Meat portions according to D'Adamo's book should be 2-5 ozs per serving, if I remember correctly. But how does one decide whether to have 2, 3, 4 or 5 ozs in each serving. I'm a woman but I am 5'10 and weigh nearly 139 lbs, a lot of muscle, not much fat- so presumably I require as much meat as a small slender man?

try the large portion for starts and work down if necessary.
this is all about individuality and how your body feels....

Experimenting with the porion sizes during your meals might be the best way to determine how much protein fills you up after a meal. For myself, I know that when I eat too much protein in a sitting, I can instinctly feel that I've consumed too much; 2-3 ounces of protein is a nice size portion for myself. Albeit, my blood type is A, and my protein needs differ from that of a blood O individual.
Also consider how much exercise you partake in, how active you are in a single day, and any health challenges you may be facing.

also avoid having starch or grains together with your protein...... that rule helped my swelling issues after eating protein.

I have very little starch or grains these days period. With my meat I usually have leafy greens of some kind and that's it. I'm going to experiment with eating 3 or 4 ozs of meat in one sitting.
We're all different. While I am just slightly taller than you are (and also a woman), I am the size, bone-wise and structure-wise of a man. Although I wear anywhere from a 14-18 (I've lost some weight lately), I weigh well over 200 lbs. You would never know it to look at me. At one point I dieted down to 165 lbs. People wondered if I had cancer or was anorexic. I was nothing but bones.
I can easily eat a 12 oz steak or more.
I am the genetic equivalent of an Amazon, and I eat like one. If I don't eat enough, I am dragged out and miserable. I simply could not get through my day on small portions. I need lots of food and the food must include yummy fats like ghee and the fat on my steaks, or I never get satisfied. For me, it is my strong, muscled, big-framed Russian ancestory that demands that eat enough food. The less that I eat, the harder time I have losing weight. My body immediately goes into "famine" mode and conserves every single micron of food that goes it. If, instead, I feed it well, I can lose weight quite easily.
In general, from my own past observations in restaurants, portions are larger for meat, seafood and grain products and more limited with the vegetables.

It is the starches that do me in and make me fat.
Dang! You're my new hero. I think Amazonian women are so cool. I actually think of myself as Amazonian but at a size 6 I guess I'm not quite in your league. One of my best friends is of Russian background and she has a large frame too and is extremely strong, although she is not as tall as you.

Hmmm. I don't think I ever feel bad after eating as much meat as I want in a sitting, I've never measured it or set goals as to portion size, so maybe I just naturally stop eating when I've had enough? I can lose plenty of weight while eating plenty of red meat.
Most of the women in my family and in-laws are very petite, and I can't believe the small portions they can live with eating...I sometimes feel full after just 2-3 oz., but when I'm hungry and haven't had red meat for a while, I can usually eat as much as 12 oz without problem. At restaurants I substitute vegetables for anything I can.

As can I. And I never thought it would be true after eating no meat for 27 yr. It took me a good year or more to get to this point. I guess my stomach acids, juices, whatever had to build up again.
