I just bought a bunch of it to use as tea. Using all 5 fingers in a clutch, grasp the horsetail in that clutch and place in a teacup, pour boiling water on it and steep. I usually steep about 8 minutes.
If you take internally - it should really only be used in early spring. Either suck the juice, or bring to a boil and use in Miso Soup, etc.
After Spring, the Silica crystallizes and should really be used in compost, Biodynamic Prep #501, or as the "Cowboy Scourbrush".

Don't consume the horsetail after the first new, tender sprouts. Otherwise it is considered a kidney irritant, and useless for anything except scrubbing pots and pans.

does this apply to the capsules as well or just the fresh? i know the answer seems obvious but i ask because someone (can't remember who but seems it's a guy) only uses certain foods/supps at certain seasons.

I've alwaysbeen leery of supplements, especially the Horsetail capsules - you've got no idea how/where/when it was harvested/processed.
One advantage to this one however is that grows virtually everywhere.

I like Jarrow brand Bio-sil. It is biologically available silicon, which is what people take horsetail for anyway.
True, true, as Victoria states above, but be warned!!!! Buy a package of vege capsules right along with your BioSil and squirt your drops into the capsule, close tightly and swallow immediately. This is the nastiest, stinkiest, most foul tasting supplement ever! Reminiscent of rotten fish.

I have another solution for that, LuHu. I drink at least a half dozen pint sized glasses of water everyday. I just put one drop of BioSil into each glass of water. With so much water, I don't even taste it.

Hi There Victoria,
You are at the 'maintenance' dose (6 drops/day). I believe the 'loading' dose is 20 drops(corrected per web info) for 1 month and then go to 6 per day. It would be very hard to dilute the loading dose enough with a normal amount of water per day to make it palatable. Did you ever put BioSil in juice to get it down? I wish I could find that loading vs. maintenance dose info, now. It used to be on the outside of the BioSil box until the DSHEA act, I believe. Then it disappeared.

At that amount, I think I would go for capsules, too, LuHu!!!!!!!!
I never did a loading process, just started in on 6 drops a day, with my calcium/mag. I've been taking it so long, I've probably reached "loading" level by now.

ERRATA!!!
Found this about dosage. I will adjust above so that no one will OD on BioSil!.
"BioSil (Jarrow) Each bottle, 30 ml bioavailable silicon solution (3-month supply). Particularly helpful for maintaining good nails (split nails), bones, joints, hair and skin. Silicon is important for tissue strength and elasticity. A study among calves showed an increase in collagen concentration in skin and cartilage. This was also seen in a test tube study that showed an increase in collagen production in bone cells (osteoblasts) that suggest a potential benefit for bone growth and stability. One study showed considerably greater bioavailability for orthosilicic acid than placebo, horsetail extract or a colloidal gel. This concentrated form contains orthosilicic acid. Suggested use is 6 drops per day for maintenance; 10 drops for concentrated use and 20 drops a day maximum. Place in a 1/4 cup fluid (preferably juice). You may also put the drops in a hard-shell capsule and take immediately with fluid."

Great info, LuHu, thanks! Have you tried just one drop at a time in a big glass of water, yet?
(Be brave. )
No, ma'am. Does it REALLY 'disappear' in that dilution? Your reply will determine whether I 'become' brave or not.

Well, LuHu, let's see how I can reply that will be both honest and optimistic.
This is my Kitchen Glass I'm talking about, and it holds 16 oz of water. I keep it on the counter and every time I'm in there, I drink about 1/2 of it. Every time I refill that glass, I put 1 drop of the BioSil in it. I don't taste it at all. Now, that could be because I am totally used to it. My friend picked up my glass recently to take a sip of water and I said "Be careful. It has some mineral drops in it!" He drank it and said it was delicious water. So, . . . . . LuHu . . . Be Brave!
