Hello everyone,

November 2012 –Consumer Report magazine- Test Arsenic in your food.

Rice! On page 27-365 Everyday Value Long Grain Brown(Whole Foods)
Inorganic arsenic(micrograms/serving) 7.4 to 8.4

Also, they say How to cut your arsenic risk, Change the way you cook rice
“You may be able to cut your exposure to inorganic arsenic in rice by rinsing raw rice thoroughly before cooking using a ratio of 6 cups water to 1 cup rice for cooking and draining the excess water afterward, That is a traditional method of cooking rice in Asia. The modern technique of cooking rice in water that is entirely absorbed by the grains has been promoted because it allows rice to retain more of its vitamins and other nutrients. But even though you may sacrifice some of rice’s nutritional value. Research has shown that rinsing and using more water removes about 30 percent of the rice’s inorganic arsenic content”

Well….in Asia style, they cooking like that because we don’t have rice cooker! Plus that time we plant our own rice. My friend told me, Thai TV they interview the old woman, she is 105 years old.
She say she eat fish often with a lot of steam vegetables and WHITE RICE! WOW!

The amounts are quite low, so a 44% increase in a low number is still a very small increase. Fact is, arsenic has been part of the human diet for all time, and low levels show more health benefits than liabilities. Governments are limited by what is called a 'linear no threshold model' when determining the health risk of a substance. In this case 'no amount is acceptable'. In reality most naturally occurring natural substances including most poisons, have a biphasic effect: low doses tend to stimulate native repair mechanisms while high doses do harm. Thus, unless you plan on eating a suitcase full of rice 5-6 times daily, you've got very little to worry about, and may in fact be better off with it.

Whammo, to Consumer Report, again!!! Loved the quote! I sure don't plan on eating a suitcase full of rice in a decade. Rice does not satisfy me, and I always feel cheated somehow when I do eat it. I have no idea why. I have gotten so that I enjoy the taste all right, though.

Personally I WOULD worry about babies eating lots of rice and ricecakes
At least that is what the danish Auth, has said since their body weight is much smaller.
Then again I think rice is waste of energy  I rather eat something like veggies, meat or butter

I think it depends on just how much rice they were eating and what percentage of their diet it made up. I eat mostly meats and veggies, and about 1-2 portions of rice per day. My son needs far more grains than I do, and also eats rice with dinner frequently, but then he'll have spelt bread with lunch and oatmeal for breakfast. It's not all rice, all the time.

When he was an infant, before I knew most of what I now know about nutrition, I gave him baby oatmeal instead of baby rice cereal because I was worried about rice causing constipation (and I only gave him cereal because I got it free from WIC and wanted to use it up- otherwise I would have fed him lots of veggies and skipped the grains until  he was eating table foods.) He was mostly on breastmilk then anyways so I don't think the specific choice of solids was overly important.

If you're filling up a baby with cereal and formula, followed by feeding your toddler mostly grains and milk with very few meats, veggies, and fruits, then there is a danger of over-doing the rice.

I wish you people who love rice cakes had all these I have in my cabinet! They drive me nuts! They are perfectly fine rice cakes - Lundberg's, or something like that - but after eating about two of them in a year or so, I simply can't face them for at least long enough for me to forget how much I don't like them! When I see people talking about having these things for breakfast day after day, I wonder how they tolerate them. Now, if I were hungry and had nothing else to eat, these rice cakes would go down in a wink, but there are so many other foods that are so much better to me. Flax bread is totally wonderful by comparison!!
