure that tequila is fermented from agave syrup, not the whole plant.
You're supposed to use the rating for "distilled alcohol" for any distilled alcohol, regardless of what it's fermented from. Dr D didn't spend a lot of his time evaluating different alcoholic beverages.
However, it's common sense that something fermented from a compliant source should be better for you than something fermented from a non-compliant source. I don't drink hard liquor often (it's a black dot) but when I do, I try to select liquors fermented from compliant sources. Tequila or brandy would probably be the best choices for me.
The reality is, though, that I only drink twice a year, at a large gathering, and I'm never the one actually buying the alcohol. So I have one shot of whatever's available (often a sweet dessert liquor that surely has "avoid" sugar in it) and mix it with seltzer and I don't worry too much about the ingredients.

No. If it is a distilled liquor, no matter the source, it falls into that category... |

I'm sure a little scotch would not hurt, if you eat right and exercise right for your type. That is just my personal opinion though. There are worse toxins out there i would think. Alcohol of all types is a toxin for my type, but i still enjoy a few glasses of wine or a few beers though on special occassions, like 5 o'clock and weekends! |

We've all had the flu for a week. I'm so congested I can hardly sleep and I'm doing everything herbal I know to do. My chiropractor suggested a shot of whiskey with honey. I don't want to do that, but I thought maybe rum would be a better option. Any amount of wine would have so much sugar in it it would make it counter-productive, right? |

Ribbit, In this case, the alcohol / honey combination is to make you drowsy so you can sleep easier... The alcohol content of whiskey is higher than wine, so less of it would be necessary, and probably tastes better with honey added... |

At this point, I just want to sleep. And I want to be able to exhale without coughing. I don't have anything "hard" in the house. I do have a bottle of wine, but I don't want to counteract all the immune-boosting stuff I'm taking by drinking a glass or two. Or whatever it takes. |
