I like to look at packaged food labels when I am walking through my grocery store. These labels I read are attached to foods I would never buy. What I find is that packaged foods made in Europe or abroad have fewer additives than ones produced or marketed for North America. I’ve also noticed that some of the food companies are turning into quasi drug companies…the labels and packaging are starting to promise health benefits. For example:
Activia…a new bacterial enhanced (Bifidus regularis?) yogurt from Danone, boasts that it will speed up “intestinal time”
Elations…a new flavored beverage that boasts ‘joint flexibility’ by adding glucosamine and chondroitin
7UP Plus…fortified with Vitamin C and calcium marketing for ‘strengthning your bones’…healthy soda?
I believe we will see more food companies coming out with ‘functional foods’. Since drug companies lately have begun to loose favor in the eye of consumers, the packaged food companies see it as an opportunity to step in. I read somewhere that close to 50% of the US population suffers from at least one chronic condition. Though you won’t see words like ‘arthritis’ or ‘constipation’ on food labels…FDA won’t allow it… catch phrases like ‘regulate your digestive system’ will surely catch the attention of people who whiz by the packaged foods section.
According to a BrainReserve survey in 2004, 65 percent of people said they were using diet to treat
an illness, whether through a low-fat regimen, a diet of organic food or a higher intake of certain
kinds of food (eat your beneficials people). I’m sure the other 35% will look to food and drug companies to aid whats ailing them.
Can you imagine Coca-Cola being a carrier of health and wellness benefits? Who knows, next time you’re in a doctors office, you might see a Coca Cola rep waiting to see the doctor about their new product that ‘helps regulate blood sugar’
Here’s another good reason for eating real food according to your blood type…you’ll hopefully never see this transpire in your doctor’s office because you’ll have no reason to go.
