Wow, can I just say that, from the perspective of someone who has been without a functional kitchen for eons and now has one, I am rediscovering and "re-appreciating" the importance of a homemade diet?  And I think the homemade factor is very key to BTDing.  You don't have to make it yourself, but it sure is the way to go.  When you cook yourself, you control everything--it is a control freak's dream come true *lol*!  You control the all-important ingredients, most of all!  You know just what is in there and what is NOT in there.  And you can make it replete with BENEFICIALS if you like!

I'm sitting here dining in my cubicle (lol) on a brunch of a leftover lamb chop and broccoli florets that were cooked in Raos marinara sauce.  Magnificent and totally beneficial (except for the neutral Raos).  I guess I'm just gonna be insufferable for a while about how amazing and wonderful it is to be able to do something I used to take for granted:  the simple act of cooking your own meals, preparing your own food.

We are so blessed, most of us on this board, to have access to such a dazzling variety of high quality foods.  We are surrounded by abundance, let's appreciate and take advantage of that!  I highly recommend going out and stocking up on beneficials, celebrate them!  This diet is a joyous thing, feeling good is a joyous thing, health is a joyous thing, cooking is a joyous thing, enjoying delicious, nourishing food is a joyous thing, and for those with families, feeding them nourishing food and helping them flourish is wonderful, too.  So, stock up on those bennies and have a cooking spree, preferrably at least once per week, in your home!  With a range, a fridge, and the all-important Gladware (lol), there is nothing I can't do!

It is so comforting and such a relief (after the summer of no kitchen, but it was even longer with a dysfunctional one) to know that I have a kitchen full of good, beneficial stuff that is going to make me strong and healthy.  Yahooooooo, Mountain Dew (scratch the Mountain Dew, but you get the point!).

I just think that we all tend to take the simple joy and gift of having beautiful kitchens and access to such much good food for granted.  And reallly I find it so much easier to cook myself and eat well than to do the whole "fast food" lifestyle, by which I don't mean that one eats at fast food joints, necessarily, but just the whole thing of NOT eating good, homemade, "slow food".  And to me, what I'm saying in that last little bit there, is that it is a myth that the "fast food" lifestyle is somehow easier or more convenient than the slow food lifestyle.  I find it so much more relaxing and easy to do the homemade thing than to do anything else.  And as far as which is more economical, well, fuggedaboutit, homemade wins hands down.

Let's just all open our eyes and CELEBRATE our kitchens!!!  Many people in the world don't have kitchens or the abundance of food choices we have to put into them, ya know?  We are so blessed and on top of that we know about the BTD, so we know which foods out of the dazzling array of choices are best for us and which to avoid, so all that's left is to celebrate all these blessings by cooking up a storm of beneficials, thanking our maker, and enjoying!

I was in a soc class once that spoke of how there's a subconscious discontent in many people because they are removed from the work they do- many jobs don't have the workers seeing the end results or having the satisfaction of "Creating" something. I think there's a subconscious discontent in people as they don't "prepare" their food. (Throwing a box in the micro does not count as "preparing" food!)

I LOVE cooking, and I totally enjoy a meal that I took the time to prepare, and present beautifully on dishes (Twisty, you may enjoy your meal more if you try it on a plate instead of the gladware- I certainly do. I NEVER eat out of tupperware any more...) and so then I take the time to savour my creation as opposed to wolf it down and be hungry 2 hrs later.

And it is great to never have to worry about what really is in one's food when you prepare it at home. It's easier to enjoy your food and eating when you know it's doing your body good

Serena, what an excellent post!  Yes, I think cooking our own food is so important psychologically and, for families, it is so important to sit down and eat together.  I also think it is important for kids to be allowed and encouraged to participate in the kitchen, in cooking, on so many levels!  It makes them feel included, important, and they can be creative and tactile and learn about their connection to the food that sustains them and on and on and ON, plus it is time for bonding and quality time, etc.  I could go on (and don't we all know it *lol*).  But your post is so right on, cooking is just a very natural, healing, comforting, stress-busting thing.  It's very basic, as most of the most profound things in life are.

Lola, I'm enjoying!  A co-worker walked by a bit ago and said (re the aforementioned lamb and broccoli), "Edna, that smells wonderful!"  Funny, no one ever said that all those months I wasn't eating homemade stuff.

Lol, twist, almost everytime I eat in the staff room, someone at work says something about how wonderful my lunch looks "You always have the prettiest salads" "You put so much thought into your food" and the ever common "OH, that looks SO good!!"  And often it's people eating a michelina's dinner out of the cardboard box it came in. I keep my comments of "Yours could look good too if it wasn't in a box..." to myself

My family ALWAYS sat down at the table when I was younger. Now with us working different hours and all kinds of things going on, it doesn't happen as often, but mom sometimes tries on the weekend

I LOVE your enthusiasm Peppermint! What a joyful attitude!  And what a great reminder to be vigilant about our intake.  I floundered in the BTD WOL for this very reason - not reading labels, and not cooking at home.  But I'm getting it now.  

Making healthy decisions like this isn't always convenient, but it WILL also be rewarded.

I think one of my biggest downfalls lately with being able to stay compliant with the BTD has been just this - I haven't been cooking at home enough lately - I've gotten lazy and we've been eating out quite a bit and my compliance goes out the window unfortunately.  I need to get back to the love of cooking again - but I can't quite figure out how to do that.  I do great when I can cook with someone but that doesn't always happen around my home since my hubby's way of helping is to call for takeout - which I tend to jump at the chance but I need to change my way of thinking about that big time.

Good thread!  Glad that you are enjoying your own food now, Edna!  Missy, I hear ya!  We work from home and go OUT to depressurize -- then timing gets in the road and then we have that pizza!  But, today, I have set specific office hours for myself so that the day actually ends.

This morning, before my 10 am office start time, I made us a nice omelette for breakfast, with Ezekiel toast; put on the butter for ghee and got that done; in the meantime, I made a really nice apple cake which is diminishing in size through this day -- not good to do this, I know.  And did a laundry.

I will be working a little later than I planned -- and we did go out for lunch, but just had Chicken Caesar with no bread, croutons or bacon and the owner gave us extra chicken -- I did not finish it -- too much food.

Tonight, we will have leftover pot roast with a nice squash/onion/garlic recipe that I found on the site -- maybe hubby will make a salad -- like yours, he enourages the use of the phone or the car for meals these days.  We MUST break these dreadful habits -- they are going nowhere positive.

I feel good about the day so far, especially with NO WHEAT -- I've made it through the tough part of the day for that one.  

Setting the office hours for my own work actually frees up better time for me to work in the kitchen so we will definitely be able to eat better!!

there's almost always time to make things- it's just sometimes hard to find it. I think most of us waste more time than we realise. (Sometimes even on here...) There just comes a point where you have to MAKE and TAKE the time to do things. Part of that requires organization, which is always my personal downfall, but at least half the time I get it right

Always worth it though to make a wonderful meal in your own kitchen, with your own groceries

It's so relaxing, too, and such a timesaver.  Again, it is such a myth that "fast food" saves time somehow or is convenient (or cheap).

Not having a working kitchen for so long has thankfully rendered me like someone who lost use of a body part, like a dominant arm for example, for a while and now appreciates all that it does so much more!  We are just so lucky to have nice kitchens and supermarkets filled with GMO food (lol, just kidding on that last bit, MOST of you are near a Whole Foods...but seriously, even in the regular supermarket, we do have an abundance of whole, fresh, chi-laden food if we stick to the outside aisles and pray that they have organic meat or a reasonable facsimile).

Last night I stocked up and I mean really stocked up for the first time in a long, long, LONG time.  First time since having my new stove, and the kitchen almost done (handyman still has to come back ONE more time *lol*), and I got stuff for my FREEZER (!) and everything.  I just appreciate it all to a rather demented level, I must say *lol*!!!!!  But hey, it is impossible to appreciate things too much, isn't it?

I just love the BTD lifestyle, that is all there is to it.

It's soooo true what everyone has been saying about the satisfaction and health of cooking for yourself.  I love cooking & the BTD gave me a renewed appreciation for how great it is because I have been able to have so much control over my diet, whereas (like Missy said) it's so hard to be compliant when you are eating out or don't have control over your food preparation.  I just had my kitchen hijacked by company for 2 days and it was rough... Peppermint Twist, I really feel for you being without a kitchen for so long & I'll jump into the celebration of how great it is to make our own meals!

And its so true that is destressing. Chopping vegetables is like a meditation....well, you guys know all this....but ...yes, let's celebrate it! I'm going shopping today at WF! Yay!

My parents (both) never used any packged food to prepare meals.  In 1963, when I married, I didn't even realize there were packages just ready to add a thing or two, except for cake mixes.  I remember mixing up bread dough for cinnamon rolls at night, putting them in the refrigerator and getting up early to take them out to finish raising.  Then, when I was officially awake and they had risen properly, I would bake them!  Such a wonderful smell to start the day!

To this day, packaged mixes or pre-prepared foods have rarely been used or served in my home.  Sometimes my husband and I will visit our favorite restaraunt, but even there the food is homemade.  Homemade just tastes better.  

Since I started with the BTD, I read the labels on whatever food I plan to purchase.  That included those little labels on the fruits and vegetables.  If there is a fruit or vegetable lable that begins with 94, that is the one I'll buy because it is organic.


The first step toward success is taken when you refuse to be a captive of the environment in which you first find yourself. Good health to you & yours.

Serena, I get the same remarks with my lunches. And the funniest thing is that it's so simple and quick to make these lunches but most people just can't be bothered't get it. I have even been offered money to make a coulple of the girls their salads! lol I think it's all in the preperation, once you have everything ready ahead of time cooking or putting dishes together doesn't take much time at all. I can usually get a good meal ready in under 30min. As much as I enjoy cooking, I try not to spent too much time in the kitchen. I prepare all my veggies and such on Sunday to be ready for the week. If people do that, they would see how simple preparing a meal can really be. I always give my son leftovers in a thermos for his lunch and the kids at school are always amazed at the goodies he has. While they are eating all these processed meats and packaged foods, I feel good knowing that my son at least is getting a healthy meal and that makes a big difference. It's not always an avoid meal but at least it's a homemade meal and I know exactly what went in it.

Ain't that the fabulous truth?  I literally just throw some meat and veg into a pot, cover it, set the oven for 350, and an hour later, I have lunch for two or three days!  And during that hour, I'm not standing there staring at the oven door, I'm doing other things, baby.  What could be easier?

They always think I have some great recipe or something, and little do they know it is literally, throw this in, throw that in, 350, aaaand:  BAKE!

(Brig, don't get mad that I said "bake" when technically it might be "roast", I just said bake because that is what the button says on the range--don't hate me because I'm beautiful!)

Today for lunch we have a stew of turkey sausage, aduki beans, green beans and I forget what else (made this last week--hope it is still good!).  I know, I know, no beneficials, but that was before I went out and stocked up.  That was made before I really got into the new stove groove.  Manana, for instance, I shall be dining on a dish of beef (beneficial), kale (beneficial), and sweet potato (okay, neutral, so sue me).

Yay, loving this whole homemade food thing SO much it is scary!

I don't like to cook at all, but, I try very hard to as much raw food as possible.

Not everything needs to be cooked. Our fresh fruits and veggies are great in their live form.

Sometimes the most simple can be the most delicious.

What a great thread!   Thank you for opening this up Peppermint.  I knew when I started BTD in Jan '05 that it was going to be an adventure in homecooking and I took it on.  A year and half later I'm still cooking most of everything I eat and I love it.  I invent new dishes all the time and never run out of ideas compliant for this O woman. It's another creative outlet.  I take my home made left overs to school for lunch and get interested comments almost everyday about how good my food looks and smells.  My lunch bunch is really tired of me talking about BTD, but they envy my food.  Most of them still do candy bars and soft drinks, frozen entres, or school lunch.  School lunch is really about startches.  These are teachers! highly educated people who can't find time or energy to cook at home.  They are missing so much.
Another bennefit.....I started dating the single man next door to me (who is a B) and when I invited him to dinner a couple times, he was amazed that I still cook!  He said the women he has been dating have almost all given up cooking and expected him to take them out all the time.  
We are engaged to be married and now I am combining O and B menus and that has been fun.  
Yea!   Love in the kitchen!

From my experience, I totally agree with your soon to be husband. (By the way congratulations!) Definitely a big turn-off. I definitely could write a lot more about this.

Even before the BTD I usually preferred home cooked food. Now I want the better quality food I get at home.

I have dated women that had children and would eat out almost every night. That doesn't impress me on many levels!

I dated a women that always conveniently seemed to show up at my house hungry around lunch or dinner time. I don't think she ever cooked a single meal for me.

I have dated women that seemed to have eaten at every restaurant in town. How do you do that unless you are eating out a lot!

I don't consider cooking that hard, at least the kind of cooking I do. Nor is it exorbitantly time consuming. So why does it seem like much of our society is so adverse to enjoying the process and the results of true whole food home cooked meals? Is it a sign that our part of our society is generally getting lazy and wants/expects everything to be done for them?

I read too many online dating profiles where all the women say is I like to travel, eat out, go to movies, blah, blah, blah. I want to meet someone that is still willing to roll up their sleeves and put some effort into life, be a participant instead of just a spectator.

Amen MoDon! It is so true--I think our society has made it too easy with all these fast food restaurants and mega meals available that it has made people very lazy. My son sees this with his friends and asks for fast food because that is what his buddies are eating. Some parents even drop off McDonalds to their kids for lunch and I think that is absolutley disgusting. What does it take to pack a proper nutritious lunch for your kids? Not too much effort if only they give it a try. Now these kids will be growing up eating junk food all their lives and it will be hard for them to change once they get into their teenage years and on into adulthood. I tell my son, as long as his grads are kept up and he doesn't get into any trouble for the week than he can have a treat at the end of the week. I don't even allow him to drink any pop, I refuse to buy it. I never grew up like that, we never had pop in our house, I can't stand the stuff. We always had nutrious home cook meals growing up and that is what I am trying to teach my son. Although he complains about it at times, he is enyved at school by his friends. One particular little girl has been over for dinner at times, and she always comments " I wish my mom would cook like this" What is this world coming to. It's sad when you think about it because these people don't know what their missing.
