I'm sorry to ask this again, if it has already been answered, but does Nutritional Yeast have the same food values as Brewers Yeast? Or are they different. Can't find NY in ny book or Typebase 4. I am especially interested in A's and O's. |

nutritional yeast is what they call "primary grown for human consumption", in other words, it is grown on media (such as beets) , the flavor is far better , nutritive value, too, . Brewer's yeast, on the other hand, is a byproduct of the beer brewing industry, grown on hops, and can be (depending on the brand) extremely bitter. |

Hi Folks,
today I've got a wee bit of gas ... hydrogen sulphide (known as 'rotten eggs) because last night I tried a little variation on Edna's recipe:
mine goes: 1 part ghee 1 part e-v olive oil 1 part hemp oil @2 parts nutition yeast a d**h of lemon juice a d**h of sea salt + @30 drops of liquid Kyolic + @20 drops of blackstrap molasses
Like Edna's mine too tastes like peanut butter ... but today ... oh, man! The reasons for these deviations are - the hemp oil (supplying many EFA's) + Kyolic stirred together to form EFA - protein bonds ... the lemon to provide extra acidity for the minerals in both the engivita yeast and the molasses to be better digested ...the basic reaction (Rudin) of B vitamins and EFA's and essential amino acids requires that these go-together ... ie. the hemp oil + the NY/engivita.
Tonite will try again with some taurine addedd to this mix. It is supposed to prevent the formation of the H2S - gas ... we'll see
Still experimenting
John |

Hi every one. Hunting is over. Today I got the right stuff (I hope) It is not exactly flakes. Is more of a powder. I let you know what it is written outside the container. First of all is Dutch product. packed by a Greek company called Bio Natural Hellas SUPERZYME powder Primary grown Yeast of British codex B.P.C. So I hope that is right. I am planning to make cars54 spread. Do I have to make it every time? or can I make some and keep it in a jar at the fridge? Sesame oil is an avoid for B's. Complete avoidance of the oil would make any difference? I have my ghee waiting and thinking that olive oil will be too much. I am impatiently waiting for your replies Ion |

Hi, ion:
Good question about storing it, I've never tried. I usually just make up as much as I need. You could probably store it in the fridge, but put it in an opaque container, not a transparent one, as light can destroy the wonderful B vitamins in the yeast.
If you had just said that the brand you bought is more of a fine powder than powdery flakes, that would make me wonder if it might be a brewer's yeast versus a nutritional yeast, which would make it a tad more bitter (if it is brewer's). BUT the fact that you also added that it says "primary grown" is very GOOD and means that it is nutritional yeast (grown primarily for human consumption, not as a byproduct of the beer brewing industry). Either way (whether brewer's or nutritional), it should taste quite divine...just a tad more bitter if the brewer's. Let us know if you like it!!!! I love the stuff! |

Hi leaping greenly! While waiting any reply I just stick my finger in it ...and I tell you I can easily eat it... by the spoon(!) Your expression Divine fits perfectly. In fact there is some more writing in Greek which carefully read and states clearly that is Primary natural Nutritional Yeast produced by the culture of unicellular organism(Saccharomyces Cerevisiae) into nutritive component . Also a bit further very very clearly states that it is not yeast which has been used for beer production. SO THIS IS IT leaping greenly! You know the song I can feel it in the air tonight.... (it is about 9 in the evening) My mood is a bit like that. My warmest wishes for Happy -happy moments. Thankyou Ion ps didn't mention any thing about the olive oil. |

You know what, I realized that it HAD to be nutritional yeast just before reading your quoted post, and I edited my post to reflect that. If a yeast says "primary grown", that means it was specifically grown for human consumption and that means it is nutritional yeast. Brewer's yeast is very similar nutritionally, but tends to be bitter, as it is a byproduct of the beer brewing process and the producers don't really usually care as much what in the flip it tastes like, ya know? I love them both, but the primary grown (nutritional) yeast is really far and away the BEST! OMG, I'm so glad you have had the chance to experience this! One caveat: Don't eat too much of this in the evening, as the B vitamins can keep you wide awake at night--energy alert! |

Edna and all, thanks for the info on NY. I went to the hfs and low and behold there it was. It sure smells good. Smells like fresh baked bread. Yummy! I will be adding this to my morning protein shake like someone suggested. |

I personally prefer it in savory things versus sweet things like shakes, but many people do put it into shakes, so try it. But if you don't like it, don't give up on it until you try it in savory ways like the other ways bandied about here. |

I read an article about it today that talked about how good it is for you but also pointed out that you should have more than 3 TBS/day or it would affect uric acid. "As a warning, I should note it has been reported consumption of more than 3 tablespoons of nutritional yeast daily may lead an increase in uric acid in the bloodstream, putting stress on the kidneys. Be wise and eat everything in moderation to prevent dietary issues in the future. Always consult with a dedicated nutritionist for valued advice." Jane

That is what I meant....not more than 3 TBS/day or it could ultimately affect your kidneys. I don't know what category it would fall under. It's sort of like a supplement and sort of like a condiment....a very healthy condiment. |

As with the issue of red meat and uric acid, this is easily counteracted by drinking a lot of water in the hours after consuming nutritional yeast, although I've never even heard of it raising your uric acid levels in the first place, but just say that it does, for the sake of argument. If so, water drinking would counteract that.
In general, it is crucial to remember to drink enough water each day, especially on a high-protein diet like the O diet. |

Edna, I forgot when I made my shake this morning to put in the NY. So what I did later was to sprinkle it on my almond butter and rice cake snack. I seemed to be okay. Nothing noticeable so I imagine the almond butter had more of the taste. Thanks for your comment. |

Try my nutritional yeast spread, which I think is discussed ad infinitum right here in this very thread, or perhaps another thread...it is discussed somewhere, dern it *lol*! I know Equipro had a thread about it recently, but I think it is in this puppy, too. |
