I've noticed that my wife who is an A+ can handle sweets a lot better than I can ... who am an O nonnie. Is this official? We go out and she has desert and feels no "repercussions" from it, whereas if I have it... I really regret it.
Any insight into this would be appreciated.
thank you. |

It's quite often a 'Nonnie' thing! Sure is true of me - I don't eat desserts any more, nor add any sweeteners to the foods or beverages I prepare. Don't miss it any more, not one bit. The natural sweetness of foods is so wonderful! |

It could be because you're a nonnie and she may not be. It could be because wheat-laden sweets are much more harmful for O's than for A's- it may not be JUST the sugar you're reacting to. A third option is that you're more aware of your body and know when you've eaten something unhealthy, while she's less aware and can't "feel" the damage being done by the bad foods. |

Xplorer, Curious what reactions you feel to sweets? My husband and I are both A blood, but he seems to handle sweets better than I do. I'm a secretor, don't know what he is. Lin |

I like sweets.. but much more for its mental -self pity- thing. I think I could do without more and more, but paying a price never seems to kick in until after I ate the sweets. Generally I just stay away from places where they sell sweets. I have no needs for it at home. one sis does not eat sweets and is fanatical about looks, I think in that attitude it's a self punishment, yet she really would rather eat cheese.. she is B. I wonder if nonnies suffer 'guilt'? I do as I really wish I could just give it all up, but then what good would living be? I play games .. like having a scoop of ice cream only when I fill up my car with gas, never buying any for my home- way to dangerous.. little by little over many years I am much better at NOT rewarding ME.. and seeing that as a good thing and with that I learned that I can make a big difference in healing my gut and reducing diabetes damage by much .. I think however that guilting someome for their 'needs' is dangerous, makes one feel superior and the other sufffffers.. (talking about my feelings here) |

Interesting post Goldie. I can relate to the reward thing. I'm lucky I'm an A I guess, have always loved sweets and things like golden syrup! Oh man! (Sorry O's) But nowadays (being over 50 now) I try to limit it to things like honey and maple, occasional cereal bars/good choc, more sensible sweet stuff. But I confess I do have treats sometimes but tend to steer completely clear of purely sugar laden sweets and also biscuits. I think, just don't go there, don't even have one biscuit ever, and that works for me. Also ice cream. I virtually never have that. I have occasional cakes more. If you limit it to one type maybe that helps?? I'm tired and waffling now I feel. Hey, don't feel guilty. Don't even go there! |

I feel guilty if I eat too much fruit and never enjoyed sweets in general. Not my thing, but i believe being an o has something to do with it.
Do not be hard on yourself, just accept who you are and go with it. |

From this A secretor, I can tell you that I had a huge sweet addiction, one that affected me tremendously...although I've given up added sweeteners for the most part...I do use dates in my morning oats, and sometimes date sugar or agave, but that is rare and far between. Every once in a while, added sugar finds its way into my body (usually by accident when eating out, which is also rare) and the repercussions are: craving and caving into eating processed wheat, which leads to more cravings and so on. After eating sugar, it usually takes me close to a week to rebound. |

I'm an O and I love sweets so I don't think it's an A thing. They are so addicting though. If I have one p iece of chocolate I seem to need more. I've made some "compliant recipes" with agave and I find they are just as addicitive if not more. |

yes the thing to do is to not have any in the house..
and if it is then it has to be 90% chocolate.. at least if I eat it it's still good enough for me..
I ate rice yesterday and gained 2 pounds.. Just not worth the calories and the water retention.. and the arthritic kicking up .. all it took was one day !
If I am to gain it is going to be with pure chocolate cream ice cream, or an added slice of fruit.. // and darn it: NO guilt..
I DO BELIEVE that GUILT adds the pounds.. and makes me miserable in more ways than weight and pain..

Everyone is different. And sometimes we go through periods of change. I used to be a HUGE sweet fanatic before I had health problems. Then I got to the point where I couldn't stand them at all. Physically they made me feel awful and I wouldn't even crave them.
Now, I think because I'm feeling better, I'm starting to crave them more. I hope to never go back to what I used to be. But I plan to enjoy some now and then. There is a reason so many people are addicted to sugar. Because it tastes good. Although I have learned that there are a lot of healthy foods that taste GREAT and don't even have to be sweet. For me, when I was a sugar fanatic, that addiction skewed my tastebuds to where I didn't like healthy food. Like veggies. But now I do love them. Bitter ones, etc. I think now I'm a salad fanatic. I need one every day and I love them. Without dressings. Just olive oil. |

90% chocolate? I keep 100% baking chocolate in the house. I don't eat it often, but when I do, it's just the pure stuff, no sugar or vanilla added. It doesn't take much to satisfy a chocolate craving, and it never leads to sugar cravings because there are no sugars in it, not even agave. |

Same here. I keep it in a drawer out of sight and have a little when the mood hits. Thing is that it has no 'fuse' i.e.sugar, vanilla, milk or whatever. If you don't light the fuse the bomb won't go off. |

It would be really cool to know your secretor status. I think it makes a good impact on how to know which foods to eat and other things. I've been wanting to test my sons and wife but haven't gotten around to it yet. Hey Briny, I hit 132 last night!!!!!!! Thank you for your help! I am continuing to gain weight, PRAISE THE LORD and pass the food. hehehhe That's 18 pounds I've gained. Wow. Your posts early on really did help me a LOT. So thank you. Sorry to hijack the thread. Please resume!!! That 100% chocolate is pretty stiff. I was eating the 90 for a while, but I do admit I like the 70 percent the best. Lindt. Mmmmmmmmmmm... And yes, it has sugar in it. I guess I'm not as good as some of you all. hehehhe For me, I don't really care. Eating one and a half squares every few days doesn't make me want to binge. At least not yet. |

I enjoy something sweet after a meal...lunch or dinner. I prefer a fruit or chocolate pastry, frozen yogurt, pie, profiterole.. I don't go there now, since er4yt (especially ice cream..oooh bad stomach ache) but sometimes.....my resistance is gone! As a teenager I craved sweets, things like chocolate, fruit pies, pastries, not hard sugar candies . I don't get real cravings anymore but have never lost the desire to enjoy a sweet! btw...my O son, O husband and O Dad always want dessert and my 2 best friends, both O, crave sweets alot! |

I live for desserts and am a fabulous baker, that said...I have not even contemplated finding BT replacements for my sweets I have no left behind. I do have to say I have bought a juicer and real fruit juice is very satisfying. Do I miss all those fabulous delicious treats..yep am I going to eat them? nope. My A- husband is has absolutely no self control, if there were sweets in the house, that is all he would eat. So it is better no sweets at all. Fruit is your dessert, chew well. |

I keep some in the fridge for just this reason. One square is usually enough, and I only have some every once in a blue moon. |

I keep a bar of 85% Vivani and maybe once a week, I'll eat one of the little squares. That's all I really want and I never would have believed that my appetite would change so drastically. After all, I was an ice cream addict all my life, and easily ate a pint a day for decades. Also chocolate was something I couldn't stop eating. My, how things have changed for the better!!!!! |

Very rarely do I crave sweets. Most of the time, it would be chocolate and a piece of fruit usually makes it go away. I noticed if I eat more veggies and lots of water -- I could go without sweets forever |

You will eventually get so used to 80% then 85% that you will not like the sweet stuff any more.. REMEMBER choc is good for you.. it fixes the head nicely.. the heart also.. so a little can go a long way to be medicine.. |

I feel bad about sweets also, have had a sweet tooth my whole life. I stick to dates & every other weekend have a gluten free chocolate mousse treat. Red wine, chocolate & dry cheese like parmesan can also be a good dessert for Os. |
