Barrett's Esophagus

Description:Barrett's Esophagus has been linked to blood group A, as have stomach and esophageal cancer. Barrett's esophagus and esophageal cancer also have a positive association with Lewis (a+b-) non-secretor phenotypes. (1)

Barrett's Esophagus has also been linked to the ulcer-causing bacteria, Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), which is implicated in the development of gastric ulcers. H. pylori predominantly afflicts group O not group A. However, pre-malignant cells secrete copious amounts of blood group antigens, and many people who are phenotypically group A, are genotypically AO, and thus capable of secreting the O antigen as well as the A antigen. In addition, low stomach acid, common in group A, increases the growth of bacteria. (2)
