Oh my gosh.  Something has made me soooo sick today.  Last night, I ate several figs and many pumpkin seeds before bedtime.  I knew I had eaten too much, way too much, but I was talking to my hubby and just didn't notice or care at the time.  I couldn't sleep well last night either, at all.  This a.m, I awoke with horrible pain in my stomach, really bad, breathtaking pain, and I had some diarrhea as well.  Felt like I was going to vomit too.  I got to feeling better after I drank my morning smoothie, then after lunch, which I had some pumpkin seeds on my salad with sardines and lemon juice/olive oil combo, about couple of hours later, I am hurting extremely bad again, feeling like nausea chills, diarrhea, and very bad stomach pain, not down low in my tummy, but higher up, like in my stomach area.  Oh my gosh, I don't know.  I also took some Catchol both days, which I haven't really been taking consistently, so I don't know what it could be.

I haven't had anything else differently, except I started the fresh lemon juice on my salads a few days ago too, but haven't really noticed any problems with that.  The only thing I can think of is that this time, I only soaked some pumpkin seeds in some water with no sea salt like I previously always do.  I dehydrated them, but seems like last night, I noted a funny taste while eating them, but I just sortof disregarded it.  Today, I couldn't really taste them for the dressing.

Could something have gone wrong with the pumpkin seeds?  I buy them raw, shelled in a 5 lb. bulk package.  I had just opened a new bag with this first set of seeds this time.

Please help.  I don't know what to do.  I have had really bad gas as well today.

Do you have any licorice root in the house?  Or Fucus?

Did you happen to drink any water/liquids with this late night snack?

pumpkin seeds are used to rid your gut, from worms and stuff, down here......
you might have had too many, and they might be doing their job, pretty efficiently.

the only time pumpkin seeds gave me that problem was once that I ate a handful of them right out of a pumpkin I had just oven roasted.......they were so delicious!
couldn t sleep all night, had to stay in the bathroom and felt I was practically turning inside out!!!

but hulled store bought pumpkin seeds don t give me that problem........I like to roast them a bit, though, on a skillet, till they pop......don t like them raw, as much.

Well, I am back for now to the land of the living.  I had to call my husband at work, because I was so scared from such bad stomach pain.  I didn't have lots of diarrhea, and not explosive type (sorry for the graphics), but I felt so nauseated, and I finally threw up.  After I vomited, the pain subsided in my stomach.  I am now very lethargic and still getting chills on my body periodically.  The excruciating pain in my stomach has diminished now, but I still feel very yucky.

My husband came home and is now fixing the boys dinner.  I truly believe that the pumpkin seeds I got are rancid.  I read on the net just now that they can go rancid very easily if not refrigerated.  These came from a co-op warehouse that I order from, 5lb bag, and they are not refrigerated, nor did I refrigerate them when I got them one month ago.  I didn't know.  Anyway, once I got some bad flax oil and a similar thing happened to me.  It was awful, so I never use flax oil anymore.

I read that if the seeds have turned brown, they are rancid.  I looked at my bag, and many of them inside are brownish, but not all.  Hopefully, I can get my money back on this, and I hope to have enough courage to continue using them after this.  I really do like them, but this was just awful...

Thanks for all you guys help.  I was scared, but somehow my body just knew that it was poisoned, and my mind knew it too.  We smelled the seeds, and they have a musty smell.  Thank you God I am okay...

P.S.  My hubby is rejoicing he is a compliant B right now, with pumpkin seeds off limits!  He watched me eat a handful last night and said, "Those aren't good for my type."  Now he is doubly glad he didn't.  My boys didn't eat any of this batch either, praise the Lord.

Glad you're feeling better...

It might be helpful if one buys large quantites of pumpkin seeds or any other type of nuts/seeds to keep them in the refrigerator or freezer, so they stay fresh and do not turn rancid quickly.

I will definitely do that now that I know, but wonder how long they sat in the warehouse prior?  I've only had them about 1 month in my pantry here.  But, I guess that could be long enough for them to go rancid, although I don't think I have had that happen before.  Could have and just didn't attribute it to that maybe.

How many pumpkin seeds did you eat?  Keep small quantities so you don't overeat them when you are hungry!  They do down easy, but whew!  Watch out for the backlash...they are a great source of magnesium = diarrhea!

Oh Thank God for that! You had mentioned in another thread about portion control on nuts, so looks like you need to really watch out for the munchies monster creeping up on you...My reaction to excess is heartburn..so that keeps me in check.

I had the same thing happen to me last week when I ate dried figs and walnuts.  Both organic.  I do believe it was the figs that did it to me.  I ate quite a few of both as they are VERY TASTY when eaten together!

BAD BAD Stomach pains and diarrhea... same exact symptoms you  mentioned.  Now I'm a bit weary of eating figs again!  I think they dry all the figs whether they are bad or not and so sometimes one might eat a rotten dried fig.  One of the figs I ate tasted kind of funny. I had put it aside and then as I was reading and reaching for figs without looking, I unknowingly ate that one!  ha..

I love figs and walnuts together, they taste delicious! But yes, if you eat too many you can get some bad stomach pains. It has happened to me in the past, but maybe you are right funky, a bad apple (fig) in the bunch.

Could be, but the only thing was, I didn't have any figs that next afternoon when I got extremely ill, only maybe 20 or so pumpkin seeds on my salad.  I definitely think the seeds were rancid, as I have never had this happen even by eating way more seeds, which I have!

Walnuts and figs have never made me sick, and I have WAY overeaten those too, as they are great together.  But, I am sticking now to only eating a small amount of nuts on my salad with my meals and not between meals.  I am feeling better this way.  It seemed I would get brain-foggy, bloated and a bit lethargic after the walnut/fig/pumpkin seed snacks.  Maybe if I had only had the allotted portion I wouldn't have, but I can't seem to stop eating them, so it's all or nothing for me!  That's just about the way I am on everything!

walnut/fig/pumpkin seed snacks.

Were the figs fresh or dried?  You Type O nonnies are much more sugar sensitive than your secretor cousins, and that could have set up a bit of a fermenting processin your intestines.  Just throwing out ideas here.

Yes, I definitely believe that.  The figs were dried.  That's the only type I have ever had.  I think the mixing of those things causes issues for me.  When I eat the nuts on salad with my meal, I don't get that feeling or the urge to continue eating them.  I ate several before bedtime last night and have had more gas than usual (excuse me  , than I usually do.)

Isn't it nice to come to a forum and hear about everyone's bodily functions, and not worry about it? heehee...

Tina,

Non-secretors are very sensitive to sugar-containing foods, and I wouldn't be surprised if you caused a massive upswell of candida and/or bacterial activity in your gut by eating all those highly-sweet figs and feeding them lots of lovely, lovely sugar for them to rapidly metabolize and give off lots of lovely, lovely waste gases as a by-product of their sugar metabolism... thereby giving you abdominal pains.

If at all possible, Dr. D does suggest somewhere for non-secretors to choose beneficial vegetables or veggie juices over fruits and fruit juices.  I would venture to guess that this rule might even apply to the consumption of beneficial fruits and fruit juices, as non-secretors are forever battling overgrowths of bad gut microbes and any sugar ingestion only makes things worse for them.

If you haven't already done so, you should really read about the specifics of non-secretor physiology:

I think it was the figs, personally.  Figs can really "move" you, if you know what I mean.  They are like prunes in that respect.  Then when you combine them with pumpkin seeds, which are also very high in fiber, you could have a situation on your hands.  However, I think the figs were the main culprit, personally.  That's my theory and I'm sticking to it.
