Gastro-esophageal reflux (GERD)

Description:Type O, with naturally high stomach acid production, is much more prone to develop GERD. However, when Type A contracts GERD, it is more likely to advance to a precancerous condition called Barrett's Esophagus, and even esophageal cancer.

ABH non-secretors have a higher incidence GERD.

GERD (gastro-esophageal reflux disease), or chronic heartburn, affects more than 20 million Americans on a daily basis. 10-20% of people with chronic GERD will develop Barrett's esophagus (a precancerous change in the cells lining the esophagus) and 5-10% of these people have an increased risk of developing cancer of the esophagus or stomach. Both cancers have been known since the 1950's to be linked to blood type A over other types. For the past two decades, the incidence of esophageal cancer has been increasing more rapidly than that of any other cancer in the United States. Unfortunately, patients who develop esophageal cancer subsequent to Barrett's typically have a poor prognosis because the cancer is often discovered at an advanced stage in which cure is difficult.

As with stomach cancer, Barrett's esophagus has been linked to blood type A (21) as has esophageal cancer itself. (22) In the 13 cases of Barrett's esophagus which reported outcomes on my website, 10 were type A blood (8 men, 2 women). All reported improvement in swallowing, lessening of heartburn and stomach pain upon adopting the type A diet.

Paradoxically, Barrett's esophagus is linked to the ulcer causing bacteria Heliobacter pylorri, which is itself linked to type O, not type A. However, we do know that pre-malignant cells do secrete copious amounts of blood group antigens, and as we saw in our discussion of genotype, many type people who are phenotypically type A, are genotypically AO, and thus capable of secreting the O(H) antigen as well as the A antigen.
