i'm wondering why coconut is a no-no for blood type O? if O's are typical of a sluggish thyroid, i thought coconut is excellent for thyroid? most natural health practioners rave about the benefits of coconut for thyroid health. thanks!!

Coconut is an avoid for Os, because it:

"Enhances effect of other food toxins. Flocculates serum or precipitates serum proteins."

You could have found this out by looking up the value for coconut in typebase:

The primary factor for rating foods for the blood type diet is how the food interact with blood type antigens.  The impact of a food on thyroid health may have been considered in rating a food, but it would not have been the only factor in rating.

Most natural health practitioners don't understand Blood Type Diet, or the underlying concept of individuality. They just see foods as having certain healing properties, or not. If coconut oil strengthens the thyroid, or kills candida, then it follows that coconut oil is a good choice for ANYBODY with a weak thyroid or candida overgrowth. And, if coconut oil is so healing, then whole coconut must be good too, right?

The reality is that coconut oil is an AMAZING healing food- for some individuals. For others, it inhibits healing because it's toxic for their individual body chemistry. For others it falls somewhere in between. Naturopaths may not notice that the coconut oil doesn't promote healing, because other changes made at the same time (other herbs or healing modalities, other beneficial dietary changes) caused the person to heal, and they don't realize that the coconut oil wasn't helping.

Some individuals simply do horribly on coconut oil- there's somethign about the oil that just doesn't work for their body system. And even for those who do OK (or fantastic) on coconut oil, not all do wel on whole coconut. There are proteins and sugars in whole coconut that are hard for some bodies to process, even when the oil itself is healing.

There is a TON of nutritional information out there, and little of it takes individuality into account. Coconut is bad! Soy is bad! Soy is good! Well, the truth is they're all right. And they're all wrong. Soy is an amazing healing food for most As, but  a toxin and endocrine disrupter for most Os.

Interesting because coconut oil is a superfood on my Swami.  So not bad for all O's.  I was thrilled to see that, as I have a few gallons of it laying around!

Just wondering what makes it good for O nonnie Hunters.....?

I just realized coconut oil is an avoid for the A's in my family and since I don't know secreter status of my O kids, could be an avoid for some of them as well.  

Bummer.  Need a cooking oil that would be compliant for all of us...

Rice Bran Oil.  It also has a very high cook point.  And, it tastes great.  I find I don't like foods cooked in anything else.

Not many stores carry it but it's easy to buy online. We buy by the FIVE GALLON and transfer it to empty glass Gerolsteiner bottles and store it in the freezer.


Knowledge is power.  SWAMI gives you the diet that will unlock the key to better health, and it's all based on your unique individuality.

The Blood Type Diet and The Genotype Diet are two separate plans.  The BTD fits you to your blood type gene.  The GTD fits your genes to you, by changing what genes are able to express themselves.

I would defer to Dr. D. for the best answer, but I would think that SWAMI would use the data at any age.  It will be more accurate once the growing stops, which would be about 18 for girls/women and 21 for boys/men.

I will look into the rice bran oil. Never heard of it before. I cant stand the olive oil. It has a very bitter taste to my husband and I. I am a super taster. I made date squares the other day and the olive oil ruined them. Being the non waster I am, I am forcing myself to eat them.

Coconut oil is a neutral for me but coconut meat is an avoid, according to my SWAMI.

Remember, you are on a "one size fits none" diet.

Those of us who have the SWAMI software program have moved onto Dr. D's latest book, The GenoType Diet.  Instead of four blood types, he has broken down the types into six different genotypes.  Most of us started on the Blood Type Diet and eventually moved to The GenoType Diet.

There is some cross over between the two diets, but I would say the main reason most of us have switched to The GenoType Diet and purchased our SWAMI software is that it is even more individualized and the software gives more expansive food lists based upon your family/personal health history.  For me, making this a "lifetime" diet and not a quick, lose weight diet, required that I have more food choices tailored to my individual needs.  Hunter, as is mentioned in one of the earlier posts, is one of the six genotypes.  I hope this quick explanation is helpful!

Whichever diet you follow is great!  As you stay on the BTD for some time, you may decide to make the switch to The Genotype Diet, but both are great!  Maybe a good next step would be for you to read Dr. D's second book, Live Right For Your Type.

Walnut oil is beneficial or neutral for all types. I really like it in baked items. (pumpkin, or sweet potato breads etc)

I use olive or the walnut for all my cooking

I love Rice Bran Oil  - It's a diamond bennie for this Hunter    Like others have said, it has a high smoke point so is great for cooking at temp.  I also get olive oil, walnut, sesame oil as diamonds!

Hi all - I live in the Pacific on a small island surrounded by all things coconut!  The Nu (juice) is a staple in my diet as is the flesh - fresh not cooked - although I don't use the oil much except for my skin.  What is the exact issue with the coconut for Os - is it only the oil or the flesh AND the juice as everything points to it being wonderful and has not affected me adversely to my knowledge.

I'm type O too and new here. Is it possible that a lifetime of eating fresh coconut products is evidence enough that coconut could be at least neutral for us? I can't tell if it is beneficial to my insides, but the oil definitely improves my acne AND dryness, and I hear it is good for oral health as well. I would hate to give it up now if it only makes me feel better.

Sorry, yes, I still have skepticism. I don't mean to bring negativity!

Coconut oil is OK for some individuals. O nonnies have coconut oil as neutral. On SWAMI (computer-generated personalized diets) many individuals get coconut oil as neutral, beneficial, or diamond (super-beneficial.) Dr D's work is much more complex than the basic BTD, because he's done more research since the BTD was completed.

If you're not ready to invest in a SWAMI, then you need to make some decisions about how closely you want to follow the diet in the books. If you know that coconut oil makes you feel better, it's logical to continue using it for now.

As for fresh coconut, the reality is that you've never "not eaten it" so you don't know how much healthier you'd be if you didn't consume it. Still, if you're not ready to give up fresh coconut, then don't. You'll still benefit from following the O diet "most of the way" even if you don't make 100% of the recommended changes.
