Christmas in Nikiski
December 15th, 2006 , by adminThings are beginning to get back to normal again. Many activities fill each day as we prepare for Christmas. Tonight we attended a Christmas program in which one grandson played a part. There was one song they sang which I particularly enjoyed as it was about living in that town and was sung to the tune of Silver Bells. Unfortunately, there is no information listed as to who wrote these lyrics. I hope you find the lyrics enjoyable too.
When It’s Winter in Nikiski (Ni kiss key)
When it is winter in Nikiski
where the trees grow so tall
And the snow sparkles bright in the sunshine
When it’s winter in Nikiski
we will all have a ball
And out in the thick forest you’ll hear
Refrain:
Snowmachines, woodcutting
It’s wintertime in Nikiski,
On the lake, we will skate,
Soon it will be Christmas Day.
In the silent, quiet forest
where the animals roam,
And the bears hibernate for the winter.
Moose are munching, beavers crunching
And a shrew scurries by
As an owl hoots a song from a tree.
Refrain:
Whoo whoo whoo, who are you?
We are the kids from Nikiski
On our way, in our sleigh
Soon it will be Christmas Day.
When the snow piles to the rooftops,
And the temperature drops,
We’ll go home to our warm, cozy houses.
Light the woodstove, make some cookies
Curl up warm by the fire,
And we’ll dream of the day soon to come.
Refrain:
Santa’s here, We will cheer.
It’s Christmas time in Nikiski
With our toys, we will play
Oh, how we love Christmas Day!
The sky has cleared again so the temperature has dropped. On the way home tonight it was 5 degrees. We were able to see the stars and sometime tonight the aurora should be lovely. Maybe we will get a chance to see it.
Daylight has decreased to less than six hours a day and is now slowly crawling downwards to December 22 when it will begin to crawl upwards again. It is fairly dark for the months of December and January. In addition to all the darkness, it is very icy again. We have had some snow this week and it is covering the ice so walking is a bit treacherous and the roads seem to have been polished from the snow as the light winds brush it across the highways. It was fairly pleasant for a few days and we even had some rain. The rain, of course, froze on the roads and walkways turning to more ice. Then it snowed. So far, it has been a fairly typical winter of weird weather.
Hope all is going well with you and yours. Until next time………………..
