I don't want to sound alarmist but kind of became scared when I found out my weight today at work...

Basically, I've been eating Grass Fed Beef or Cod at practically every meal...  I've been recovering from eating sashimi at a local restaurant two weeks ago (palpitations and out of breath-- i think i ate msg/wheat).

I'm very very sensitive and I know carbs really aren't helpful.. My body wants a low carb diet.  However I've been on a zero carb diet.. I'm just trying to absorb the foods I eat and haven't eaten any neutrals in a very long time..  I get ravenous cravings at night when I eat almost anything and I know my body is craving food hardcore, though I eat TONS of meats and the fat from meat...  I can't tolerate sugar and I am worried about what I can eat without side effects (even veggies)

I don't know my secretor status or genotype (yet) but am willing to pay to find out..

I need an offline phone buddy who understands that BTD and healing the gut.digestion.  I want to stay connected and regain my health.  I need a buddy who understands alternative medicine and how important affirmations/mind body medicine is too.

Hey Lola,

Just moved to Jacksonville Fl actually..  I was curious as to what cooking styles are best for digestion and absorption.  I know raw may be ideal but I thought about getting an electronic steamer from Amazon.  

When I am making hotter items it usually feels better on the system but I dont know if this is just illusion either.  I know with meat.. rare is better for me.. but is that the case with veggies?  I am trying to find out..

I need to take the secretor test but don't want to jump into the genotype diet yet..  I am a bit worried about confusing myself.. I need clarity, especially now.

Hi Steve you are on the right trac here for your problems. I'd eat the meat rare and with some beneficial spices and herbs and the veggies thinly cut and stir fried with a bit of beneficial oil and some spoons of water if useful to get them a little softened but in a quick way; salt and spices to your taste, so you can have all the pros of raw and of cooked veggies.

Steve don't be afraid of the the genotype system. Just have someone measure you and post the measurements here.

The genotype diet will do a bunch of things  for you, so it will remove the guess work with food. Weight gain may take some time as the gut has to heal, which it seems like you know already.

  I will be attending the conference in June and this is one of my questions for Dr D.  What is the best way to help people gain weight??  Hope I get the chance to ask it.. Last time I left the room and missed the whole question time.

I think I know part of the answer.. follow the diet and concentrate on the high caloric foods, but I want to hear it from the Master ( smile).

O's that are hungry all the time may need some supplements to help regulate blood sugar.

The veggies and carbs will be easier digested cooked. You might try slowly adding small amounts of rice or another easily digested carb to your diet. Cook your grains very well for digestion.

Millet.. is a good choice for a grain. After it is cooked add a bit of Ghee to it.

Do you eat anything besides meat and meat fat?

Ghee would be helpful for healing the gut.  

How do you know your blood type?   I would be absolutely certain that you are Type O blood type.  Many people, even long timers, have been following the wrong diet until they got confirmation.

I was going to suggest the same thing.  Grains should help with weight gain, if you can find a non-irritating one, and then add plenty of ghee.

For now get the vegetables and fruit in you.  Lucky for you that you're an O and you can handle the high protein, low carb better than us A's.  My son who is O+, gets sick if he doesn't get fresh fruit regularly.. Ricotta is on the Gatherer list if you are that genotype?? You can make a really good ice cream like thing with it.. I would also recommend carob powder it feeds those good bacteria. I'll bet those bacteria are as hungry as you are.

I presume that you are aware that eating sashimi carries risks of more severe reactions than what most people experience from eating wheat or msg.

These risks come bacteria, parasites, and toxins. Exposures to these can result in death or body problems that persist for years.

You did not state what fish you ate:

Scombrotoxic food poisoning causes heart palpitations(from tuna, mackerel, bonito, or skipjack).

Ciguatera food poisoning from groupers, barracudas, snappers, and mackerel can result in heart palpitations

Saxitoxin food poisoning from shellfish can cause heart palpitations.

horseshoe crab food poisoning causes heart palpitations

The most  well known danger from sashami is from tetrodotoxin, a potent neurotoxin. It come from eating contaminated fugo fish, puffer fish, parrotfish, blue-ringed octopus, starfish, or angelfish. If the dose was small a person may experience heart palpitations instead of death.

Raw salmon can contain round worm larvae

Ray oysters can carry the norovirus

Squid and cuttlefish often have bacterial contamination

You could contact the health department and the restaurant.  I would ask the restaurant if they use flash frozen seafood and if they use some or all fresh.  If they use some fresh, then depending on conditions that could contaminate the food you had.  

Consumer Reports found that most restaurants use flash frozen seafood and of the few samples that contained parasites, all of them were dead.  

I wonder if dead parasites are still a problem?  I know that dead bacteria in probiotics can still have a beneficial quality.

A dead parasite should not be able to infect you. But if the parasite releases a toxin, that toxin would still be present in the fish.

I think heart palpitations would be more likely to be caused by the toxins than by infection. I do not know this.


Elsewhere on the forums it has been pointed out that flash frozen fish results in an undesirable elevation of polyamine levels.

Wasn't there a thread a while back about fish being deliberately mis-named?  Some fish are worse than others to eat raw.  And if you thought you were eating one type but were actually eating something that shouldn't be eaten raw......well, then.  

If the establishment you're eating in smells the slightest bit fishy, it's not fresh.  Fresh fish doesn't smell.

my best buy by far has been a crock pot!

there s something about bone and meat broth soup that trumps all being said about how healthy eating raw is!!

Hey Actualize,
Don't forget the very important veges.  We need to have that w/ every meal.  Try sweet potatoes for some carbs.  I have the same problem, am trying to gain some of my lost weight back.  I need to always remind myself to go easy....heal first.  I do not follow the portion sizes, I eat more.  I do not eat snacks very often but when I do it's a beneficial fruit.

I agree with Lloyd's post that cooked grains and vegetables may be easier to digest.  Cooking makes food more yang, which is strengthening, warming and concentrating.  Raw foods are yin, cooling, dispersing and are not particularly successful at increasing weight.

I think getting your secretor status checked is a useful first step; a simple saliva test mailed to the Blood Type store.

A little bit of well cooked beneficial grains can make a lot of difference.  I don't think you sound like a gatherer unless your normal weight tends toward the heavy side.  Depending on your genotype, grains like millet and quinoa might be more useful for you than rice.

I always use more water than recipes call for, and cook the grains with a tight-fitting lid for longer than the recipe says.

Grains also need to be rinsed well under cold running water prior to cooking.  And stirring in a dry skillet over low heat until very lightly toasted will make them easier to digest.

Darn!  I love sashimi!

Well, risks are based on probability.  Where I eat, the density of lawyers (and folks that can afford them) is high, so I suspect the fish quality is very high and the probability of complications is low.


My SWAMI diet is a blend of BTD and GTD Explorer, but I'm not totally compliant.  Also I try to choose foods that have a Low Glycemic index.  DW and DD are A+, probably also Explorer.
