A database of blood group correlations to common diseases

Total number of records: 145 Matching records: 1

Infectious disease, Staphylococcus

Description:Group AB is associated with greater virulence when their urinary tract is infected with Staphylococcus bacteria.

Group A more purulent infections.326 employees of 4 medical institutions (1 regional hospital, 2 city hospitals and a maternity clinic) were examined for the presence of S. aureus carriership. Examinations were made every 3 months for 3 recent years. The results of these examinations were compared with the distribution of the blood groups in the AB0 system among the carriers. Constant and malignant carrier state was detected mainly in persons with blood group A. (4)

Recently, considerable evidence has been accumulated showing that carbohydrate-containing blood group substances represent prime candidates for the specific interaction with microbial surface lectins in infectious diseases. Accordingly, clinical studies have proved that urinary tract infections by Staphylococcus saprophyticus and outer ear canal infections by Pseudomonas aeruginosa can be positively correlated with the patients blood group. Apparently, the blood group antigens (terminal carbohydrates) represent receptors recognized by S. saprophyticus and P. aeruginosa surface lectins. (1)

[Urinary tract infections caused by Staphylococcus saprophyticus. Haemagglutination and inhibition tests with the Staph. saprophyticus isolates demonstrated in all instances N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc) specificity of the surface lectins. These findings support the hypothesis that the carbohydrate pattern of Blood group A (terminal GalNAc) is important for the colonization of exposed organs by Staph. saprophyticus with GalNAc-specific lectins. (2)

Blood serums of 1842 donorable Kiev inhabitants have been examined. It is shown that blood serum of people with different group belonging (by the ABO system) contains natural antialphastaphylolysins during the whole year. High titres of antialphastaphylolysins (3.0.10(3) ME/1-5.0.10(3) ME/1) are most frequently revealed among the persons of donorable age with group belonging A (II) in summer and spring. (3)
The serum of 100 adults living in Budapest was examined for isohaemagglutinin titre with haemaglutination, for staphylococcal-antitoxin titre with haemolysis inhibition and for bacterial antibody titre against 17 different groups of bacteria with passive haemagglutination. Antibody levels in males, except for certain bacterial antibodies, were somewhat lower than in females. The antibody titres, especially in men, decreased gradually from 20 to 50 years of age and were usually lower in Rh negative than in Rh positive persons. 5.)
