Is juicing beneficial because of all the wonderful green vegetables you can get into your diet or is it not that good because of the lost fiber? My 3 year old loves smoothies that are blended in the Vitamix, but I was thinking that perhaps juicing would be better. Do the benefits out-weigh the negatives of lost fiber? Should I add the pulp to the juice right away for the fiber? |

Juicing is good if you can't tolerate the fiber- some people have GI issues and do best on low-fiber diets, so juicing is just about the only way to get fresh veggies into their diets. Juicing is also good for things like barley or wheat grass, when the fiber is inedible.
But in most situations, the whole food is better than the juice. In the specific case of your 3yo, I'd keep on using the vitamix rather than juicing. If you're going to juice it then add the fiber, why bother juicing in the first place? |

Thank you for the responses. The reason for the juicing instead of the blender is because I can do more with the juicer instead of the blender. |

There are beneficial juices on the SWAMI, some of them are difficult to find if you don't have a juicer. My beneificial diamond veg juices are beet, carrot, celery and cucumber. So, you could make half the smoothie in the Vitamix and the other half in the juicer and mix them. |

I am not sure what SWAMI is. Could you please explain? I believe I know what the beneficial foods are, but are diamond foods something more? Thank you so much for your response. |

robynholly, how about just doing both (vitamix and juicing) for whatever you have in mind. Rotate, alternate or take turns.
They both have their good uses. You don't have to choose one and completely leave the other out.

Yeah, it certainly is a lot more enjoyable to get down four big ribs of celery from the blender than trying to chew, chew chew up that many! Makes my stomach feel sooooo good!! |

My wife got a magic bullet blender and now every morning for breakfast, i blend different fruits and non fat yogurt and drink that, with another side to go with it (cereal, leftovers from dinner, etc.) |

From my understanding, there are advantages to both. The good thing about juice is it makes the vitamins from the veggies/fruit more readily available to your cells. The good thing about eating the whole food or drinking a smoothie is obviously the added fiber. Are you familiar with "chewing?" Some people do this - swish the juice around in their mouth for a minute or so before swallowing (so it mixes with your saliva) so your body absorbs it better. I find I naturally do this when drinking smoothies as smoothies are very thick. Anyways, you really can't go wrong with either one. I actually think a combination of both is best - in the same sense that there are advantages to eating both raw and lightly steamed foods. |
