Hey there Bs.

Do you like beans?
How often do you eat them?
Which ones do you like and/or eat most?
Any special way you like to prepare them?

Though a protein source, I consider them primarily a starch and would rather eat other starches. And, since I get so much protein, happily, from meat/fish/cheese/nuts, I don't really "require" beans in that way.

Discuss from any angle you like.

The only beans I ever liked were peas, if they count... and edamame salted soybeans. I never liked any other type of beans ever since I was a child. I would eat Korean latkes which are made with a type of mung beans only because it is highly flavored and does not taste like beans. Mexican beans, if flavored enough, is good. Otherwise, YUCK!

My favorite is navy beans and I usually cook them with a little turkey and cumin and beer and cayenne ect. I also make split pea soup.

My son really enjoys kidney beans. I heat them up with some cooked rice (white or brown) and some soft cheese (chevre and/or cream cheese) so that the cheese becomes a sauce. It's an inexpensive, filling lunch that packs well in a thermos for school.

He also likes to dip carrots into hummus, but he didn't like my homemade white bean hummus and he's really not supposed to have chickpeas.

It's not that I don't like beans, because I do. I occasionally eat bean soups, for instance, and, yes, I like peas.

But I just don't find myself breakin' out the navies, great northerns, kidneys or limas.

We ate lima beans a great deal in my childhood, and I did and still do like them. But I could count on one hand how often I've had lima beans during the past decade.

gcg: Your favorite navy bean recipes would be welcome.

I eat lots of green peas and french green beans.
I grow lots of them myself both green, yellow and purple beans as well as both regula peas and mange tout peas.

I really like the big white butterbeans
"The term "butter bean" is widely utilized for a large, flat and yellow/white variety of lima bean (P. lunatus var. macrocarpus, or P. limensi" - is it the same as you call lima ?

I eat them as hummous and in lebanese dishes.

I don´t use kidney beans that much- they are ok but a bit too rustic for me.
I grow some pretty borlotti beans and eat them in winter time.

I guess I eat some kind of beans 1-2 a week- more often when I am broke.
Good olie oil, or stock at lots of herbs is the key for me

I guess you can se I am a former vegetarian

That is something where I truly don't use a recipe SanJ. My original came from Moros y Christos or a black bean and rice soup with cumin and onions and no meat. I used navy beans instead because I liked them.  I also tried an old chili trick of replacing some of the liquid with beer then latter I would add some turkey necks or other pieces. Various spices like red or black pepper might make their way in. Like I said it is somewhat different everytime. Split peas soup allways had left over turkey, carrots, celery, onions green split peas and usually curry powder(the pre mixed spices not just the curry leaf).

I learned to make soup from my mom and grandmothers. Soup was made of  what was available. Tasting replaced recipes.

I was macrobiotic, back in the 1980s. I used beans a great deal. As a chef I prepared them quite a bit, too, having a nice-sized vegetarian patronage and some macro private clients. But since then - I don't know - too much advance planning for a food group I don't really crave, you know?

I do eat my share of green beans. I generally group them with "vegetables" rather than "beans"/protein-starches, however, as the actual "bean" part of them is eclipsed by the pod.

Ditto. I like kidney beans and navy beans, but I rarely eat any beans except green/string beans and peas. Most just don't sit right with me. It's hard to explain. However, Costco has been selling 2 lb. bags of sugar snap peas lately and I've been eating those like potato chips!

Maybe if fresh, natural, bean dips were available already prepared, from OUR BENNY beans, instead of just from garbanzos: Navy Bean hummus with hot peppers or a touch of cayenne or basil, you know? Something I don't have to make myself, but to occasionally snack on or just use, an ounce-at-a-time, as a spread -- that'd be my Bean du Jour from time to time. But not something to Menu-Plan, if you get my meaning.

It seems more than a couple of us use peas and green beans for their freshness, greenness, and relative rapidity of preparation.

I'm just now getting back on the bandwagon, determined to live according to my blood type.

My son is also a B and he loves beans.  I usually make a pot of pinto beans and keep those for emergency nights when I don't feel like cooking or he wants a snack.  I cannot find pinto beans on the food list, so not sure if they are ok.

As far as how I make them, I usually have some meat stock left over and frozen and add some chopped turkey sausage and spices: black and white pepper, which apparently we're to avoid, purple salt or sea salt, paprika, and garlic.  

Another concern is we eat Edamame like popcorn and it's on the avoid list!  I nuke a bag and we can sit around popping the beans out while watching a movie.  So, I was really upset to see this as an avoid food for us.

I see people here though are eating beans that are on the avoid list, like hummus.  Another of my favorite foods, but it says no chickpeas/garbanzo beans, I thought.

I love lots of beans.  But I've had ups and downs with them as far as digestion goes.  They don't always digest very well.  Plus, like you said, they are very starchy and I get blood sugar crashes if I rely on them as a protein. They'd probably be best as just a small addition to a meal for me.  But I haven't tried that theory yet.

I've avoided them for a good while now.  I eat my vegetable protein quota with nuts.  

I know I'm not a B, but I'm half a B.  ehhhehehehehe
