Extraversion vs Introversion
I have been enjoying the thread on Extraversion and Introversion, so of course, I need to put my 2 cents worth in.
People can have extraverted as well as introverted preferences. This means although one can appear to be extremely extraverted at work, they may become introverted at home or vice versa.
The scale below shows the different prefences of introversion and extraversion as shown in Form Q of MBTI. In my review of over 1000 tests, I have only seen about 10 perfectly extraverted or introverted people. (100% of the scales in Preference).
Extraversion Preferences -
Initiating: sociable, congenial introduce people
Expressive: demonstrative, easier to know, self-revealing
Gregarious: Seek popularity, join groups
Active: interactive, want contact, listen and speak
Enthusiastic: Lively, energetic, seek spotlight
Introversion Preferences:
Receiving: reserved, low-key are introduced
Contained: Controlled, harder to know private
Intimate: seek initimacy, one-on-one, find individuals
Reflective: onlooker, prefer space, read and write
Quiet: Calm, enjoy solitude
Although all of my work associates and acquaintances find me extremely extraverted, the people who are closest to my find me somewhat intoverted. So I would consider myself an Intimate Extravert.
I am initiating (in preference): assertively outgoing in social situations, planning and directing gatherings, act as a social facilitator, carry out social obligations with finesse, introducing people to each other with ease, enjoy linking people whose interests are similar (erstwhile matchmaker).
Expressive: talk a lot, seen by others as cheerful, warm and humorous, easy to get to know, may talk too much or say inappropriate things (as my sons say, do you want to add another side of embarassment to the entre of loud?)
Intimate (out of preference) - like large group activities, or one-on-one conversations at different times. Degree of comfort with strangers depends on situation, appear outgoing at times and reserved at other times. MAY NOT WANT MANY INTENSE INTIMATE RELATIONSHIPS. Are moderately comfortable relating to casual acquaintances.
Active (midzone) Talk in person about personal information and communicate technical information in writing. Prefer to learn new subject matter through face-to-face contact. Can be at ease actively participating in events or quietly observing them. If familiar with the subject, prefer to learn more by reading.
Enthusiastic: like being where the action is. Often seek to be the centre of attention. Show wit and humour when speaking with others. Feel that life is meant to be exciting. Get bored without activity, so I make it happen and often engage others in the activity.
So if people say, you can't be an extravert because you are quiet at parties, or you can't be an introvert because you are enthusiastic, explain to them the majority of people exhibit out-of-preference characteristics and you are unique in your type!!!!
