I was just reading Suzanne's blog here and I just read that Cabbage is not an avoid for type 0's. In the book "ER4YT" it says it IS an avoid and I have been doing so but is this something that was written in error? Would love to know. Thanks! |

It's an avoid for me. I don't like cabbage anyway. I'm glad it's not a diamond superfood! |

I suppose it is a black dot avoid for O (gatherers) in general. |

Cabbage is a thyroid inhibitor and should be avoided even if it is "neutral" for any blood type. |

I was provoked. How dare you, Tom! Quite a daring claim! I hope I understood you wrong.
If you have no tendency to hypothyroidism, and you feel good after eating raw sauerkraut and onions, why should you avoid that? Cauliflower affects same way, and broccoli in smaller amounts.
However, cruciferous vegetables - especially broccoli - have quite a few healthy sides. I won't avoid them all, only cauliflower. |

Of course. I have SWAMI Xpress already, but I suppose we all know that SWAMI isn't nevertheless infallible. |

I've found the best way to see if a neutral is not for me is to take it out of my diet for seven days, then put it back in. If I don't notice a difference, then it's truly neutral. If it makes me feel worse or I have problems I didn't notice before, then it's out. I like collards better than cabbage anyway--much tastier. |

Cruciferous vegetables are more of a problem for people with thyroid issues if they are raw. Cooking them usually takes care of the issue as I understand it. |

Thank you Jane! Maybe that's true. ...and thank you Tom for the link. That was an interesting article! I think I understand something of your point. However, I didn't find any information that a person whose thyroids work 'hyper' (not 'hypo') must avoid broccoli. Instead, if I interprete it correctly, hypothyroidists should avoid cabbage, cauliflower (and maybe also broccoli in very big amounts). What do you think? |

Hypo = no cabbage, somewhat limited broccoli etc...
Hyper = maybe- it would depend on "why" they have hyperthyroidism. It would have to be on an experimental basis as this would be an untested / proven remedy. |

That's strange how our SWAMI's work, aye. I just recently ticked off "thyroid problems" on my SWAMI form to see what changes I'd have. It doesn't let you put 'hypo' or 'hyper', but I would assume that by looking at my weight it may guess that I tend toward the "hypo". Anyway, it moved cabbage from Avoid into Neutral, and broccoli is a Diamond for me. Go figure! |

Is this not the opposite of what Tom just said? Maybe I'm having a duh moment. Gatherers book does have cabbage as a black dot. Oh ok you turned off the thyroid problem. |

Another gatherer here who has checked thyroid problems and gets broccoli as a super food and cabbage as a neutral... I'm also a super taster and like them both and will keep eating them as long as they aren't black dots or avoids. |

I have been eating plenty of cabbage (both raw & lightly cooked) in the last couple of weeks & feel so much better... My skin is staying clearer, I am losing weight & am feeling full more easily, without having to eat as much meat Regarding thyroid, when I do the iodine test (painting it on) it lasts 14-15 hrs before it has faded, so I think that indicates I am not hypo?? Also, as I stated elsewhere, I am not 100% convinced I am a nonnie & cabbage is ok for O secretors... Anyway, since I don't have access to collard greens, I can't substitute those and cabbage is a black dot (not an avoid) for Gatherers, so better than me just eating lettuce... Anyone else do ok on cabbage? |
