Winter settles in with a couple bangs!!!
December 2nd, 2006 , by adminWhen the clouds moved in this week not only did it warm up, but it also snowed! We must have gotten about 4 or 5 inches of the white stuff last night which made running my errands a bit more stressful. I drove over 50 miles today going from one place to another, but all the errands are finished.
One of the errands was for my hubby to drive my daughter’s SUV to her place so her husband would have it when he needed to go to work tonight. I picked him up there and brought him home. Her other vehicle had been in the garage since yesterday morning after she put it in the ditch while successfully trying to avoid a moose crossing the highway. Darkness, icy roads, moose, and cars just don’t get along well. Fortunately, she was uninjured but quite shaken after the incident. Now, her car is sporting four brand new studded tires which should help with traction in case another moose wants to cross the road in front of her again.
Then, last night my oldest daughter called. Their van had just been hit by a drunk driver. Everyone was okay except her stepson’s neck was sore from the seatbelt. The driver was not only drunk, but also uninsured. The insurance company says her van is totaled. She is very distraught over that because it looked good and ran well even though it was 10 years old. Now, she will have to try to find something else to drive with the little money her insurance company will pay for her van.
After getting a second accident related call in one day, I called the rest of the kids and told them to stay home! And, that was all before the snow which made the roads even slicker. Oh, well, just another winter day in Alaska.
The clouds left for most of the day and the sun shining on the fresh snow was beautiful. The eagles were aplenty today, too, and most were flying at treetop level. The ravens were busy scavenging goodies from the beds of pickups while they were parked. And, the little chickadees were busy eating the berries that are still visible in some areas.
Tonight’s dinner smelled so good as the roast was turning slowly in the rotisserie. Some smells really get attention. I steamed some brown rice and in another pot steamed some fresh Brussels sprouts that I took off the stem just before steaming. When they were finished I put just a dab of butter over them and some Celtic sea salt. They were delicious. We also had a shredded salad of many root veggies with a bit of Nayonaise dressing and a few raisins. A fresh salad of baby romaine lettuce combined with some fresh spinach and herbs and lightly coated with my olive oil, flaxseed oil, and grapeseed oil with herbs dressing. The plates were filled to overflowing and everyone ate their fill.
Once dinner was finished for us, I put together some goodies for the dogs. Don’t know how well they will like Brussels sprouts, but I put a couple in with the rice, some mashed potato, a piece of salmon and the last piece of roast. They don’t usually get much cooked meat. I’ll be getting them some raw chicken soon, which is a favorite of theirs. Yes, my dogs are spoiled and they know it, but boy, do they get excited when my husband brings out their food. If only my family got as excited for what I fix for them! Oh well! Guess I’ll have to settle for very happy dogs.
