Does anyone eat Hemp seeds? I was thinking about adding them to my salads for change.

Victoria- I started using chia seeds which are great, thanks to your suggestion! Just wondering if any other O' or anyone in general like hemp seeds?

Yes, I use organic, shelled hemp seeds. I add them to my salads, especially ones in which I include walnuts as their flavors seem to complement one another. I also add hemp seeds to green smoothies, as well as my type-compliant version of an açaí Rio bowl. The seeds taste pretty good on their own, though, so sometimes I'll just eat them straight out-of-hand.

If you purchase the shelled hemp seeds, just be sure to keep them in the refrigerator even before opening so the seed oil remains as fresh as possible. (:

I used to smoke it's cousin years ago. I also eat hemp seeds on almost everything, which isn't very much these days. I do have concerns about hemp seeds. I eat them now, because my research on hemp isn't completed enough for me to give them up, but if you look at the difference between hemp and marijuana, and what the 2 are used for primarily, I think we should be eating marijuana seeds and not hemp seeds. I cannot dispute the facts about the nutritional valve of hemp seeds, but if you take into context most other plants that are used for industrial purposes, and the genetic modifications and growing conditions of industrial ("Big Business") agriculture, it kind of worries me about this amazing plants future. The same can be said about marijuana also. Because of its recreational use and it's so called medical use ( I do believe in the great powers of this plant to heal, but we all know it has been exploited and medicinal uses is mostly a cover these days) it has also become one of the most modified and disfigured plant on earth. The bad news is that with their legal status, real, relevant research data is limited. I am just wary about anything that has big business attention, that is sold by the pound. The more they produce the more money they make, is not a philosophy of health and quality. But for now, I eat'em up.

The good news is that once the munitions company DuPont was successful many decades ago in eliminating industrial hemp (a/k/a ditchweed) as a competitive threat to its newly emerging, and burgeoning, patented synthetic fibers, i.e., Dacron/polyester, nylon, rayon, et al, and petro-plastics businesses, major industry all but ignored industrial hemp until just recently. Even now, in the U.S., we're mostly focused on it as a newly discovered nutritional food source, and we import the bulk of our high-quality nutritional hemp seed from Canada because American farmers are still being disallowed by our federal government from growing a crop that has a long history of safe and benefical cultivation. At any rate, industrial hemp hasn't warranted enough attention from the likes of Monsanto to be in danger of being genetically modified anytime soon.

What's really pathetic is how gross political ignorance continues to keep hemp from being legally grown in the U.S. Hemp was at one time such an important agricultural crop that numerous laws, dating back to 1535 and Henry VIII, required farmers to grow a certain quota of hemp annually or be fined for not doing so. Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619, enacted a law requiring all residents to plant industrial hemp. Massachusetts and Connecticut passed similar laws in 1631 and 1632. The original American flag sewn by Betsy Ross was made with hemp cloth. The Declaration of Independence and the Emancipation Proclamation are printed on paper made from hemp. Henry Ford, in 1908, created a Model T whose outer body panels consisted of hemp-based materials ... that a subsequent Popular Mechanics article said had even greater tensile strength and durability than steel.

I used to have hemp oil and now hemp milk when I can get it.

I love hemp seed and use hemp protein fairly often.  I love the flavor and the fact that it has a better omega ratio than most nuts/seeds

I generally agree with the cultivation and use of hemp. Unfortunately i'm subject to random drug screens and I can't afford even a false positive. Every gardening board I've argued the point allways has some bozo who has to jump in and say "you just want to smoke it!"

I tried hemp seed ground in protein shakes and it gave me horribel gas and bloating. Maybe I didn't start out  slow enough and work my way up to a full serving. Thought I did. The powers that be should legalize pot and grow hemp for paper, clothing and rope. If they legalize, they would just charge a gross amount of excise tax and pay on the horrible US deficit.

I bought some shelled hemp seeds recently at a health food store. Have to refrigerate them. Sprinkled some on my apple with peanut butter this morning for breakfast. I wasn't hungry the rest of the morning.

Just a suggestion for if you ever want to try it again: buy the organic, whole 'shelled' hemp seed and then soak your serving amount overnight in about a cup of warm water to which you've added half-to-one teaspoon of quality sea salt (or Himalayan rock salt). Drain and rinse the seeds well right before adding them to your protein shake. This process will neutralize, to a large degree, the seed's remaining enzyme inhibitors (i.e., the ones not in the already removed hull). This type of soak is actually good to do with most nuts/seeds. One other thing, China is the largest producer of industrial hemp at present but I'd recommend you steer clear of hemp seed from there until quality controls are vastly improved. Canada produces some excellent hemp seed, and their organic produce is most often in full compliance with organizational protocols.

FYI ... although I do like the dehulled type of hemp seed because of its texture and nutty flavour, other than ground, this is the only way it can be sold in the U.S. because the federal government doesn't want its citizens to be able to get their hands on viable seed stock which would enable Americans to grow their own hemp plants.

I've seen a lot of people much more trashed on "legal" alcohol. Personally, I don't partake and am not a fan of using 420 (nor do I have any medical reason to do so); however, the illegalization of it while allowing an 'adult' beverage such as 190-proof Everclear to be available to anyone over the age of 18 (in the U.S.) is, for me, merely one more idiotic example of the politics of hypocrisy. Unfortunately, this seems to be increasing, rather than decreasing, in the American political climate today, and that of at least the last 20-plus years. In Colorado it's 21, not 18 for the legal drinking age. Do agree with you for the most part. Pot is "legal" here by prescription   like that's hard to get I don't see it as better or worse, would love to see it grown for paper and cloth.

Sorry, you're right, as it is in almost every state now I'd imagine. While I was in high school, the legal age changed from 18 to 21. I remember college, though, at least somewhat, and I don't recall the age change deterring any under 21 college students from drinking. I do remember the issue being viewed as more of a matter of states' rights at the time because the federal government was imposing its will on all states to increase their minimum drinking age to 21. The Fed's version of an end run was to tell the holdouts, fine, set your own minimum age limits but, if it's not at least 21, you'll receive no more federal road funding (i.e., we won't return to you any of the monies that you already gave us). Too, I think I was confusing the minimum drinking age today with the age that our federal government can send our youngest men and women off to foreign lands to die in ill-advised wars. Oops, think I'm going to have to put a stronger lock on that storage room door ... that bloody soapbox keeps escaping.

How hard are the seeds?

If I soak them overnight, it will be hard to whiz them in my electric seed grinder.  Can they be put directly into the smoothie ingredients and blended?

- or do they need to be dehydrated and then ground in the seed grinder before adding to the blender?

I like my smoothies very creamy and well - smooth!    I grind my flax and chia seeds to a fine powder before adding to the blender.

I LOVE organic hemp seed and have some every morning on fruit, etc., along with my chia seed, of course! I must try the butter. Thanks, C_Sharp!

If they are hulled they are not hard. I have no trouble with running them through the blender without pregrinding.

Victoria, I'd say the shelled hemp seeds are closer in texture to raw pine nuts, but much smaller and still softer even than pine nuts. With the shelled hemp seed, you can eat them straight from the spoon without any problem. I guess the best way to describe it is they have more of a creamy mouth feel than a crunchy one. This is what helps them blend up so well in smoothies.
