The Day after Thanksgiving
November 25th, 2006 , by adminThis has been a very busy, yet interesting, week. My husband and I spent a couple days in Anchorage while he was undergoing some medical tests. Everything checked out just fine. We ate all of our meals in the hospital cafeteria where we did avoid those items that had been cooked in favor of the fresh fruits and salad fixings that were available. Well, okay, I did at one meal eat some macaroni and cheese with reindeer sausage. That was my only real downfall, but it tasted so good and I rarely get to eat reindeer which was the reason I bought the macaroni and cheese.
The weather there wasn’t any warmer than the weather here and both places it was cold! It has been over two weeks now that the temperatures have been well below the norm and most of the time it has been below zero with several days of very windy conditions. This is getting old. So far, there is no let up in sight. Of course, on the plus side is that on a couple occasions the aurora borealis has been out for people to enjoy. I haven’t been one of those people however. Fortunately, the evening weather on tv shows lovely photos of what I did miss.
I was quite pleased with my self restraint at my brother’s house yesterday with the turkey and all the other goodies available for the dinner. I am determined to stay under the amount of calories I use regardless of any holiday. I still ate very well by making wise choices more in serving size than in the food. However, I did not partake of any of the rolls and butter, or some of the other extra rich foods. Even so, when I stepped on the scales this morning it showed my weight to be back to where I started last week. I suppose that was water weight due to eating foods that aren’t the best for me and not eating as much raw food as I have become accustomed. Although the calories eaten were below the need, my body said “you can’t eat this stuff and get away with it.” So today it has been back to eating more raw foods overall, which I really do enjoy.
The grocery store is reaping the rewards of my shopping primarily in the produce department. Fresh, organic foods that are shipped to Alaska are expensive. Thought you might like some examples: Apples (most varieties) $2.49 pound; pears $2.49 pound; oranges $1.99 pound; broccoli $2.29 pound, avocados $2.50 each; celery $2.29 pound; beets $2.99 for 3 medium; chard 6 leaves $1.99-2.99; yellow onions $3.99-4.99 for 3 pounds; tomatoes $4.29 pound, baby romaine, cut and washed 5 ounces for $2.99, and on and on. I think that these prices are a bit higher than what is found in most of the U.S. Nonetheless, I buy what I need, use it up, and benefit from the bounty I am so fortunate to find.
It is once again below zero. There is very little wind tonight. If I were to look outside, I would see a sky full of stars and maybe the northern lights. Unfortunately, with it being less than comfortable temperature-wise, I will forego such beauty and opt to stay warm.
So, until next time, take care……….

A Winter Chill
November 18th, 2006 , by adminWinter still has us in its grips as this long spell continues. At least the high winds have subsided. I finally put on my first winter coat this week as I gave up and finally acknowledged that it is indeed winter. The jacket I put away is the one I wear for most of the year usually starting in April through at least October or until the temperatures drop to below 20 degrees. This winter jacket has a bit of insulation inside, but with all the high winds, even it was hardly warm enough. Almost grabbed the next coat in line, but didn’t go anywhere so it is still put aside. The winds were so strong that they knocked down two of our trees and blew all my wind chimes off their hangars! Bitter cold winds!!!
Today’s sunrise was at 9:10 a.m. and sunset was at 4:27 giving us a total of 7 hours, 16 minutes, 58 seconds between sunrise and sunset. We lost 4 minutes and 44 seconds over yesterday. Daylight will continue to decrease for another month. The state’s high temperature was 44 degrees at Adak on the Aleutian Chain, and the low was -30 degrees in the center of the state at Delta Junction. Most of Alaska has been hit with high winds and at any temperature, it is bitter cold, but for the people living in the colder temperature areas the wind chill factor puts the feel of the cold at least 20-30 degrees colder than the actual temperature.
I am continuing to enjoy eating my super salad and have added a green smoothie or two to my daily diet focusing on eating lots of raw veggies and fruits. It still amazes me how much better I feel and how much clearer my thinking has been as I increase those raw foods. I have always eaten a lot of vegetables, but have not eaten all that much that were raw until the past couple months. Part of that may be just living here where the cold gets to you and a steaming cup of soup, or warm veggies in a pot roast just help take the chill off the bones. Now, most of my veggies are in salad form and that always goes well with the salmon we had for dinner tonight or the steaks that were part of last night’s dinner, too.
In a few days, my husband and I will be making another trip to Anchorage. This time we will be staying at least a night or two, but the boys will do fine taking care of things while we are away. The forecast is for clear skies so the highway should be in pretty good shape although there may be some black ice here and there. I always drive as those there was black ice all around anyways. So long as it doesn’t warm up and snow, things should be okay. Some people don’t know how to drive in and on the snow and make it hazardous for those who do.
Well, this is about all for this time. Take care. Until then …………….
ein Loblied auf Enada NADH :-) praise of Enada NADH
November 15th, 2006 , by adminguten Abend Ihr Liebchens,
pheren Nervensystem...( hey Melissa...that's for you!!) :-)
G'd evening all dearles :-)
ooo wow, since a while I felt very shluffy and thatswhy I take every morning and midday 7,5 mg's Enada NADH on my empty stomach. What kind of stuff ist that?- its' a coenzyme called coenzym A or also coenzym 1, and consists from Nicotinamide-Adenin-Dinucleotide, its' a B-vitaminoid and a descendant of
Niacin, B3 . The treatments might be for multifactorel sickness as Diabetes, Alzheimer, div. Dementia, for
detoxing by taking xenobiotica, it can repare DNA-demages, and helps to restaure the myelinsynthese in the periphere and central nervoussystem......hey, Melissa that's for you :-)
dito it works wonder in cases of CFS, but here higher intake is recommended, up to 30mg's a day...under control of a doc..of course.... hey Madame Elli..this is something for you :-)
but gladly I don't use this stuff for such sickness but more for my mental and psychological fitness to get my work done, and a little toughy help for my memory too, and yes my dearles I can tell you, this stuff works amazingly. No problems in longtermuse, no sideeffects... the only thing is that it might become a bit expensive...even very expensive if we don't know the sources :-)
It exists even today as a sub-lingual tablet, for a very fast outburst of energy, but I do prefere the other pillies, so no energylack to be expected here. It's a real multitalent, and I want to recommend it to everybody with moodswings, depressions, CFS ....and ....and....and... try it...you'll be more than amazed.
So I wish you all the best, big hugs
truly yours Isa
A week of sadness
November 10th, 2006 , by adminThis has been a very stressful period of time. Last week, a friend of my boys’ was killed in Iraq on his second tour of duty there. He volunteered to go back. I remember talking with him shortly after his first tour there and he told us that he did want to go back, that the info we were seeing on the television was not at all what they were seeing over there. So, once again he left his young wife and their infant and went back. He died there doing what he truly believed was right. This 22 year old, Michael Lasky leaves his wife, Jessica, and his one year old daughter, Liberty. His funeral is going to be on Sunday.
There is another funeral today for one of my friends who has fought many illnesses throughout her life. I will miss her, too. She was a very kind hearted person. She died on her 30th wedding anniversary.
Tomorrow is, yet, another funeral for another stellar person. He died of cancer. His niece is our daughter in law. She adored him and lived with him and his family for a couple years before marrying our son.
Three funerals in three days. That just doesn’t seem right. Except for Michael, the other two died at 56 years of age. Fifty-six!!! Wow, they had so much left to do on this earth but illness took both of them. Michael was just really beginning his life.
Tomorrow is also my mother’s birthday. I will give her a call and hopefully she will be in some relatively coherent state. With Alzheimer’s, it is hard to know from day to day just where the mind might take you.
With all of the above stressors, I guess it isn’t surprising that I m fighting some kind of upper respiratory infection, too. Actually, I think I was feeling a bit too cocky about making it through October without getting my usual respiratory infection! So, it landed, just a few days into November. Been doctoring myself up with lots of vitamin C, emergen-C, elderberry extract, noni juice, and a concoction of 1 cup raw honey, 1 cup raw apple cider vinegar, and 8 garlic cloves blended very well. Of course, with the garlic smelling breath, who would want to get near me anyway.
At least the fever is gone today. I’m also not so stuffy today either. But, until this goes away, I won’t be going to anybody’s funeral. I cannot justify going into a crowd of saddened people with an active case of crud to spread around to the living. So, I will stay cooped up in the house and not intentionally infect anyone, anywhere, with a cold, flu, or the crud.
I am still thoroughly enjoying my super salads and am trying to incorporate more dishes that are raw. I was thinking about that concept this week. We are constantly reminded about various vitamins and minerals that are essential for our well-being. Yet, I really notice how much energy I get from a nice glass of fresh vegetable juice and from the salads, too. I think we are being short-changed by not being really informed as to the benefits of those enzymes found only in raw foods. Anything that has been cooked, pasteurized, or denatured just does not have any enzymes. The enzymes are the living parts of food. That seems very important to me and something that needs addressed. What are we missing in health because of this important oversight?
Well, this is about all for today. Hopefully next time I’ll have some good and helpful information. Till next time.

Winter Musings
November 3rd, 2006 , by adminWow!!!! It is already November. This year has flown by! Winter has definitely arrived, too, with the state’s low today at Chandalar at -18 degrees. Our low last night was 12 degrees and it got up to 30 by late this afternoon. Tonight’s low for us is expected to be around 7 degrees. The daylight continues to shrink by 5 minutes plus every day and now we are getting close to just 8 hours a day now. The daily variation will slow soon and by the end of the month we’ll be at about 6 hours a day slowly ebbing to the 5 ½ hours just before Christmas.
The AFN convention was very good and we enjoyed looking at all the native artwork for sale. There were also some salmon strips and canned beluga whale for sale too. I love to see the beautiful handcrafted works of art that is so prevalent in the native community. They range from intricately woven grass baskets, to birch bark bowls, beaded slippers and jewelry, carved ivory, jade and baleen, or many other items. There were beautiful items to buy or just enjoy from one side of the building to the other.
Friday evening we enjoyed a big banquet of good food, most of which did fit with the blood type diet for most people, too, as the variety was plentiful. Hundreds of people attended the banquet but they were just a fraction of those attending the AFT convention. When the AFN comes back in two years Anchorage will have a new convention center which may be big enough to hold all the convention goers. This convention was so full that there was crowding from the conference room to the hallway and all of downstairs. But, a good time was had by all. Next year the conference will be in Fairbanks where they do have a very large convention center already. But, many who attend the convention in Anchorage don’t go to the one in Fairbanks and visa versa. Alaska is a very large state and the Indian, Eskimo, Aleut, Haida, Tglinget, and others travel quite a distance to attend one or the other conventions.
Dog sledding season is finally beginning as I saw two dog teams pulling two four-wheelers beside the road today. There isn’t enough snow on the ground for them to pull a sled as we only have maybe an inch. Those dogs looked so happy to be in tandem and going somewhere, almost anywhere, so long as they were in harness and heading out. If you want to see fun and excitement, just watch those dog teams someday. Those dogs are athletes thoroughly enjoying the excitement of participation and competition.
We had a nice and simple dinner tonight. It consisted of hamburger patties, applesauce, and my super salad and oil dressing. As it is continuing to get chillier, then I will be making more soups and stews, too. There are few things that warm us up so well and taste so good, too.
Well, this is all for tonight. Have a good one. Till next time…………………..
What's With This Bean Thing?
November 1st, 2006 , by adminUsually, I like to comment on Peter D's posts but this time after reading about the University of Bridgeport presentation, I'm sitting with my mouth open and in a daze. Every once in a while, Peter leaves me in this dumbfounded state.
Glad to hear about Martha's second degree black belt and loved that photo on the "current disease care system and how it bumps up against Waddington's concept of an 'Epigenetic Landscape'". Well it was the scenery mostly, not the dry sense of humor although I 'got it'.
I think I'll stick to mentioning my latest attention to BEANS. I wrote a post about it on my healthybody nyc blog last night and thought I would pass on the info.
Beans have a special health effect as lentils, peanuts, pinto and soy beans possess cancer fighting lectins. I am encouraged to have beans 6-9 times a week(3 cup portion size). The frequency is scaled up a bit since I had breast cancer nine years ago.
Pinto beans and basmati rice with garlic and olive oil is one of my favorite dishes but 3 cups, 6-9 times a week!!

PS-Peter, are you sure that there's no typo on the number 3 as in cups? You want me to have 3 cups of beans 6-9 times weekly? Are you serious?
