Quoted from Chloe
..I tried the Shirikati noodles which come from some kind of yam...and the liquid in them smelled really funky if not washed off completely...

Konnyaku, Devils Tongue Lily {Amorphophallus konjac - Araceae}

Its got nothing to do with a Yam - This has come up before. Lets just say the asian word for it doesn't readily translate to Engrish.
Additionally, the Sweet Potato noodles typically have some of this Glucomannan added to it, even if its not listed on the ingredients, if bought at the asian market.

There are 2 kinds from the asina market of Shirataki noodles - THe all white ones & some are brownish with specks of seaweed.
Not too into the white ones. If you ever get to Japan or Korea you would soon learn the glories of the noodles over other ways that it is served.
As stated not very filling - They are more commonly eaten in summer. Sometimes with a splash of vinegar.
