Has anyone seen the story recently on the news that reports red wine to help lower cholesterol and help you live longer and healthier. It says you would have to drink gallons a day to reap the benefits. Anyway, I would like to start drinking a glass each night but not sure of a good wine to buy. Any suggestions on good tasting, beneficial, and affordable red wine. Thanks. |

My DH (winebuyer for WF) suggests dancing bull zinfandel or bonny doon big house red, as they are not expensive and a great place to begin enjoying reds...of course there are hundreds more, but there are two. |

I like Little Penguin - especially their Pinot Noir. They also have a good Shiraz and are reasonably priced. I don't know too much about wine, but I've tried a lot of reds under $10 & this is one of the more palatable ones I've come across. Around where I live Little Penguin is usually $6-8 depending on where you shop. Have fun trying new wines too! Since btd, it's become a bit of a hobby... though I'm not good enough to really talk wine, I am starting to learn what I like |

I like Little Penguin, too! I usually get the Cabernet; I'll look for the Pinot Noir. Mad Housewife makes a good Cabernet, as does Happy Camper (can you tell I buy wine for the name?). Both of those are under $6, depending where you shop... |

Red wine for secretors is neutral and for nonnies it is beneficial. I like Yellow Tail from Australia. Have not tried too many different kinds though. Debra |

Jayney, you may enjoy this entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ResveratrolOne part says that a small amount of red wine several times a day may be much more protective over having a large amount once a day. |

'Powers Wines' from Kennewick,Washington is organic {but not certified} which also produces the 'Badger Mountain' label {which is certified Organic, and costs more}.
Their German Red {Lemberger} is good and a reasonable price. Southern Oregon reds from Umpqua River...for that matter any wine from Umpqua.
You can tell the quality of a wine without tasting by 2 ways: 1: Swish it around in the glass - the 'hanging' on the sides tells you how well aged it is. If it doesn't hang it is young or has nasty things in it. Also if it hangs weird {can't really describe this one} it has thickeners.
2: Hold an Orange up to the back of the glass, and look the through the far edge of the wine level at an angle. You should see 2 distinct colour levels on the top, their thickness of level tells you the balance of flavours. The brown is the oakiness, the clear is the acidity {which also includes the chemicals from the hanging}.

I have read some time ago that red wine gets more beneficial when grown close to the Equator.. So my fave red wines come from Chile, South Africa, Australia... The more sun these grapes get, the more beneficial for us 'swallowers' of that gorgeous red liquid... I do not know any details, but the darker the red wine, the more tannins in it, the better!!! Cocky always drinking 2 precious glasses of Aliwen (Chile).. |

Bogel Old Vine Zinfindel! Bogel is a consistent brand and their "old Vine" wines are wonderful. Bless those ancient grapevines! Also Bogel Old Vine Red. |

I like Shiraz and Pinot Noir for everyday use, they are light and friendly, easy going. In the past I used to drink only Cabernet! (there were hardly any varieties for reasonable price around here), it is heavier though, so now I save it for more festive occasions. |

Just to throw a little individuality into the mix. If I drink red wine....which is supposedly beneficial to this b- nonnie....my nose breaks out in ugly red pimples. I have experimented with regions, organics, and whatever.....since I love the taste. But, still the old red nose appears.
Bourbon leaves my nose smooth and shiny.
