Hello! First timer here! I have a question about what makes certain olives neutral and what makes them avoids. I am an O. I have looked thru all the books I have, but could not find where olives were specifically addressed. If you could guide me to where on this website I could find out, I would appreciate it! Thanks and good health to all of you! Anne |

I actually did find some information in the type4database...but I am confused about this - AVOID: Contains component which can modify known disease susceptibility. What does this mean? thanks |

arose23...welcome to the forum and the BTD way of life. Olives...are okay for secretors if they are not pickled in vinegar.

Contains component which can modify known disease susceptability.
It means that anything that ails you it will bring it on more. Debra P.S. Since you do not have your secretor status...it would be a good thing to get tested. Do you have the Live Right 4 Your Type book...red one? |

arose23, wishing you a warm welcome to BTD and the forums!! Hope you're a secretor so you can have some of your olives anyway. Unless it's changed, black olives are avoids for everyone. |

Thanks Debra and Italybound! Not sure if I am a secretor yet. But I love, love, love Olives, especially Kalamata! I do make sure they are in Olive oil, so that is good! Not a black olive fan but my mom is who is also an O. Debra - thanks for the clarification. Makes sense now! I do have all the books. Just got the red one last week. Went shopping this week to Whole Foods with my pocket size O book. Very helpful. I will get tested one day, so I know for sure. I hope its a secretor! |

Where did you get that information?
In typebase olives are listed as neutral and can be in olive oil or vinegar. Since vinegar is an avoid for O's...did I assume wrong? Debra P.S. arose23...I used to love eating olives also...I think it was for their saltiness though. |

Not all olives are listed as type O secretor neutral. Black olives are an avoid for everyone.
Other olives are type O secretor neutral and non-secretor avoid.
So I guess I am questioning your seemingly blanket statement that all olives are neutral, if they are not pickled in vinegar. |

I grow olives and am rather allergic to them but I am not seemingly allergic to olive oil!
I just pressed a few Kg of olives and the oil is delicious.
Our oil tested out as very high quality extra virgin but is too marginal to guarantee regular commercial cropping.
Besides that if we get a good crop the birds clean them out over night.
All olives are the same, green or black is just their stages of ripeness!
Sorry, back to the thread topic. Cheers John. |

1> Olive Oil will react differntly in some people from 'Olives', simply because EVO is from the fresh Olives unlike storebought Olives.
2> Green Olives are made from fermented Olives - Unlike American Black Olives which have not been fermented.
Both types involve brining/preserving which typically includes some Lye {Sodium Hydroxide, NaOH, liquid runoff from Wood Ashes of a hardwood}, besides the Salt, in the American olive at any rate.
As for the prepared olives in other parts of the world, there are as many numerous ways of preserving them - Much akin to the differences in 'cheeses' being made from milk... |

Thank you everyone for your answers! However.... I can see how us newbies get confused so easily. . In my pocket guide for Blood Type O, it mentions that molds in domestic and Shitake mushrooms as well as fermented olives, tend to trigger allergic reactions in Type O's. But Black olives (which was mentioned is not fermented), is an avoid, and green olives are neutral. In the large book I could not find any reasons given about Olives in general, thus I brought the question to the panel. Now I did find it in the smaller book, which does give me an explanantion, yet why are they neutral. Aargh! I love Olives and do not seem to have any reactions as far as I know....and they are such itty bitty things... I will eat them. I do appreciate all the advice and information. Great Health to all! |

I will add that in all the Health Library books green olives get downgraded to neutral infrequently for type O. |

Quoted Text
The effect of olives upon your digestion is quite different from the effect of olive oil. I suggest going to TYPEbase 3 and entering the search term "olive." You'll come up with a number of links for further information, on lectins, allergenic potential, etc. Olives do contain olive oil, but there is lectin activity, as well as other active compounds, in the flesh of the olive, hence its varying status for the ABO types vs. that of olive oil.
So just promise me you won't overdo 'em, ok?

Hero poli Ana Yes, it's good to be an O around Mediterranean I wouldn't be surprised if green olives comes up as beneficial for you. Actually the green olives are fermented in brine, no other additives, in Turkey and Greece anyway. I wonder if one can find olives in the US, then you could prepare your own green olives (I could send you the details on how) Cheers, Yaman |

Its nice to meet you as well, Yaman! I am afraid my dad did not hang around long enough for me to learn Greek, but I love and embrace my culture anyway. I hope to visit one day soon! I am not aware of anyplace to get fresh olives. It would be so cool though to make my own. I will have to research this more, and would love the recipe! This is such a great place to hang out, everyone is so nice and helpful! |
