Has anyone ever heard of OD'ing on raw beet juice?

I have enjoyed raw beet juice many many times but the last time I drank it, it gave me a scare. Took me awhile to discover that it was the beets. The other ingredients in the drink were apples, carrots, wheatgrass and ginger. At first I thought it was the ginger because of its spiciness. The reaction I experienced was a constricted and hoarse throat. It was also instant and severe and happened before I even finished my drink. By the end of the day, my hoarseness had gone and I was left with a soreness in the top of my neck. So anyway, I thought I had OD'd on spice. But after a few hours of research on the internet that night, I found a lot of chatter about raw beet juice. It seems that my reaction is a common one. And it seems that the amount of it in the drink was the problem.

The aftermath of this incident is that I now have a chronic soreness at the top of my neck. In the past months I have spoken to two different ND's about it but neither have heard of it before. One of them suggested that I take a homeopathic remedy for my #2 Chakra but I am positive that it is not an "energetic field" problem.

Beets are one of the "beneficials" in my BTD and I love fresh made juice with raw beets in it. Even purchased a top notch juicer to make these drinks myself. Would love to go back to drinking them, maybe not on a daily basis, but at least once or twice per week.

Correction...pain is at the bottom of my neck, not the top.

I thought it was important to clarify this just now because I was just reading another thread about citrus being connected to shoulder and neck pain. There was no citrus involved with this reaction.

Hi Teri,
How much beet juice did you consume?
I drink it daily as part of all my other freshly juiced veggies, and I enjoy it very much.  However, I have noticed a few times if I got carried away and used too much beet, the back of my throat would have a strange "raw" feeling for a few hours.
For 1 pint of mixed vegetable juice, I will add maybe 1/2 a small beet, or 1/4 large one.

I have read that beet juice is good - but should not be consumed in large portions  and I have to agree:
I tried once to drink a large glass with pure beetjuice and I felt really sick after it
- I got white as a sheet , my pulse dropped - and I started to sweat like crazy- since then I always use it mixed with other veggies so

I usually use a whole small beet or half a large one. Sounds like that is the problem. Will cut down on quantity and try it again. It's been months since I had any. Sorry to hear about your reaction, Henriette Bsec, sounds nasty. But it is good to know that it is dangerous in large quantities. If anyone out there is not aware, be careful!

Curious, we are all B's on this thread so far. I wonder if the reaction would be the same in other blood groups?

I've never used raw beets...

I eat canned beets regularly; sometimes a whole 15 oz. can of whole or sliced beets and the juice.  It is very good for the gall bladder.  I have never had any soreness in the throat or neck from the cooked.

It is interesting that there must be an enzyme in the raw beets that causes the problem.

Yeah, I've also heard of ODing on too much raw beet juice.  It is extremely cleansing, and thus can lead to some very uncomfortable purging from various bodily orifices!

I've had a sore throat from raw beet greens. They get cooked now.

Almost sounds like an oxalic acid type of experience.

*chuckle* Yup, I don't do that anymore either.
Now I ferment my beets & just have a little at a time.  I use Polyflora O to make "beet kvass", and I bet the B Polylfora would be just as tasty.  You just chop 2-3 beets into cubes, and place in the bottom of a clean half gallon jar.  Warm a half cup or so of water with 1 teaspoon sugar & open up 2 caps of Polyflora into the sugar water.  Let sit for 20 min. or so for the bacteria to "wake up".  Add to the beets and continue filling the jar with warm water.  I let mine sit on the counter for 3 days before refrigerating.  I have a couple of oz. with a meal.  Very tasty & gives me some fizzies for my tummy.

I know that beets are a source of betaine hydrochloride acid but I read that you can't get a therapeutic amount of it just from eating beets.

But yet I have had throat and stomach sensitivity in varying degrees when I ate raw beets.  So maybe those of us with a sensitive G.I. tract might have to be careful with them.

I'm using marshmallow root at each meal as I work on healing mine.  It is definitely helping.

Beet Juice is one of the few veggie juices that should be introduced very gradually - Otherwise you'll get the "Cleansing" reaction.

Years ago when I first tried live juices at home  Iread of the bennies of Beet juice, but not the warning. Also it was the first time I had really ever had Beets in my life.

I drank 4 whole large Beets & their Tops....Thought I was back on the 60's for 2 hours & to see the resultant redness from both ends has one get really worried when the falmily practitioner is against veganism anyway...

Beets r very powerful and should NOT be eaten more than twice weekly ... they're also VERY cleansing and excellent for the liver; however, they become weakening if you overdose on them ...  sigh ...

This also happened to me as well as bringing it straight back up!  And this happened even before I finished drinking the glass.  Ended up feeling sick and tired all day long

At the time I thought that it was because I didn't peel them  first

So beets should really come with a warning :
Yes they are bennies - but dont drink a huge glass of fresh juice or you

I don't know about not using them regularly.  I use a little everyday in my juice and it keeps the liver and bowels performing regularly.

But more is not better.  A modest amount seems to be essential.

Sound right Victoria
- from late august to early spring I eat them quite often ( read 4-5 servings pr week)- but never in huge servings
What I have noticed is that while the raw juice can give be the above mentioned reactions
- baked or cooked I just seem to get loose bm and pink urine.
Last week I ate beets almost everyday in some or other form and I felt fine.

Yes. Yes. Moderation in all things.
Trying anything new in large doses is never wise.
Western thinking goes with "if a little is good - then a whole lot must be goodest..."

Thanks all for the information, I would never have known.  I, too, have a juicer and use it on occasion.  I usually put a whole beet in, and haven't noticed anything, but then I wasn't looking.  From now on it will be a half!!

I use beet juice in combination with carrot, apple, celery, ginger.  No problem here and I drink a couple of pints of the mixture in a days time.
