Hi Guys,

I'm A positive. There are certain things I am trying to incorporate into my diet, such as pineapple, peanuts etc but there are certain things I need to find alternatives for because they are everywhere in my Diet!

Bread
Butter
Cheese

I am UK based-can anyone recommend decent alternatives to these that are easily found on the supermarket shelf?
Also how does sugar affect type A's?

You'll find that ditching the supermarket shelf and making your own food will make life a whole lot easier on BTD (and much much better for your health )

You can replace bread with healthy grains and psuedograins like rice, quinoa, amaranth, etc.  An up-to-date list of foods for each blood type can be found on the Typebase value page found under "Online Support" along the top of the page.  Check out the recipe page if you want something fancier than just plain grains.

Butter can be replaced by ***ghee***.  I think some people on this forum practically have a ghee addiction - it's SO good...and healthy.

As for cheese, there are a couple cheeses that are OK for type A - look under the typebase values.  The best thing to do if you really want to do BTD is to get swami.  it's personalized for you and you only.  You'd probably find that you'd have a lot more options with swami than with BTD alone (and you're likely to have better results)

Stay away from sugar as much as possible - it's BAD NEWS for all blood types.  You can use compliant sweeteners, but keep in mind that 1 tsp is considered a serving.

Ok so I'm trying to adapt to these new things as best as possible but very hard for me to not to shop at supermarkets. Ghee is indian butter fat right?!
So if i replaced buttered toast in the morning to rice crispies and soy milk and my sandwiches at lunch to rice/sushi etc that would help?

Yes, ghee is pure butter fat.  There are many threads as well as a blog by Dr. D. discussing how to make it at home.

Be very careful of the ingredients in your rice crispies!  
I use 100% rice cakes and spread peanut or almond butter(again, watching ingredients) on them.

Compliant vegetables and rice with or without a fish portion are great lunch ideas.  Commercial sushi is usually accompanied by a wheat-based soy sauce, so may not be the best choice.

Of course, I am being very technically accurate with these statements to show where some common pitfalls are to following this plan successfully.  You choose the level of compliance you want or need to be...

Hi tobias, and welcome!  

It can feel confusing at the beginning because this is really a different way of looking at food that we were accustomed to.  Do you have one of Dr. D's recent books, such as LR4YT?  It helps to focus on all the foods that ARE on your list so that you can begin to build new habits.  It's good that you are thinking in terms of things like sushi instead of sandwiches.  As you grow in this program, you will be able to keep refining your system.  The thing that makes shopping for prepared foods so treacherous is that the list of hidden ingredients makes eating for your type very hard.  We have all been where you are now, and I feel safe in saying that we have probably all come to prepare most of our own food.

Things like "sushi" or "rice crispies" are only as good as the list of ingredients used to make them.

thanks for the help. I have ER4YT but not LR4YT. Do you recommend this is the next purchase?
I want to be compliant but i'm not too fussed if my rice crispies are 99% ok! This thing is hard enough without having to go cold turkey!

Would Gluten free bread be ok?

Just like the rice crispies, the bread is totally fine if the ingredients are allowed.

As stated, most people end up making most things themselves, but it takes time to get to that point.  It's totally find to keep using store bought foods, just always read labels.  You don't have to "go cold turkey".  If the items are only partially compliant, you can start with that.  Take your time, ease into it; it's more a lifestyle than a diet.

The reason most people end up giving up on storebought foods is that they almost always contain at least one "avoid" ingredient, and it ends up being easier to just make stuff yourself, but it's a learning process.  Better to learn to swim first instead of just jumping in and drowning, right?

ER4YT is the foundation book and it's good to start with that one.  LR4YT is my favorite blood type book and has more up-to-date food lists.  Plus, when you're ready to get your secretor test (which will really help you fine-tune your program), it includes that in the food list.

I am O so I can not come close to advising on what foods.. other people will do that instead..

but give us a little more info. as to age where you live and why you came here in the first place.

You have just entered a whole new way of thinking, of acting out, expecting things, living and learning things.. nothing will ever be the same again..

It is a decision having little to do with dieting.  Its a notion of better health and the concept the GENO healing is a whole other topic.. The above mentioned book is the greatest, depending on how much you like to read.. if you have specific interest in certain illnesses then get the book for that area of interest, as they are much smaller .. this is a concept that will consume your thoughts and your first post was right on target.. so keep asking questions and don't see this diet as a prohibition but as on allowance of things .. then add all the things new to you.. and add pleasure to your new life..


  


Being here is invaluable, but not enough. We need ALL the Doctors. I needed them for a very small cancer spot-I could never feel!!! Please do your mammograms! Doing so saved me from cancer later on. I am grateful! Thanks for learning from my experience! I was lucky! I wish the same for YOU!

It will get easier...believe me...been there. I was soooo hungry when I first started with the BTD!  I learned to take baby steps, one day at a time. It takes some experimentation and a little time but you will soon get into your own rhythm and find what works for you.  
Bottom line....you will feel healthier.

Ok, so in your current daily diet you have quite a bit of butter, bread and cheese....is that what you are saying by "they are everywhere in my diet"...

A couple of questions:

How is your veggie selection at the stores you stop at?

Does your daily life require you to eat away from home on a regular basis?

What are you looking to achieve through the blood type diet?

Lastly, take a deep breath....things will fall into place

Welcome to the forum and to this lifestyle. I am UK based also, though not 100% compliant - I haven't been able to give up pizza, it's my favourite food and is almost entirely avoids, but the changes I have made really have made a difference.

I don't have time to make my own foods, so I am stuck mostly with supermarket foods. I had almost stopped eating bread even before BTD, but I do find that I have less bloating with fresh bread. Ryvita with peanut butter (assuming you're not allergic to nuts) is tasty, and Ryvita is compliant - rye flour and a little salt, no other grains  

I tried soy milk and for me personally it was one of the most disgusting things I've tried to drink, but I get on quite well with goat's milk, which is neutral and there has been a noticable reduction in mucus production (sorry, gross).

Sometimes it's less a case of finding substitues ie compliant versions of the same item, but more of finding an alternative - something compliant that is different from your old way of eating but which is tasty and satisfying to eat.

My husband is an A.  He stopped using sugar in his coffee, which he thought he could never do, but now he prefers his coffee black, no sugar, no cream.  Ryvita with peanut butter is an excellent suggestion.  Wasa breads are good, too, with the rye.  My husband changed over to ghee and really likes it.  We buy Ezekial bread which he toasts when he has eggs.  Otherwise, he makes oatmeal adding oat bran and blueberries and eats that with soy milk.  Some soy milks are terrible so you might have to try them all out.

My favorite book is LR4YT.

Vegetables and fruit are super for A's.

What I found that really helped me avoid the avoids was to:

1. go through my cupboards and remove everything that was an avoid (eg pasta)
2. go shopping and fill up my pantry with the beneficial/neutral beans, flours, pastas (eg rice pasta/rice millet pasta) etc.
3. as for butter it's a no go -- when I use it I make ghee at home
4. As for bread, it's a staple yes. I use spelt or spent/oat bread, which I am fortunate to have an organic bakery at the corner that makes it regularly. In lieu of that, there are rye crackers, sesame/oat crackers that are good to have on hand (again, check the labels to make sure there are no wheat/additives in the brand).

I have yet to get a bread maker, but it's on the list. In the meantime, I find I can easily bake a simple banana bread with walnuts that is compliant.

As for eating out as an A, I find the easiest thing for me is Asian. Rice noodles with some veggies/tofu or chicken is usually easy to find and doesn't contain any avoids (with the exception of the vinegars used in some of the side bowls of sauces, which are easy enough not to use...)

As for cheese it's mostly a no-go...check the list.
Goat cheese, feta are okay.
I believe mozzarella is too, but I rarely use it.

All of the other cheeses are too acidic, that's why they are on the avoid category.

Yes it's a change of habit, but once you start elminating the avoids, you will quickly notice an improvement. Then it's just a matter of sticking to it. I generally will carry snacks around with me (some nuts, fruit occasionally, etc) which helps when you're on the run throughout the day, so as to avoid the wheat/dairy menus that are so predominant out there....

Welcome!  I was like you initially, and was hoping to be able to find everything I needed on the shelves of the local WF.  However, I began to read all the labels and found so many avoids, that I either started making the stuff myself or eliminating it altogether.  For instance, I don't eat any bread anymore because I can't find a fully compliant bread that I like, so I just don't eat it.  The same with the different milks, although one of these days I plan to try making almond milk.  Those things are just not that important to me anymore.  If I want to have nut butter, I put it on a banana or a rice cake.

Ghee is super simple to make.  There is a very recent thread with pictures and instructions and help.  I would highly recommend that.  It is delicious, too!  I just made some yesterday and it tastes like burnt caramel!  YUMMY!!!

Even though I am an O, I eat more fish than red meat, which is also what I am supposed to do according to my SWAMI.  Fish and veggies are fantastic choices for you.

I find that you will go through phases when you first start the diet and become more comfortable with what you can and can not eat.  My diet now is very different than when I began seven months ago.

I thought I remember reading here on the forum about some really nice, compliant artisan bread that is only available in the UK.  Maybe someone else knows about it or you can do a search of the forum.

You're lucky - all the large supermarkets in the UK have extensive "free from" ranges of food where great alternatives can be found.  Although you will have an easier time in Sainsbury's than in ASDA because the clientele is more discerning..Tesco is ok, too.  You will have to find a superstore to get the full range obviously. And you can get any protein and any vegetables you want, too.  So you're in a good place in general.  Just bear in mind that "free from" wheat for example often means full of maize or some other avoid so you do have to read the ingredients list.  

In the long-term you will find that the "substitutes" rarely hit the same spots as your current staples.  So whilst it is clearly a great start to avoid the avoids and to find compliant substitutes you'll have more fun and will find it more satisfying to go down your food lists and say - all these beneficials and neutrals that I've never heard of - I wonder what they taste like?  Aim to try out a couple of new foods a week and try to create meals around that

Hi Tobias,

Biona is a good brand for wheat free things - they do a few compliant rye bread loaves which have no avoids in them. Omega loaf and pumpkin seed. Rather dense at first, but it's quite nice with a little peanut butter on top. If you have a Waitrose near you they are really good at catering for wheat free things and heathier alternatives. The also do a fresh rye loaf from the Village Bakery which is my favourite.

The Village bakery also do reasonably priced rice pasta - look in the gluten free sections of Sainsbury's and Tesco and they have penne brown rice pasta and a vegetable tricolour one.

I'm not sure if you like goats cheese, but I like Saint Helen's Farm goats cheese - they should do it in Tescos and Sainsbury's.

On the butter front you can try ghee - Pure Pride Butter Ghee - it's in a little gold tin pot with a cow on the front.

I have constantly tried sticking to the AB blood type diet - i find that i love food too much - bacon, ham, cheese, cream - you name it - i ate it.  I always somehow keep on coming back to the AB blood type diet -my only downfall is that  i have no will power whatsoever - that's just me.

  I have started the blood type diet again today and hopefully will stick to it - the one thing that i am really surprised at - i bought some weetabix (i know that being a non secreter - it's classified as an avoid)and rice krispies - and just happened to read the ingredient list and to my surprise they both have barley malt as one of the listed ingredients - i will still have the cereal with goats milk and maybe 1 teaspoon of white sugar (in my book it states that i am allowed white/brown sugar) but in a lot of the message boards it's actually prohibited by all types.  

I feel that if i have the cereal (which contains the barley malt) then i will be good the rest of the time - it's better to take it slowly.  Although i have stocked up on fish and turkey - (sardines in Olive Oil and Mackeral in Olive Oil).

I must admit that when i do stick to the blood type diet then all my aches and pains somehow disappear - if only i had the willpower.

Pain is a powerful motivator...  Mine is constant, just less when I eat all superfoods...  Remember that if all you buy are beneficial foods, that is all you will have to choose from to make meals.  you just have to make the decision to only buy good foods.

You may as well use up the cereals you've just bought- but when it's time to buy more, look for healthier alternatives. Rice Chex now uses molasses instead of barley malt, and is officially gluten-free, and I think it's OK for all  blood types (although some individuals do poorly with rice.)
