i love sweet potatos. in fact, im cooking one right now  

but i was wondering...any advice on what to eeat it with? obviously not meat. i'm getting ready to go to bed, so take that into account. is it ok to eat it with a lot of butter or no? is it ok to eat it a lot with spices? specifically turmeric? What do people think about microwaving potatos...and last of all, i got this sweet potato about 3 weeks ago and this purple stuff started growing all over it, it looked like from another planet. my friend told me i shouldnt eat something like that, but i dont know.

I havnt tried turmeric and sweet potato together but them both being orange makes it sound so good.  

sorry if this doesnt quite fit as a post, but i felt like i wanted to talk about sweet pototaoes.  . they are delicisou!

Usually plain or with other veggies. Check out the recent carob thread where I posted a carob - sweet potato thing. I usually wind up having some kind of protein (meat or fish) since I only eat a couple times a day, hard not to mix starch and protein at at leat one meal.

Purple stuff?  As in mold or as in sprouts coming out of it?  Either way it is probably too old to eat.  I like to eat mine with ghee or olive oil.   I don't eat anything out of the microwave though.  Steamed or baked or french fried (in grapeseed oil) sweet potatoes.

I had a sweet potato grow purple...  It was moldy...  I wouldn't eat it.

I do enjoy sweet potatoes.  I have eaten them baked, topped with ghee and cooked with other vegetables in a soup or vegetable stew.  I have also had them as a fruity dish made with apples and pineapple.  There are many different spicing combinations, as well.

Purple stuff on a sweet potato is probably a mold of some kind. It's definitely too old to eat when it's got little civilizations on it, worshipping you as the All-Seeing Eye of the Universe.

I like my taters savory, probably because of all the nasty sickeningly sweet candied 'yams' we got served at Thanksgiving dinners. Try serving them with ghee or olive oil, cumin, garlic, and grilled onions. If you want a kick of heat, some hot sauce or cayenne is nice too. I like to bake mine stacked in a slow cooker, about 4-5 hours on the LOW setting. Great with sauteed greens!

Hey Ben,
That's a great post!  And I am a great sweet potato lover also.  I have one nearly every day, and it's always my evening meal.  Like Lloyd, I eat it with protein.  There are some foods that I need to be careful about food combining, but for me, sweet potatoes go wonderfully with baked wild salmon, halibut, cod or canned sardines or tuna.  Probably any fish would work, but those are my favorites.  I don't ever eat them with red meat or grains.

My favorite way to prepare them is baked whole in their skins.  And I like the traditional sweet potato best of all.  They have light tan skins and yellow insides.  Very creamy texture and sweet.  I'm not a fan of the garnet.  It is often stringy and the texture is a bit "wet" for my tastes.

I think if you like savory tastes, tumeric would go well with sweet potatoes.  But then, I love tumeric with just about everything.

I don't ever microwave.  Ugh!  Frankenfood!

Care to share your sweet potato salad recipe, what do you put in it besides cooked cubed sweet potatoes and home made mayo.  I use to make potato salad with white potatoes, but don't know if the same veggies (celery, radishes, minced dill pickle, mustard ) would go well in it ( know dill pickle is an avoid, so would eliminate it for sure) and would probably use tumeric instead of mustard, and pepper corn and sea salt instead of salt and pepper of long ago.  Any other tried sweet potato salad? want to share?

I don't dare make sweet potato salad...  My wife(A) already thinks I eat sweet potatoes to torture her...  She has always loved them, but they are avoid for As...  I used to dislike sweet potatoes, but I think it was the corn syrup in the canned version or the marshmallows that were always put on top...

I absolutely love Sweet Potatoes !!!
I usually eat it with molasses and nutmeg and some walnuts or a couple tablespoons of Almond butter and/or plain yogurt !!!

last night my son and his daughter (the adorable granddaughter) an his girlfriend came over for dinner and we had some sauvignon blanc first mostly because the weather was summery...later, a zin, and I made a crossrib roast on the barbecue (in a roasting pan) and put some small sweet potatoes up on a shelf in the barbecue.....which I served with a big salad and brown rice. Everyone was looking around for more sweet potatoes....they came out so soft and almost caramelized.... well, it was a great meal.

I have one mashed with water for breakfast most days.
I often have sweet potato chips too - with chilli, oregano, cumin, ground corriander and olive oil on top - yum
Also sweet potato as a desert - mashed with a sprinkle of brown sugar and walnuts

Yeah Sweet Potatoes...

I dearly love them.  When I was a kid out in the country, everyone grew a sweet potato patch.
As I became older, I noticed that I had gas after eating them.  Upon discovering BTD...it was all explained.
Now I only have some at Thanksgiving and pay the price.  I am so envious on this score.

When I was a little girl and wanted a snack, my mother would often bake a sweet potato in the skin, and when it was done, she would cut off the tip, poke a hole in the end and stuff in some butter.  I would take it out to play with me and eat it on the go.  It was like eating an ice cream sundae as far as I was concerned!

Victoria...we had a fireplace and would put them on the grate or sometimes in the ashes...just cut them open and put in some churned butter...I loved the skins best of all...makes my mouth water just thinking about it.

New Hampshire Gal...I grew up deep in Southern part of Illinois.  I am talking about time way before victory gardens.  We grew what we ate or else...but yes I remember victory gardens as I was a teenager by then.  That was WW11, and I was jitterbugging and swooning over Sinatra.

There are alot of great suggestions and ideas in this thread, everyone.

From my recollection of eating sweet potatoes long ago, I probably ate them as both a savory and a sweet food item.

Spices, ghee/butter, compliant dairy could be added to make a nice sidedish.

Agave syryp, maple syrup, vegetable glycerine, blackstrap molasses, or any compliant sweetener could be added to add a sweet touch.

They are very versatile as they can be steamed, grilled, baked, water sauteed over the stovetop, boiled in a broth/liquid.

And yes...tumeric would be great on sweet potatoes.  I enjoy the beautiful color and the unique, astringent flavor tumeric offers to foods.

I love sweet potatoes, but they don't love me. Pre-BTD, my favorite way to eat them was with a little lime juice. The sweet from the potato contrasts nicely with the sour from the lime.
