Infectious disease, Pneumonia

Description:Blood group B is highly susceptible to the most common cause of pneumonia, the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae. Streptococcal disease occurs more often in Type Bs than other blood types, resulting in strep throat, or more serious illnesses such as toxic shock syndrome, bacteremia, and pneumonia. A severe form of streptococcal disease occurs primarily among neonates. The consequences of this infection can be sepsis, pneumonia and meningitis. Neurologic complications can also occur, resulting in loss of sight or hearing, and mental retardation. Death occurs in six percent of infants and 16 percent of adults. There is also a connection between Blood Type B and neonatal group B streptococci infection. This association is strong enough to show even based on the mother's blood type. That is, a Type B infant with a Type B mother has double the risk. (1)
