Oh my goodness.  My nose is so stopped up from eating Chinese food.  It was chicken and broccoli, but I bet the clear sauce was corn starch.  What do you think?

Yup. Cornstarch for sure, plus some wheat as well (soy sauce). I ate Chinese quite a bit before the diet and then for about 8 weeks into the diet gradually weaning off. It got to where I would drain as much sauce as possible off the food!

Just for starters, use arrowroot instead of cornstarch. Arrowroot is used in China. Cornflour is simply the western preference because of the ignorance about arrowroot. Arrowroot is also used in Indian cuisine.

Holy snap.. going to a chinese buffett is my absolute favorite way of letting my hair down on the diet!  lol  I kill for some of the stuff you can pile on your plate.. sesame chicken, fried shrimp, the works.  I feel it BAD the next day, but when I do sin, it's all about the Chinese cuisine

I have to say they it was store-bought Chinese food from my husband's favorite restaurant.  I will have to look over the menu more carefully.

I wonder what is the "safe-est" food to order when you Have to go out?

Deflect will aid you in reducing the effects of avoids. In my opinion it is not as good an idea to start eating avoids and using a "magic pill". Deflect is great for use on those occasions when the avoids are unavoidable or for a rare treat.

Everyone has to follow their own level of compliance. Relying on Deflect on a regular basis for the purpose of planned eating of avoids is something I would not personally do.

well, we tried PF Changs, a very nice chain, and it was delicious, but you can be sure the meats were dipped in cornstarch or flour......toooooo baaaaad. They had the most gorgeous spinach and garlic dish...but who knows what was in it?

I take an enzyme with my meal ... afterwards drink hot teas (usually peppermint and/or lemon water) and/or kefir ... I also try to ONLY eat beneficials the following day  ...

Now that is practical advice.  Only I don't get kefir.  I admit it is hard to eat this way in a perfect fashion, but I try my best.

The last time I ate at a Chinese Buffet was over a year ago.  The food was delicious and even though I tried to pick things that I figured were as compliant as can be they affected me greatly.   I had taken a deflect before the meal and after the meal and one before bed.  I woke up in the middle of the night and my whole body was so itchy.    My head and my tummy suffer the most.   I ended up taking two more deflect and having a warm shower and scratched the heck out of my head (felt so good, but so bad).   The next day I felt abit better although my head and tummy felt the soreness from scratching.  More deflect, eating totally beneficials and exercising for the next couple of days afterwards and I was like new again.  This past spring my hubby suggested going to a chinese buffet again.   I said only if I could order off of the menu.   We ended up going to a steakhouse instead.    (He had chicken)

meribelle...I find the safest foods to order when eating out are the salads (you can usually ask for the things you want in it...like substituting romaine lettuce...they have it on hand if they serve caesar salads... instead of head lettuce  , but head lettuce is better than not having any lettuce ).  I carry olive oil and lemon juice when I know I am going to be eating out although alot of places do have the stuff.  At least, I know mine is compliant and does not have any other oils mixed in it.  And... to stick with your basic beef cuts like steak, roast or liver.   I ask what kind of spices they have and ask for no pepper unless it is freshly ground.   Be careful of the sauces that may accompany any foods.  Alot of the restaurants have their meats already marinating in ready made sauces when it arrives at their business for quicker meals.  

And...yes...the use of deflect is a very good idea, but not as a fix all remedy to eat avoids.  It can only do so much for you.  You have to do the rest.

As for the best foods to eat at a Chinese restaurant, that's problematic. Just about everything will have cornstarch, soy sauce, wheat, HFCS and/or some other O avoid in it. Try to stay away from anything coated with a lot of sauce, deep-fried or breaded and go for simple dishes--sauteed vegetables, meat or fish cooked by itself by itself or with veggies (salmon poached in wine, crab legs, chicken breast are good examples), plain rice or rice noodles. Take plenty of Deflect right after eating, but be prepared to feel some consequences the next day. If you keep this to an occasional visit however, you shouldn't have too many problems.

The last couple times I ate Chinese, I kept a soup bowl full of water at the table to 'wash' the food with, much like a raccoon.    That was more than 18 months ago.    

Possibilities are to ask for 'no sauce' or 'minimal sauce'. Avoid deep fried foods and soups. Ummm..... must be why I stopped going.......

I"ve simply given up.  Haven't eaten out in at least 2 years.  Of course, living 50 miles from the nearest food joint of any kind makes it a lot easier!    Now it costs as much to get there as it would be for the meal!
When we do go to town, it's an all day event & I pack all my food.  (And some for my A's, but they can handle avoids a whole lot easierthan I can, if necessary.) A real pain, but it keeps me from a crash-and-burn the next day.

last time I went to a Chinese 'lestaulant', all I could eat was the lettuce with onions and tomatoes.
there were lemon wedges and olive oil was available, TG!!!

I asked the waitress if they could 'stilfly' some 'stlips' of beef with absolutely no soysauce or any other sauce and add some raw spinach or kale to that.........
what she brought to the table were these strips of boiled beef.........totally disgusting!!!!

We rarely eat out, actually, so I guess it is a moot point, but since my husband has had leukemia he has been wanting Chinese food.  I hate to be a stick in the mud, so I have been going along.  We usually eat at home, too.

If I go out to a Chinese buffet or restaurant now, I stick with something like crab legs, unbreaded fish and plain rice or rice noodles, with steamed vegetables if they are available. Those foods seem to give me the least amount of trouble.

You are in a unique position at the moment, Meribelle. If you want to continue to accompany your husband, I would suggest investing in some Deflect or NAG and taking plenty of it after the meal. That way you can be with him and not do too much damage to yourself. You also might want to suggest a compromise--alternate the Chinese restaurant with one you'd like to go to. Just a thought

Yup it sure does, if you like crab. I take it you don't Lloyd.  Usually I get some crab or salmon, sauteed garlic green beans or broccoli, Happy Family (bean thread noodles with sauteed veggies) or plain rice and that's a pretty decent meal.  It takes some experimenting though to find the things your local restaurant makes that aren't drenched in avoids.
