I have recently started seeing an acupuncturist/osteopath/naturopath who - while being familiar with the BTD, and who says she has worked with it in the past - is absolutely adamant that Aloe Vera juice would be a good thing for me and my digestive problems.

I always knew it was a "no=no", and told her so,  but she is really trying to persuade me to give it a try, saying that things are not always as black and white in holistic medicine, and that I should give it a try.

Have any other type Os tried it, and if so, what happened?

Incidentally, my GI issues are IBS, cramps, constipation, and malabsorption.  Recent blood tests showed exceedingly low levels of Vit B12 and D - so much so that the endocrinologist has given me shots because he said the levels were dangerous.

Any experiences would be welcomed?

Well, I have bowel issues also, it seems my mom still does, but that's another story.  I did try aloe
vera in the past, before the btd, and it sent me to the bathroom, caused some "gripping" or "griping"
and I wouldn't recommend it.  I also used senna before the btd, and that was even worse.  I now believe that getting off gluten is the most important healer for my intestinal issues, and taking a good
probiotic.

My ND, who has only heard of BTD, not very familiar tried to get me to try aloe.  I let her know it was an avoid.  She did not push it anymore.

I used AV juice for many months before I knew about the BTD and my naturopath recommended it as well.  It is a very powerful gut detoxifier....and it really helps with constipation (which was partly why I used it).  I was also using it because I was having gallbladder problems and AV juice can break an attack.  Anyway, I stopped using it when I started the GTD, but I never had any bad reactions to it while I took it.  I think the biggest reason that I ended up stopping is was actually because I remembered something my allergist told me about aloe (topical).  He always told me to be careful because aloe is a protein and as such, it is very easy for the body to develop an allergy to it.  When I started the GTD, one of the hallmarks of an explorer is sensitivies and allergies....so I figured it "fit" for me not to use it.  But as I said, I didn't have any bad reactions to it.   However, I really want to heal my gut and decided to just follow the diet for a year no matter what...see how it went.  So that is what I'm sticking with for now.  I do believe healing the gut is the key to all the digestive issues......

Eva, I was diagnosed with IBS with same symptoms in addition to GERD, so I feel your pain.

After years of trying alternative therapies (which included aloe vera juice and herbal formulas) with very little success, I finally achieved some help from my chiropractor who performed some extensive urine-based lab testing and recommended specific Chiroyzme formulas for my specific issues.  It took several months, but my condition gradually improved.  However the late night gas pains never completely left me.  Chirozyme does require a diagnosis by a practitioner,as the wrong enzymes can make your symptoms worse.

Had I been doing BTD back then, I would have tried whatever Dr. D has in that department, first.  It wasn't until I started on the BTD and gave up wheat/corn/dairy except for rare occasions, that everything began to clear up.  I also started taking Polyflora O which has helped IMMENSELY!   The dietary changes along with that are making my intestines so happy I could jump for joy!    That said, I also take a couple of tablespoons of ground flax seed every day.  It is soothing for the intestines and keeps you really regular, plus a diamond food for O's.  If you haven't taken it before, start with a teaspoon daily stirred into water or your favorite compliant juice and work your way up to 1 or 2 tablespoons.  Always grind your own flax seeds and keep refrigerated.  Pre-ground becomes rancid very quickly and is not so good for you.

I still take my digestive enzymes and am experimenting with less and less.  I don't want to rock the boat too much, because things are working really well for me right now...bottom line, I would avoid the aloe and stick with the diet.  If you can afford it, get your specific BT Polyflora.  The RIGHT probiotics make all the difference.  I took some of the best PB's money could buy prior to this and they helped a bit, although sometimes would cause painful gas if not taken on an empty stomach.  I now understand that not every probiotic is right for every blood type.  It's worth it to get the right stuff.

Remember, aloe is an avoid for O's. For some, it may be healing, but not for O's.  I spent a lot of money on it over the years and it never helped.  Follow the diet and get your BT specific supplements...they have helped me profoundly!

thanks for sharing your experiences, everyone, very useful info.

I think it is a definite avoid for me, and the therapist who persuaded me to buy it was just being too pushy and not really listening to me...needless to say, I won'tbe going back to her.

STAY AWAY FROM AVOIDS.. is the Mantra I need to hear and shout and remember..

Read my last post in Gatherer diabetes.. I went of just some .. ok a lot.. but I also paid the price of getting
shingles (even after vaccine)
thrush in the mouth
bleeding gums
water retention
diabetes kicking
neuropathy kicking
eyes light sensitive

I mean the list just keeps going on.. the only thing that saves me from total disaster is that I only went of for 2 month ---- a long time---- and I ate Beneficial's the rest of the time..

do it for the love for your self.. and don't listen to those who stray.. no good will come of it.. they just want to sell products.. and

I ask why are you going to the Docs in the first place?? I am asking for a reason- email me privately and I will answer you

Being here is invaluable, but not enough. We need ALL the Doctors. I needed them for a very small cancer spot-I could never feel!!! Please do your mammograms! Doing so saved me from cancer later on. I am grateful! Thanks for learning from my experience! I was lucky! I wish the same for YOU!

The problem with aloe vera might be the other ingredients. I have aloe vera in my garden and use it when needed, e.g. for sunburn. It is great for that. A friend of mine (also an O) uses home grown aloe vera as a toothpaste. She swears by it (and she has beautiful teeth).

I don't know if throwing her over is the best idea...  Unless you already know of someone better...

I have a practitioner that was recommending supps that were avoids, and I just let her know that I wasn't going to take avoids.  She was seeing the benefits of what I was doing and was willing to look deeper into BTD/GTD and she has now started following the diet, at least in part.  She definitely asks me for input when suggesting supplements for my family.

Don't think so... the first lot I tried was 99.9% pure, so it would've had to be something major in that .1% whatever, to give me
the reaction it did... We are talking about hives all over where I used it...This is one nonnie who cannot go anywhere near most stuff that is an avoid...Wonder if being an "Rh-" & an Explorer  has something to do with it as well??!!

I have used AV in the past for similar conditions and cannot remember any adverse effects...however I now avoid it totally since discovering it is not recommended for O´s. Like Robyn Mac I use freshly ground flaxseeds every day and find they really help all my digestive issues..

Perhaps I´m resilient, but I haven´t noticed any negative effects either with topical AV...I have several generations of plants in  my kitchen which always are handy for burns etc....but definitely I would rather go with the correct food and probiotic.

Topical use is fine. Ingestion is not recommended.

I would not use aloe.  If you are still having these health issues, I would recommend ghee and/or Intrinsa, Gastro D, Polyflora.

To keep your bowels moving, I recommend the ground flax seed and/or 1/4 cup of rice at night time.

Sharing with the best of intentions.
