I just bought some Goji berries from WF the other day. I read up on them alittle and it was very interesting. They come from areas in the Tibetan and Mongolian Himalayas.
The berries are not touched by hand, but instead collected by shaking the vines, as touching them causes them to lose some of their nutritional potency.
The taste was described as between a cranberry and cherry or a raspberry and plum. IMO its the latter.
The Nutritional Properties are listed as:
19 amino acids, 6x more than bee pollen 21 trace minerals, including Germanium 6 essential fatty acids Vitamins Bl,B2,B6,C,E More beta carotene than carrots more antioxidant power than any other known food source (that's quite a claim) 500x more Vit C than oranges 4 unique polysachharides found in no more food source Linoleic acid, which significantly promotes body fat loss (I'd eat them just for that) 15x more nutritional iron than spinach
Well, maybe a handful a day will be the effects of aging away.......

I have a LOT of the dried berries. I knew about the antioxidant claim, but appreciate the rest of the info. I try and have a handful every couple of days.

Hi Joy! Great these goji berries!! Today I will visit my supplier of my superduper healthy foods!!! I already bought his Chlorella powder (South-Korea) and Acerolapowder (Brazil) en today I am going to get some Gojiberries (Himalaya) and Spirulina as well.. For the all these supps the prices he asks are so wonderfully low!! I can now provide all my patients and friends with superduper chlorella at a quarter of the price the manufacturers ask for.. I am now for 4 weeks on chlorella and I am losing weight My patients are reacting wonderfully on esp. the Chlorella powder!! It really has effect.. Intestines are thoroughly cleansed... Even better than a coloncleanse.. So glad I ran into these superfoods!! Cocky |

Cocky,
You and your patients are definitely benefiting from the supplier. Who can ask for more than good healthy supplements and food and low prices! That's an unbeatable combination.
I've only taken the Goji berries for about three days (they are expensive at WF but I believe worth it). Next I'm looking into buying off the internet.
Could you elaborate a little more on the Chorella powder? Is it just pure powder or mixed with other ingredients. If I can lose weight and clean my intestines I would certainly like to give that a try. Thanks for that info.
I'm going to continue with the Goji berries as I believe they have properties that are super beneficial!!!!!
Accidental_Chef,
As Cocky said I don't see why these berries wouldn't be good for all blood types!!!

I could not tolerate the gogi berries, they made me feel as like I had coffee stomach....very hyper and acidic. This happened off of very small quantities, 3-10 berries. May just be my overly sensitive system but wanted to put it out there. |

Of course, with any food source you have to listen to the reaction your getting from your body. Maybe they are not good for your system and you were right to immediately stop using them.
So far, there is quite a bit of evidence that they are beneficial.
So, as always, caution is warranted.

The taste was described between a cranberry and cherry or a raspberry and plum. I thought is was the latter.
It is a bland like of taste, Funkmuse, and maybe you did get a stale batch. The information was that it seems these are delicate in that they are not handpicked say as an apple but shook off the vines because the more they are handled the less nutritious they are.
I have read about these on other health news forums and it would be worth it IMHO to research more and maybe find a certified organic distributor to ensure freshness.
The ones I got from WF had flavor and tasted fresh.
I feel they have enough beneficial nutritious value to continue eating them.
It always pays to do research. I don't just read one item and then go out and get something.
If these are not right for you there are other highly nutritional foods available as we all know becasue of the BTD!!!!!!!

I believe they can be considered neutral, since the berries are not rated. Chlorella is a great detoxifier for the body. I love using this greens superfood; it's very cleansing and energizing. Alia |

The ones that I have are organic, and they are dried as I said. To me they taste more like tea leaves than any sort of berry, they are not at all sweet.
I've never had fresh ones, but if I ever see them I will try them...very curious to know how they would taste fresh. |

try to constitute them soaked in tea, or water........they might taste better that way.......you can even sweeten them added to a smoothie.......try different alternatives. |

Don't get me wrong, I like the way they taste dried. I was just saying that if someone were expecting a sweet, berry favour...they might think their berries were a little 'off'. I love having a dried fruit that is not so sweet...great in a mix with other dried stuff and nuts. Also great on top of hot foods, like amaranth etc. |

The goji berries taste like nothing I tasted before.. I took them dried with some other dried fruits, some figs, apricots, peanuts, walnuts and a piece of chocolate crumbled in it.. This mixtrail tastes awesome. I will soak some gojiberries today and see what soaking does flavourlike. I like the taste of these berries.. I will use them as an ingredient in my speltmuffins... and mix them with my soyyoghurt and add some acerolapowder as well.. Cocky |

Laura, we have them in our HFStores here, I am in BC. At my store, they are in the 'tiny amount' bulk section as opposed to the big bins....more with the herbs and spices and teas. I've also seen the juice. I got mine from a wholesaler, they allow the public to order once a year and sell tons of dried fruit/nuts/etc to the stores. Big min order but not hard to spend to get a year's worth of stuff, if you have the place to store it. Let me know if you can't find any, I can send you some. |

Soaking the dried goji berries in pineapple juice overnight should plumpen and sweeten them without added sweeteners. Alia |

Perhaps try buying them in an Asian supermarket; I would imagine the Chinatown in Toronto would carry them in one of the stores or apothecaries. Alia |
