Hello everyone - happy birthday to Lola and anyone else who is another year older and wiser! I now know that Tassal (who make tinned salmon, and fresh/smoked salmon too I think) feed soy to the salmon. Does anyone know if this soy ends up in flesh of the fish and therefore our system? Tassal said the soy does not affect the omega 6 fatty acids (pro imflammatory). They also use canola oil in some of their tinned salmon. So some people need to be aware of this and read labels. I don't know if all this matters, but for Blood Type O' and 'hunter' genotype, soy is not recommended. I am concerned about farmed fish also for the possible antibiotics used in these fisheries. Perhaps I am becoming paranoid, but I did read 'Eating Animals' and 'The Face On Your Plate'. What seafood / fish are other type O's and 'hunter's eating?? sardines? cod? mackeral? Also, what sweeteners are people using, I now hear that agave nectar/syrup is high in fructose and many people these days are not able to metabolise fructose, with damage to intestines and a strain on the liver, and unpleasant symptoms due to fermentation in the intestines. I think I may use maple syrup and in small quantities. or perhaps mash up some dates (medium fructose level I think). I do love dates and are a whole food source of sweetness! I prefer to avoid honey, sugar. Not sure about rice syrup yet. Look forward to hearing your comments. Regards, Amanda

I don't buy farmed salmon, period. If I can't find the wild kind, I won't buy salmon at all. Nor do I buy any canned foods with "avoid" ingredients. When I buy salmon, it's the wild-caught in a can, with nothing added but salt. I do buy yellowfin tuna and sardines packed in olive oil and salt. I only buy extra-virgin olive oil for use in my kitchen, but I don't worry about the purity of the olive oil in canned fish- I need to set limits somewhere!
Nor do I worry about the "one size fits all" research about agave. Dr D recommends 1 or 2 teaspoons of added sweeteners per day, tops. To the best of my understanding, the research showing the dangers of agave are using much higher quantities than that.
Some individuals have problems with fructose metabolism and can't handle agave; but these same people also can't handle honey or fruit.
As an O nonnie, I'm not supposed to have sugar, honey, maple syrup, or stevia. That basically leaves me with agave and molasses as sweeteners, and agave as the only "mild" sweetener. I don't use a lot of sweeteners total, but I always keep agave in the house.

Thankyou all for your replies, appreciate it. I don't think wild caught salmon is available here, even wild atlantic salmon is from sustaninable fisheries I think, ie farmed salmon. thankyou, ruthiegirl for your input re sweeteners, I think I am one of those who is carb/startch intolerant, so wish me luck as I do the two week test, and increase my intake of protein and fats. I had basmati rice last night and feel so unwell this morning (with terrible headacher, pain in shoulder muscles and terrible mood), I don't think the butternut pumpkin or broccoli were responsible. I also had dark chocolate, so think the starches/sugar had an effect. Then I must stick more to proper guidelines and paleo diet, with low sugar fruits. I am making slow progress, I really did not know how addictive sweeteners/carbs truly are!! I think I am a nonnie too. I had omelette this morning with sardines, a little parmason cheese. tonight will have some fish and probably chard(Aussie spinach/silverbeat). Wish me luck as I get my diet/eating back into some discipline and routine. I know I can do it, I just get weak from time to time, stres response I think. thanks for your support. Amanda
I eat a lot of wild cod which is readily available. Wild fresh salmon in season, but the season is only a few months. I also do not buy farmed. Lots of canned sardines, Wild Planet brand, and also Wild Planet brand wild salmon for salads.
Agave as a sweetener on the occasions I bake. I sometimes use compliant fruit spread with no added sugar for something sweet.

You may want to think about what Australian fish are equivalent to fish listed in the books rather than where to buy non native fish. Some prior research on this topic is summarized here:

Hello Lola and everyone - yes, you may be right, could be bacterial overgrowth! I find I can't eat too much animal protein, as macrobiotic people know, it can make some people crave yin foods to balance the yang nature of meat, etc. That is why I craved tropical fruits and chocolate recently, puts me on an emotional rollercoaster and physically, not feeling that great. freshly squeezed lemon juice and filtered water first thing in the morning helps.
I also find that total avoidance of sweets things is easier than having a little, as I always want more.
We use frozen wild salmon it's the best we can get that is not farmed. generally we don't use canned anything. but we do have a back up of a few cans of sardines in olive oil which we use from time to time to keep them in date.
I now never buy any caned fruit or veg. if for example we are going to be bad and have a few tomatoes in a sauce for example I buy organic and then skin them and boil them for a min of 3 hours. I do this as it's done in Italy, and some say the risk of methanol in canned tomatoes is a real one. this is the same reason I no longer burn peat in out fire in fact I generally don't use an open fire any more unless it's outside. and I take Dr D's advice not to eat anything smoked, very seriously. I used to eat smoked salmon as a staple which is now a worry.
Kind Regards PC.

Hi, Ma'm, from Texas:
Especially as I am a Nonnie, I follow the SWAMI prepared for me and notice that the fattier fish that are not wild-caught are the ones that cause me a lot of trouble. Especially if they are canned. Now I did have to get rid of smoked fish 6 months into my SWAMI (it's doubly carcinogenic for me) but made the mistake of grabbing some farmed salmon tinned over in China.....BAD MOVE. Threw up that day. The fish tasted as if it had no nutrients in it and was probably polluted.
There was a day when I grabbed a tinned salmon farmed in the USA and ate it.....and could swear the fishery man had thrown the salmon a biscuit or some white bread from his lunchbox to eat.......after my dinner I kept tasting "white bread, buttered biscuit" over and over again. I'm allergic to that stuff, so I wound up throwing up later anyway. it was insane!
I would think that just as much as we like to feed ducks and geese, some people would think throwing crud to the fish would be good fun too.
