Dark Under-Eye Circles ~ Type B Vegetarians? ~ UTI Relieved with BUCHU ! :-D
January 27th, 2002 , by admin
hi heidi, thanks for answering my last Q so quickly! i have another one. a friend of a friend (blood type unknown) is in his late 40's and has incredibly dark circles under his eyes. he has had them for several years and i assured him you'd know why!!! surely it is something lacking his diet or too much of something. he doesnt drink or smoke and regularly takes supermarket multivitamins. the dark circles are quite scary, dark grey nearly black! any ideas, thanks alot and take care.ros xoxo
Ros, it is a classic sign of food allergy. He's eating lots of stuff NOT OK for his type. Wheat, milk and milk products, corn, and other highly allergenic foods for various types are the likely culprits -- along with the junk they put in supermarket vitamins! ;-} See what you can do with him, eh? :-D
Dear Heidi: My humble apologies! I just finally figured out that the answers to my questions are in your columns--from last November, about allergies to fish and about my family all being B types. Thank you for your thorough answers and advice. However, could you tell me what protein foods we can eat which are not meat? Is tofu not okay for B-types? My husband & I have been eating it for years as a meat substitute and we really do NOT want to go back to meat or fish after 25 years! Now that I know where to look, I await your response. Thanks! -Susan
Hello, Susan! If you have any questions about food values, just go straight to the TYPEbase3 database and enter one word (like 'soy' or 'tofu') to find the ratings for those foods.
I understand your desire to remain vegetarian, and of course these diets are only "tools" made available for your use -- insofar as you choose to use them.
It is difficult to design an adequate diet for type B if no flesh foods are eaten, but it can be accomplished if you apply diligence and patience, and a willingness to make some trade-offs in favorite foods, in order to stay vegetarian without consuming avoids. I feel it is only fair to reiterate that vegetarianism isn't ideal for your physiology (nor your children's), but these are decisions which I also feel are absolutely up to the parents to make.
Very best wishes, dear, and let us know how you all do! :-D
With regards to the UTI, I had a similar problem a couple years back with recurring infections. I got tired of taking antibiotics, and discovered Buchu tincture. It's a south african plant if I am correct. I took a few drops twice a day for two days and I haven't had a hint of infection since. It was unbelievable. It's available in the Burgess & Finch range, which is available in South Africa. Vanessa
Thank you for this, Vanessa! I found buchu tincture at www.azurestandard.com, among others online. We have no ABO rating for it, so those who wish to use it should keep an eye out for any untoward reactions.
I hope you're doing well, and thanks again! :-D
Technical difficulties, please stay tuned!

Gallstones, Salts, Water and UTIs! :-D
January 25th, 2002 , by admin
This is embarrassing to me that I don't know this, but when you flush out gallstones, is it in your urine or you feces? Are kidney stones what come out in your urine???? Bonnie
Hi, Bonnie! Doncha be embarrassed, I just found out that hard-shelled crabs re-grow their limbs. How's that for a late discovery? :-}
Gallstones are dumped out of the gallbladder via the bile duct, into the intestinal tract, and ya poop 'em out. Kidney stones ((OUCH)) are indeed passed through the urinary tract. And the elimination of gallstones through the flush process is PAINLESS, hoorah! :-D
I am concerned with Lisya's bladder infection. She does not mention drinking eight glasses of water a day!!! Lou L
Hey there, Lou! Yep, back in September she noted that the water technique does help her, and that she was continuing it. Good note, though! :-)
Hi Heidi, Just a quick note for Emily who was asking about Epsom Salts. When she buys it she has to be sure she is buying the type which can be taken internally. In our drug store they sell two types, one for uses such as for baths, soaks, etc and the other (in a smaller bottle) that is safe to drink when mixed with a liquid. Sharon
Hello, Sharon! Excellent point. The ES I get here in NYC is plain magnesium sulphate, generic brand -- and it notes both bath/soaking and laxative use on the container. Emily's in Canada, so she should certainly check with her chemist on the right brand to use. Thanks, Sharon! :-)
I had to write a note for the lady with the persistent bladder infections: I've had these since I was a child, and that was a number of decades ago! I do now have a chiro/nutritionist who is BTD-friendly. And I've done plenty of research on my own.
I'm glad you suggested she get help in sorting this out, Heidi, but I wanted her to know that such a thing can get better! Mine is much better now, though not 100% gone. I took natural substances (don't want to give brand names unless that's OK, Heidi. The things that worked for me might not be the right ones for her) that promoted "good" intestinal bacteria and made things unfriendly for the bad guys.
But also I had to stay away from the sweet or starchy foods that were giving fuel to the infection. Even my favorite dried figs and prunes had to go for a while, and even now they are rare, and soaked overnight in water. More vegies, more raw food, kidney/bladder cleanses, and things did greatly improve. I really could not eat much in the way of carbs, and had to keep a very "clean" diet, with lots of salads, vegetable juice, and mostly organic food, to get better.
This is something non-secretors need to watch, isn't it? Cyndi
Thanks, Cyndi! It certainly is something that hits the non-secretor population with more frequency, intensity and persistence.
Your message about keeping a very clean diet, and particularly about soaking dried fruit, raises the issue of food additives as implicated in bladder conditions. Pesticides and sugars seem to aggravate them no end, and these are excellent tips on how to take those irritants out of the picture.
If you'd like to send me the brand names of what you used, that would be wonderful ~ if there is no website showing the ingredients, please list those as well. And hey ~ don't forget to name your marvelous BTD chiro, cuz I'm sure a free plug here wouldn't do them harm, and there are still so many of us around the world who are searching for a great practitioner recommendation!
It's very good to hear your UTIs are well on the mend! and an inspiration to those who are battling them now. Thanks again, dear! :-D
Dear Heidi, Just finished catching up on the last three day entries. I was really happy to read about the progress in Alice G.'s comments.
Did you know a person can only purchase digital thermometers because mercury type are banned? I purchased TWO digital type and neither worked. It all had to do with taking temps for the thyroid situation. (B+Sec, age 62F) I borrowed the neighbor's, mercury type.
My temp had been 93 and 94 which I knew was way too low. The mercury type showed 96. After three 1/2 weeks of this, using iodine and eating more seafood (seaweed etc.) I still didn't feel much better and the temp didn't change. I pondered over all the info sent and decided to get more help. I've been taking a Thyroid & LTyrosine Complex from the HFS (five days). It calls for 2/ three times daily. I've been taking 2 each morn and night. My energy is much better, I'm sleeping good, my temp is now 96.5 and this seems to be slowly rising so think this plan is working better.
I also called Julia (herbalist recommended) she warned me to take very small amounts of iodine, (like you said) because too much could possibly shut the thyroid down. Also want to say I'm taking the B basic supplements, drinking the flaxseed oil/lecithin/juice cocktail twice a day, taking collinsonia Plus for veins, nitricycle, deflect and cortiguard. In addition I have added 800mg of Magnesium Asporotate which has greatly improved my elimination distess.
Also realized I wasn't eating enough nor drinking enough water.
My goals are: attain right weight, feel energetic, be free from illness. I realize life is not perfect but I want to get as close as I can. If you see anything I might change, I'll heed your advice. Thank you Dr. D. and you too, Heidi. Bless you both. Doris
Hello, Doris! I'm not sure how extensive any ban on mercury thermometers is, but I know not all digital thermometers are good for armpit temp-taking. You need one that works not only for oral, but for axillary (underarm) measurements. It should say, "oral/anal/axillary" somewhere on the package. The one I have is from PolyMedica Healthcare in Golden, Co, and it has a flexible tip and a digital readout.
I've very pleased that the thyroid/tyrosine complex is helping you. It's evidently just what you needed to get back on track.
I think you are doing exactly what you need to do, and that "tincture of time" is all you need to add. :-) I expect wonderful reports in the coming weeks! Bless you, and enjoy each improvement as it comes along! :-D
O Nonsecretor- Persistent Bladder Infection // Food Reactions, Gallstones, and the Flush :-)
January 24th, 2002 , by admin
Dear Heidi, It is Lisya again after a long time.
I am still struggling with my bladder infection unfortunatly. All waits for me is more treatments of antibiotics and I am not willing to take them in because it does not help and I suffer badly from it etc.
Just to remind, I tryed every thing from the protocols to heallix and eating only beneficials and neutrals. My skin is still bad (less than in the begining but still...) I am tired going to usless docters and I do not find any doctor whom is open to BTD. I tought, would it be wise to get a consult by tel. from doc bron or Dadamo, is it possible at all?
My other question is, I would like to do the gal bladder/liver flush when I go to the relevant site, she advices taking some Chinees herbs...Do I have to follow it in this way or is there an alternatieve?
I surched on previous topics but it is a never ending surch I hope you can help me, Thanks a lot Lisya
Greetings, Lisya ~ You tried antibiotics many times, and they made things worse rather than better -- so I support your decision not to take them.
My suggestions right now are to continue with the water+salt, take the probiotics daily (I know you discontinued supplements, but that one is the most important if you can add it back in - and ARA6 (larch) as well), and continue with bromelain as outlined in the protocols. If you have already completed two rounds of this (two months including time off) and still this infection persists, I suggest you go ahead and telephone the D'Adamo Clinic to request a consultation, because you have been suffering with this for too long -- since September and before! They will be able to give you more specific options for getting rid of this infection.
If you decide to do the gallbladder flush, use Julia's telephone number to speak to her about the herbs. They help a great deal in certain circumstances, and I think she may have very good advice for you there.
It is time to discuss the infection in depth with knowledgeable people, as they can ask you many questions relating to your situation, and they can analyze your condition very quickly and effectively.
Bless you, Lisya, and I am sure you will soon be free of this painful condition! Please keep in touch! :-)
Are expelled gallstones hard or does the olive oil soften them? LouL
Hi, Lou ~ Expelled gallstones come in all shapes, sizes and colors, and they may be soft, rubbery, or fairly solid. :-)
Good day heidi, I wanted to know for the flush if it is necesary to have Epsom salts because I do not know what they are. Where can I get them?
Also, is it normal that rice protein powder makes my nose run a lot and I get a pain on my left side after I eat it. Is it too much protein for my body to handle at once?
Thank-you so much once again! Till next time! Emily
Hello, Emily ~ For Epsom salts, go to any chemist/drugstore, and ask at the counter. It is often found in the 'first aid' or 'analgesic' section, out in the store. It's inexpensive and a common item in these shops. Here in my neighborhood, it comes in little white one-pint cartons.
Is there anything in your rice protein powder except rice? A runny nose can be a sign of allergy to that powder, and a pain on the left side (under the rib cage?) may mean the food is irritating the part of your digestive tract where it passes through the diaphragm.
Any food that gives you these kinds of troubles should be discontinued -- but first, make sure of the ingredients. The rice protein may be blended with other things that are causing the problem. Just check to see, OK? :-)
Type O ~ One approach to quitting COFFEE! :-)
January 23rd, 2002 , by admin
Hi Heidi, I read here everyday that I can. Love to hear about others" successes!
I just wanted to comment on coffee. I am an 0+ who has been a heavy coffee drinker for years, at least 25 or so. I have been able to switch to black tea for over a week now, and also watching the wheat. I am feeling quite good.
I am hoping to cut back on the black tea, or gradually go to green tea.
The symptoms that are lessening are waking up at 3am, less general fatigue, more energy.
I was having more muscle pains the first week and I attributed it to low serotonin. I read somewhere that caffeine causes one to use up their serotonin too fast. So I added some 5 htp. Seemed to do the trick.
As the weather here in CA gets warmer, I'll be drinking less tea in general. I am just happy to have avoided coffee as this was my hardest habit to break. Even exercise feels better now without it, if that makes sense.
Good luck to others in avoiding those avoids! ~~ Paula
Thank you, Paula! That's great news, and your example will inspire many to follow, I'm sure!
Best wishes, and keep us posted!! :-D

TB almond butter
warm water (optional)
Mix in large bowl with 2 cups home-made (recipe below) or HFS granola. Pour into a rectangular glass dish, sprayed with extra virgin olive spray oil. Bake at 350˚F for 20 minutes. When cool, cut into bars, wrap and keep in fridge.
Energy Bars

Add enough water to bind together.
To make bars: Stir the crushed macadamias or almonds into the mixture and press into a tin that has been sprayed with extra virgin olive spray oil. Chill. Can then be cut into whatever size you want. This amount fills a tray about 5 inches by 9 inches.

¼ cups chopped dried figs
¼ cup chopped dried mango
¼ cup chopped dried apricots
1 ½ cups soaked currants
Granola Bars
2 cups granola
2 beaten eggs
¼ tsp vanilla
Bake at 350˚ F for 15 to 20 minutes.
WOW!! Maria, thank you SO MUCH for posting these recipes!!
They sound just wonderful, and I'm feeling inspired to delve into all kinds of possible variations. I'm envisioning a plethora of blood-type keyed recipes for various flavors and preparations.
For instance, my A-nonnie would love a pumpkin-macadamia-spice bar. The pumpkin could be dried to a flexible paste in the oven. How about a lemon almond crunch? A soaked flax, nut & Live Cell Special? Or a Red Boy: red peanuts, dried red apples, red grapes, and cranberries, baked with steamed-then-dehydrated red rice? That cardamom Maria includes in the Power Bar would be a wonderful touch. Maybe, "Two Blue" ~ blueberries and blackberries with flax, black rice and buckwheat honey?
For you type O nonsecretors salivating over the Power Bar's oat granola that you can't have (myself among you), steam some whole rice of your choice, then press it with a rolling pin between layers of cheesecloth, and spread it out to bake a bit on a cookie sheet at low heat, till it's dry to the touch but still chewy. Skip the dried fruit component if desired, and just mix it right into the Power Bar, in place of the oat-based granola. You can use brown rice, red rice, even black lotus rice, depending on how you'd like the final product to look and taste.
Folks, you can use Maria's recipes as guidelines to create your own perfect suite of food bars. PRINT THIS PAGE! and get to work! :-D
Maria, you have blessed us by sharing your kitchen savvy ~ May your gifts to us return to you many-fold!! Thank you, dear! :-D
B Newbie in Alaska! ~ Supps 4 Bubs? ~ and A Resounding Success Story! :-)
January 21st, 2002 , by admin
Hello! I am new to the diet. As a type B, BTD says Wasa bread is okay, but rye is not. All of the Wasa bread at our local store (and there were several varieties) are rye based - are these okay for me or should I feed it to my AB daughter? Also, some of our local foods are not in the books or database, is there anyway to encourage Dr. D to find out about lectins in moose or caribou? What should I assume in the meantime? Lisa in Alaska
Greetings, Lisa! Welcome!!
Here's a rule of thumb for the items in Eat Right 4 Your Type: if it is a product rather than a whole food, the rating of that product depends on the value of the individual ingredients. So, for the avoid-rye folks, products containing rye are an avoid as well. I apologize for the confusion -- it stemmed from a desire to include 'alternate' products for people who might not know of them. We're moving toward listing only whole foods, distinct items and forms thereof from now on.
I also suggest that if you don't plan to get your secretor status tested, that you consider using the 'little books' for the updated food lists -- at the bottom of this page you'll find some recommendations and the full titles.
We don't yet have a rating on moose or caribou, but in the interim I would treat them as venison -- they're all closely related. Enjoy! And thank you for writing ~ I hope Spring is on the upswing there, finally? :-)
Hi Heidi, i'm not sure if i've asked you this before or not. i know i asked doc B. i tried to search but couldnt find it. i am anxious to know at what age i can start giving supps to kids? my one year old (Type A nonny) has weaned from breast feeding and is loving soy milk but does he now need immune enhancing help? what do you recommend i give him and how often and how much etc? i would really appreciate your help on this matter. take care, ros xoxo
Hallo, Ros! Unless he is showing signs of discomfort or illness, I wouldn't give him any supps at all. A wee little like him is best off without them, unless, as I say, he is in some kind of ongoing distresss... in which case it would be best for a skilled practitioner to advise on his treatment.
Just keep an eye on his nutrition, give him lots of hugs and kisses, and try to keep up with him. lol! he must be burning tracks in the floorboards by now. Warm wishes to you both, dear!! :-D
I have only recently been introduced to the Blood Type diet and after 1 month have noticed incredible improvement in my health.
I am a 53 year old female having struggled over the past 25 years with various symptoms, illnesses and diagnosis--including hypothyroidism, colitis, severe chronic muscle, joint, and bone pain, premature advancing osteoporosis, intermittent episodes of neurologic seizure activity, unexplainable weight loss, intolerances and allergic responses to foods and molds and even with documented lab results have basically been written off as a nut-case in the conventional medical world.
2 years ago, an abnormal IGA blood test result popped up with routine blood work and it was assumed I probably had Celiac Sprue. I went through the gastro testing including biopsy(which was neg for sprue but positive for colitis) and radically deleted all wheat products from my diet. I did feel better but after a year retested with even higher levels...the dr. had no answers and didn't seem to be concerned at all. It was suggested to just continue on the gluten-free diet. I still had all the same problems, but now to a slightly lesser degree.
I knew there had to be an underlying problem but trying to get someone to listen to you and did deeper for that cause is like digging a hole with a teaspoon....you get nowhere fast.
Recently, a friend mentioned she was reading this book and being a "scientic/biological-type" person, she saw merit in it and thought perhaps this might be a possible answer for my health issues and I might like to look into it. I was truly amazed and knew "experiencially" that I was already following the Type O diet about 75-80%! I decided there must be something to it, so jumped right in with both feet and have eliminated almost(still have to have my cup of java with vanilla coffee-mate creamer in the AM!Although this curiously does seem to act as a "beneficial" stimulant for my colon)all of the "avoids" on my Type O list.
I will be ordering the saliva secretor test soon as I feel with my severe medical conditions, it would probably behoove me to know my secretor status to go even deeper.
Since having deleted so many foods on a gluten-free diet, rice, potatoes, and cashew nuts were my staples. Lo and behold, POTATOES are my poison!!!I immediately stopped both of these and noticed my joint, muscle and bone pain diminished within a few days!!!Now, after a month, I feel better than I have in 25 years......I am overwhelmingly grateful for your knowledge and research.
I'm sure you get letters like this regularly, but I felt compelled to thank you personally. With deep respect and gratitude, Alice G
Alice, CONGRATULATIONS on the wonderful accomplishments you've made!!
While I'm not the author, I'm posting your message here so that the authors will see it. :-) I'm sure Peter will be thrilled that you've had such great results, and you are most kind to write and tell us!
Nice to feel you're no longer trying to dig the Panama Canal with a dessert spoon, eh? I'm grateful that you wrote, and I am proud to share your happiness. Enjoy your newfound health, Alice, and be prepared for little joyful surprises along the way. (Those are what we call the 'side-effects' of this diet, and they can pop up any time. ;-))
Since you did write to this particular column, I really should fuss at you for the coffee with creamer, but ... maybe next time! Do write again!! :-D
Supps 4 Kidz?

Hi Heidi, i'm not sure if i've asked you this before or not. i know i asked doc B. i tried to search but couldnt find it. i am anxious to know at what age i can start giving supps to kids? my one year old (Type A nonny) has weaned from breast feeding and is loving soy milk but does he now need immune enhancing help? what do you recommend i give him and how often and how much etc? i would really appreciate your help on this matter. take care, ros xoxo
Hallo, ros! Your bub will do fine on a little breast milk now and again, and pureeed foods 4 his type. I wouldn't add supplements at all until he is 4 years old. As long as the foods he is given are ideal, and his environment is conducive to his natural creative impulses, there's no need for supps unless he shows signs of illness.... which I think will be few and far between.
Bless you for doing so beautifully with your little guy! He must feel utterly loved! Take care, dear, and write again! :-D
ABO change? Estrogenic supps? Coconut oil? ..And more!
January 19th, 2002 , by admin
My friend's son ( 10 year old) had overgone bone marrow explantation, as he had leukemia. Once he was type A but now he is O. What should he eat now? Do the tissues in the body also change type with the time, and does it matters? Thank you in advance, Natalya.
Hello, Natalya ~ The genes which code for digestive secretions have not changed, so he should continue on the type A diet. If we receive new research on this matter, we will post it. Best wishes to you, and to the little boy and his family! :-)
Hi As a B+ (Secretor status unknown), about 80-90% compliant for 10 months, who is just starting with Chinese Bitters and Coptis to clean my liver, eventually working towards a gallbladder flush. Julie over at Sensible Health thinks I have estrogen dominance, and as such can't take ginseng - which contains plant estrogen. This means I can't take 3 of my ERYT B Specific supplements - Deflect, Cortigard & Nitricyle. What is your opinion on this? Thanks Louise
Hi, Louise! Julia may have more information for you, if you can describe the ingredients and proportions thereof in the supplements. She may be referring to taking ginseng separately and regularly. How did she determine your estrogen dominance? I think she's a wonderful healer, and I hope your cleansing goes beautifully! :-)
The TYPEbase Index has an item called Coconut Oil, which is a BIG avoid for all blood groups, which oil is it referring to, refined (from dried coconut) or Virgin (from fresh coconut)? Also for the O blood type there is no reason listed as to why it should be avoided. I have been doing some reading about Virgin Coconut Oil which is a Saturated fat classified as a Medium-chain fatty acid. It is high in lauric acid with antimicrobial properties. Medium-chain fatty acids are absorbed directly for quick energy; and contribute to the health of the immune system. So what's wrong with it? Jeanne
Greetings, Jeanne! Actually, type O nonsecretors are allowed coconut oil. I just checked TYPEbase 3, and that entry is correct.
The ABO-system research on coconut oil has resulted in its addition as OK for O nons only, so it may appear that we're erring on the side of caution for the other secretor/ABO groups at this time. It will be difficult to formulate a rating that takes into account the significant differences in raw product quality and manufacturing standards of the many heavily-marketed coconut oils on the market now. It's like trying to rate spirulina, :-D.
There is more information on coconut oil at the NutriBase link in the TYPEbase3 entry, found here.
For everyone except O nonsecretors, we happily recommend ghee ~ organic is best, and organic homemade even better. :-D
Hallo Heidi Just a short question - which protocol on this site do I use for flu. Is it the anti viral one? Thanks again for a wonderfull informative column. PS: When will the promised foto update take place? Eurika
Yes! Antiviral. Hi, Eurika! Not sure about the foto update... I haven't aged all that much since May 2002. ;-> When I get a scanner hooked up here, I'll revisit the idea. Very best wishes, dear, and I hope your flu is short-lived!! :-D
I am a O- nonnie and have been on the diet for about a year. Before that I was a vegan for 10 years. It has made such a difference in my energy & sense of well being. I still can't believe that I eat so much red meat! When I started the nonnie diet I lost about 10 lbs. which was fine but I really wasn't over weight. I am tall & after weight lost was 135. But now I am going through a stressful time in my life and have lost another 10 lbs. I really don't want to be that thin and am concerned. My question is, How do I gain some weight back on such a low carb diet? I really don't eat any grains except rice on occasion. I eat lots of nuts & dried fruit for snacks. I do stick pretty close to the nonnie diet. Thanks for your encouragement Heidi! Anna
Welcome, Anna! I know what you mean... after some time eating all they want on this diet, people very often come to me for help with holding on what weight they have left! :-D
First, I suggest muscle building ~ not only for healthy weight gain and maintenance, but as the custom-designed stress reliever for type O. Hard exercise is your perfect calming agent.
In addition, eat a smaller breakfast and build up an appetite for meals later in the day. Then, add a small rice protein powder shake an hour or so after your last meal of the day -- but at least two hours before bedtime -- made with some berries and/or pineapple, and some nutbutter, or whatever suits your fancy. North American Pharmacal has a Protein Powder 4 Type O, for your consideration.
Be sure your B vitamin and mineral intake is high when life is particularly challenging. These will support nervous system function and assist full digestion of the food you eat.
Your weight will normalize at a level your body prefers - sometimes an unexpectedly low level. I've been surprised to see my own weight hover insistently around 122 lbs., and I'm 5'9! So, do a little diet tweaking and muscle work, and supplement with B & mins as necessary ~ and trust that the result will be the best one for you. Thank you for writing, dear! :-)
Hi Heidi, This is Alia writing once again (Blood type A secretor). Today, I have a question in regards to regular table salt. We are all aware that sea salt is an acceptable ingredient for type "A's"; however, "salt" is not listed in the food database, nor in "Live Right", but "sea salt" is only listed as a neutral. There are some products in the HFS and commercial grocery store I shop at that I would like to purchase, but they contain salt. Up to this point I've avoided purchasing these items. This has limited my purchasing options when it comes to some items. For instance, the biggest obstable that I am facing is finding any sheep or goat cheese that does not contain salt; and I would like to start incorportaing goat/sheep cheese in my meals. Thus, my question to you is to receive the food rating for regular salt. Also, could you please enlighten me with what you know about "inulin"? It is an ingredient found in my Stevia extract. Thanks much in advance for your comments. -Alia
Hello, Alia! Nice to hear from you again!
Salt is fine for you. Full mineral sea salt (gray unrefined) is a much better product than commercial white salt, because sea salt isn't just processed concentrated sodium chloride.
Two points about salt:
(1) Regular grocery salt usually contains dextrose and/or other ingredients. Take a look at the label for avoids. Bet you didn't think SALT could contain corn syrup derivatives, eh? mighty tricky of them.
(2) A product's ingredient label should show these other additives if they used a commercial salt containing dextrose, etc. If in doubt, just get in touch with the manufacturer. A great deal of harm waltzes in dressed as "natural flavors."
I don't have much information on inulin. It is present in a wide variety of vegetables and fruits. It was listed in the formulations of the 4YourType Herbals (discontinued) for types A and AB. It is a prebiotic, with slight sweetness and is probably in your stevia extract to moderate the flavor and aid digestibility. At this time, of course, it has no rating. That said, I see no reason to avoid it. Unless it causes stomach upset, I think you'll find it does no harm at all. and that's the sum of my offerings on inulin! :-) Glad you dropped us a note, dear! take good care!! :-D
Greetings, and... hiatus

Hello, everyone!
Another wee hiatus, as I'll be short on time until Earth Day. ;->
See you on Thursday 4/22! and thanks as always for your loving presence!

Notes for Lorene and Susan! :-)
January 17th, 2002 , by admin
I. Wow! This took about 45 minutes to find a place to get a question out! I remembered your name because you did answer me over a year ago. I have been teaching and promoting the diet for a couple of years, but would appreciate a respnse to some, I believe, well written controversy from Macrobiotic source. I will try to copy and paste it, if this space will allow. If not, can you respond and perhaps I can send this in an email directly to you?
II. Have been able to paste this! sorry it is so long, but I am very helpful someone, maybe D'Adamo himself?, can respond to me with an equally convincing answer. Lorene
Hi, Lorene ~ Thank you for writing again! It's been more than two years, actually! I did manage to read all of the text you entered. I haven't posted it here in the column, not because of its enormous length nor because it is the work of someone else, but because everything I read in that text has been addressed by Peter over the past eight years... some of it repeatedly.
If you use the SEARCH function on the main page of this site (www.dadamo.com), and choose various key words from the newsgroup post you copied here, you will find everything you are looking for. Use, for example, the names of the various people the newsgroup participant is quoting. Or enter the term "animal" to find out how animal blood types key for entirely different characteristics ... as a preview, they do not determine digestive secretions, as they do in humans, for example.
I assure you that there is more than adequate information here to rebut the macrobiotic participant, if that is your desire. He's using some truly outdated and long-supervened material. It will take you some time to do the research and put it all together into a reply post, though ~ but if it seems important enough to you, by all means, please take advantage of the resources available on this site to do so.
As a friendly bit of advice: your reply to this guy would be a good exercise in fact-based writing, although it is unlikely to persuade folks whose beliefs are invested in the cites given in that post. While the post appears to be a collection of logical arguments, you will find the basis for its promulgation is emotion, not rationality. Not an uncommon thing! but uncommonly difficult to convert to a logical discussion. Best wishes to you, dear! :-}
I wrote sometime back last summer and I'm in good health now. My protein levels and blood work tested normal in all areas.
However, I have a question that I couldn't find answered anywhere on the search engines concerning why milk thistle is recommended for A blood types in LR4YT (i.e. family history of gallbladder & liver problems) but is not mentioned under A-blood type for Liver Support Procotocal of the Encyclopedia book? Just wondering. SusanF
Susan! Wow, it's been a while. It's great to hear you're in fine fettle. Did you ever find out if you're Lewis double-negative?
That's a great question about milk thistle, and I'm not sure why it was removed for type A and included for AB and O. However, for As with a concern over gallbladder and liver problems due to family history, two things: your diet is 5000% better (my estimate!) than that of any family member who wasn't using the ABO plans; and you might consider a yearly gallbladder flush as a harmless, cheap, painless and safe preventive measure against gallstones and liver congestion. Let me know if you need more details ~ and search around September 4-9 in this column of last year (try Twoeagle as a search term) for some good protocols and tips.
It's wonderful to hear from you, Susan, and I hope you and your husband are prospering! :-D
Soy Cheese ~ Type A Newbie ~ Emily has a Suggestion ..And more!
January 16th, 2002 , by admin
Hello Heidi, My how I miss your column when you take a day off!!!
Please can you tell me whether the soy cheese, recommended for type A, and presumably available in USA contains trans fats like the stuff I accidentally [by post] bought from a 'Health Store' in UK. If I had been able to read the label I wouldn't have gone near it! It also contains carageen and vinegar which I understand are A avoids. Many thanks in advance.
Here are the details: http://www.scheese.co.uk/information.htm Information Scheese is an authentic looking and tasting non-dairy, animal-free alternative to traditional cheese, suitable for anyone who is avoiding animal products in their diet. SCHEESE IS: * Suitable for vegans and vegetarians * Yeast free (all flavours except Cheshire style) * All ingredients sourced as grown non-GMO * Lactose free INGREDIENTS: * UV treated, filtered water * Hydrogenated rapeseed oil * Soybean concentrate (non GMO) * Soybean isolate (non GMO) * Spirit vinegar * Salt * Lactic acid (non animal, from glucose) * Natural & identical flavourings (non-animal) * Carrageenan NUTRITIONAL VALUES: Typical values for 100g of Scheese: * Energy 369 k cal * Protein 14.5 g * Carbohydrates 1.2 g * Fat 29 g (of which saturated 4.2 g) * Fibre 4.3 g * Sodium 3.2 g * Calcium 75 mg These are only approximate values (which fluctuate naturally with the ingredient qualities). We offer no guarantees as to their accuracy, nor do we recommend that they be referred to as any part of any controlled diet.
JoyceUK
Hi, Joyce! Any website I'd recommend for purchasing foods would list the ingredients of products. There's no way for us to know what is in something unless we can see that ingredient list.
Hydrogenated oil as a second ingredient isn't something I've seen in soy cheese here. Many do contain carrageenan, though.
"Soy cheese" in the food lists is something I'd like to remove, since it is a product -- meaning, it varies extraordinarily between manufacturers, and even between varieties made by any one company.
We can better serve everyone by listing only the whole foods tested for ABO/subtype/secretor/MM values, and then encourage folks to read the labels (in the store and/or on the makers' websites).
Soy cheese without avoids is a nice alternative for those who miss cheese, but it is admittedly difficult to find a soy cheese without avoids. Keep looking, Joyce, and just keep these thoughts in mind. Thanks for writing, dear! :-D
I have my credit card out to order supplements, but I have some problems. The woman on the phone said I should email you first.
1. I have tried to take multivitamins for years and I have found that vitamin C gives me colds. I thought I was crazy, but since, have found other people with the same problem, including the chief pharmacist at my local Longs pharmacy. Do I dare try the Pharmacal multi? Why would it be different? What should I do? Help!
2. I have ridged nails, have had my gall bladder removed because of calcium gallstones and have high anxiety. When I take calcium, I GET LEG CRAMPS, as if I am assimilating the magnesium, but not the calcium, setting off an imbalance. Help!
3. I am Type A- I prefer a vegetarian diet, but nuts and seeds give me herpes on my eyes. Help!
4. I have hypothyroidism, and am getting frequent adrenilin rushes on this diet. What is going on???
5. I don't see any information in any of the indexes in all of the D'Adamo Blood Type books for hormones (I am 57). Apparently you no longer offer the hormone test kit. Do I need a doctor's help to administer that kit?
6. My daughter and son have acne. This also is hard to kind in any of the indexes.
7. I have a limited income. What is the best way to work with this diet? I cannot afford to make too many mistaken purchases. Joan
Hello, Joan! I suggest for the time being that you do not begin taking vitamins and minerals which have been problematic for you in the past. First, the fundamental task for you is immune system regulation. That means, reducing the stress hormones in your system. I would immediately begin a yoga practice, and if you'd like to purchase one supplement that would help you in this task of modulating your immune response (and feeling a lot better), then buy some Cortiguard.
The diet is attempting to heal your thyroid, thus you may experience odd effects -- most people who start this plan find that any medications they were taking must be reduced or eliminated (under their doctor's supervision, of course).
If you search for the term 'acne' in the search form below, you'll find a number of columns which offer pointers on this problem.
For right now, I'd simply follow the diet carefully while absolutely eliminating the avoids. Put away any nuts or seeds which are troublesome now -- you will likely be able to re-introduce them once your immune system is stable. Yoga is your very best friend in this healing process! so please do commit to a daily or thrice-weekly yoga session, take Cortiguard daily in the late afternoon, and let me know how you are feeling in a couple of weeks. By treating the fundamental problem, you'll see a host of other maladies fade away. Bless you, and please do write again! ;-)
Good day Heidi and all! I read the column all the time and realized that a lot of people follow the diet, except, what I do not understand is that whenever I talk about it with people, they are not aware of it or do not believe it. Nobody I know follows it except for one person. So why is it so hard to find someone that follows it and agrees with me on it? Perhaps there should be a blood type dating service on the site! Hahaha! Well, I do not know how realistic this is but that is my opinion. It just seems that life would be so much easier if I had someone that follows it like me. If your partner does not agree with your lifestyle, then it cannot work you know! But I'm sure that one day, people will catch on more. It seems harder for men though to adhere to a diet. They worry less about their health and appearance. However, perhaps that is changing now, I notice it a lot more in men. So I do not have a question, but wrote in anyways to give you my thought of the day! Good luck to all! Emilie/(Emily)
Thanks, dear! I'm not sure what's involved in setting up an ABO-Singles site, but perhaps some enterprising soul or group would like to get one going?
You sound very much better, by the way!! take care, and I hope you're getting some spring warmth up there! :-D
I just got the two bottles of Polyflora A. Directions say two a day, 2X a day... Sound about right to you? I have a feeling that I have NO flora due to antibiotic overuse on a biblical scale my ENTIRE life, so I am looking to re-establish the 'lil guys fast! Should I take more? Less? Both bottles in a row? Wait a month between? Also... It doesn't say wether I should take them w/food or on an empty stomach... Morning, night, mid-day? Wondering about taking the 4 spaced out over the whole day too... Looking for the best advice, so I asked the best possible source! Thankyou for your 'Americans Singing' post. I was very moved and inspired... And thanks for being there to help along the way! Jim
Hi, Jim! For right now, I'd take two first thing in the morning, and two last thing at night. With plenty of water, of course. Polyflora is best taken on a regular basis, but once you're having no trouble with constipation at all, you can take just the two at night. No need to take a break.
I'm pleased you liked that column -- and I did get your Rockwood info, BTW. Just cogitating on where to go from here! Be well, and we'll talk soon! :-D
A few days ago in reading my Live Right book I noticed that goat cheese is neutral while goat milk is an avoid - the whey and all of that. What about goat yogurt? I do not think that I am going to like your answer, but I have to ask it any how. Joan (O secretor unknown)
Hi, Joan! Well... I'm afraid I'm about to give the answer you expected. :-} Among the cheeses, there are only a few which are OK for type O -- secretors only -- and goat cheese is among them. However, yogurt is an avoid, even made from the same milk used in (neutral) mozzarella. So goat yogurt should be considered an avoid, as well. I hope you'll still write to me! :-)
Hi Mom, Thanks very much for the 'articulation' of a basic problem that is now affecting us all, we Canadians (in our own way) as much as our American brothers and sisters.
This 'problem' is fundamentally a thought/belief one (that plays itself in everyday events both mine and others) and should be a philosophical one by nature. However, the root-source of this is not placing the emphasis on 'individual' action (as Americans are inclined).
Let us all delve a wee deeper into what is the 'nature' of reality itself - - heady stuff, eh? ALL reality is UNIQUE, SINGULAR. We humans have shiftd away from this and like to 'compare' stuff ... so we have invented language, (Anyone (human, that is) can say you have a dog, but to have Fifi is an experience!); to money; and (more recently) to political-philosophy where someone(probably Descartes) invented that the idea 'equal' also applies to us (humans) and our behavior. UNBRIDLED 'STUPIDITY' AT ITS WORST ... as far as I can tell.
The SOLUTION (which is daunting) is to accept resposibility for that uniquness and to celebrate it with all the gusto that is me. Sorry I am not-less-than-equal (nor more-than-equal) the word 'equal' simply does not make sense in the world filled with 'uniqueness'. The word 'equal' is strange because it allows us the 'out' of 'shifting the blame' to others. I could easily go on and on about this, but first I must eat (BTD of course)(:->) ! John McDonell
:-D I'm glad you enjoyed that article, son. It's a pesky probem ... till all of a sudden, it comes into the mind clear as sunlight. I'm of your view on how 'comparing stuff' became a focus of mind, and formed the kind of language we use. However, it is difficult for me to imagine action performed by a group while not being performed by any individual human being ~ maybe because I'm American? ;->
Your mention of the concept of equality reminded me of a great article on that subject ~ Roderick T. Long's Equality: The Unknown Ideal. I'm sure you'll enjoy his discussion of the concept ~~ and I join you in celebration, with gusto, dear!! :-D
Patches, Eyes, Bars and Coffee ~;-)
January 15th, 2002 , by admin
Hi Hiedi, Thanks for the advice about increasing stomach acid for this slim type O. Muchly appreciated. There was one thing I forgot to add though. I've recently been plagued with a number of circular fungal patches on my legs(nowhere else). These have only really started since I've been erfyt and I was wondering what these could be and how to get rid of them. Any ideas?. They are not itchy, have no discharge, and are about the size of a soft drink bottle cap.
Also, if you recall from my last email, I mentioned that I was a biliary, connective tissue constitution. This constitutional description comes from an iridology analysis. Do you know if the doctor has looked into the validity of combining iridology analysis and blood type in order to further fine tune the diet to the individual, or even whether he considers the practice of iridology valid at all. It's a bit of ask I know, but any info you have would be appreciated. George T.
Hello, George! If you have some good raw oil daily, like cold-pressed extra-virgin olive oil, and make sure to get a good serving of B vitamins from organ meats and/or nutritional yeast, those patches on your legs should disappear within a few days.
Yes, I noticed the iridological typing you mentioned. It's not a diagnostic that we have discussed much here, and while I do not know if it is used in Peter's practice, the blood type diet books don't refer to it ~ we focus on ABO and other polymorphisms determined through the blood and saliva tests. Hope this helps! and thank you for your note! :-)
Hi Heidi, I am sure that I already know the answer to this but by any chance have you found a protein bar that is actually good for B nonnies? My lifestyle can be a little hectic at times so I was wondering if you have any suggestions? Thanks! Nicole
Hey, Nicole! I haven't found a commercial brand that's good for Bs. However, at this point I'd be tempted to spend an hour in the kitchen some Saturday and make my own! Tell me what kind of bar flavor/texture/ingredients you'd like in general, and I'll come up with a couple of general recipe guidelines. I'm thinking that this kind of thing could be made like sheets of freezer cookies, and cut into squares or bars. It could be as simple as a combo of toasted cooked oatmeal or puffed rice, nuts and/or fruit, a capsule of PolyVite-B and Phytocal-B, spices as desired, some veg gly or nut butter to hold it together, and some kind of fondant for a coating (or not).
That's just my first gloss on how to do it. Cookies of this kind are simple to make, are very forgiving to the first-time baker, and you can do a month's supply in a snap. The shopping would be the hardest part! ;-D but you'd search longer to find a commercial product (and probably come up empty-handed), so I think we can save you time in the store, too!
Have you checked with the nonnie list? whole bunch of great chefs over there, from what I hear. Let me know if you're not a member and would like to join.
Companies like NAP agonize over getting the right formulas for bars because they have to first use all the best ingredients in the desired nutritional proportions, then figure out a process that will yield a product that withstands the horrors of shipping and storage and various heat and cold exposures, and stay fresh, and appeal to a wide market as well. It's darned near impossible, which is why the bars they've sold took so long to arrive and were ultimately both withdrawn. It's much easier for us! Let me know what you think! :-D
I have just bought the book 'Cook right for your type' and I am an AB Type. Regular coffee is listed as being beneficial, however whilst browsing on the site it was mentioned that coffee should be avoided. Which one is correct, should I or should I not avoid coffee??? Thanks. Rhona
Hello, Rhona ~ The latest information on food values can be found on this site by using the TYPEbase3 database. More on the food value changes between Cook Right and Live Right can be found on the Updates page. See the bottom of this column for reference areas you may want to explore. I hope this is helpful, and thanks for writing! :-)
Americans Singing
January 14th, 2002 , by adminHi Heidi: Thought you and the readers would like to know there is an excellent article in the April 2004 AARP Bulletin regarding fructose corn syrup, something we blood typers have known is a bad thing for a long time.
On the front cover it says "High Fructose Corn syrup: sweeter, cheaper - and deadlier" and the article is called "What's Worse Than Sugar". It goes into excellent explaination of how the US got into using this sweetner and gives examples of some foods that contain it.
One expert even says that the use coincides with the obesity epidemic in this country. It's a good article and one that you might want to read and pass along to friends and family.
Before long, I'm hoping that the public makes a stronger voice to rid our diets of these products as well as other things like wheat that are in everything as an additive. We might just become a healthier nation because of it, but the farmers are going to have to diversify what they grow in the future - maybe the government will finally start sanctioning organic farms!
Take care. Joyce
Dear Heidi, How are you? It has been awhile that since corresponding with you. My blood type/rh factor is "A" Positive, A1/A2 type is "A1", MN type is "MN", and secretor status is "secretor" per saliva sample and "DOUBLE LEWIS NEGATIVE"/LeA-LeB- per blood draw.
I just wanted to suggest that ALL newborn babies have their blood/rh factors typed; along with having their secretor statuses, A1/A2 types(for type A/AB babies), and MN types checked for and put on their birth certificates, on a national basis. COULD THIS BE FEASIBLE?
It could possibly help save lives, especially when it comes to badly needed blood during blood drives and shortages. Also, it could help with quicker medical diagnosises, if and when more of the medical community REALLY starts catching onto Dr. D'Adamo's research. What do you think? Please note.
So long and take care! God Bless You and Your Family! Marshal-Wichita KS
Dear Joyce & Marshal ~~ I am always happy to hear from you, because even in this little corner of plain text printing, I can see, hear and feel your strength, your morality, and your great good wishes for all of mankind -- you've shown your hearts to me, and you have blessed me and many others thereby. Like most of the people in this great country, you powerfully desire to create a world in which the terrible human cost of ignorance may be eliminated for once and all. And you start at home. And you work hard at it! You make your voices heard.
I often recommend political action, in hope that those who are inclined to take it will work from that angle. However, I personally stopped relying on such means many years ago. I discovered (granted, rather late in life!) that government interventions in private commerce are our enemy rather than our friend. The road I travelled to this discovery started at a point very far from -- actually absolutely diametrically oppposite to -- where I am now, and I daily kicked and struggled againt the things I learned, and I questioned everything, and kept studying, until I could no longer refute the conclusions staring me in the face.
Joyce, I am truly pleased AARP has published a solid article on the ubiquitous use of corn syrup. It's a great service to their readers! I wish it were otherwise, but I'm afraid that government action is not the answer to our dire situation with regard to food additives. Government itself redistributes massive wealth from average Americans to heavy-lobby industries and companies such as Monsanto to support research which may benefit the government -- not the civilian populace. The genetically-modified organisms created by such companies are carried to everyone else's fields because the wind and the honeybees cannot be regulated, nor would we survive for long if they could be. We cannot look to government to solve these problems. They created them in the first place, and it is not in their interests to break ties with powerful friends, nor to stop research which is useful to government in ways they will not publicize.
Marshal, I commend your idea! It would be wonderful if hospitals found Peter's research valuable enough that parents would be given a choice to have these tests done on their newborns. However, hospitals are constrained to obey the money-givers. Even now, hospitals are forcing parents into procedures and recording methods which are invasive of privacy, detrimental to the safety of the babies and repugnant to the parents' stated personal wishes and religious beliefs. Heck, we can't even get them to stop using dextrose in IV's! Most hospitals rely upon government funds, you see. That is how they come under an obligation to perform according to what the funding agencies say FIRST, and what the patient and parent want SECOND, if at all. Parents with firm views on such things as circumcision, DNA sampling, premature infant feeding, forced Cesarean delivery, forced vaccination, obligatory assignment of Social Security numbers to babies, just to name a few -- face a catfight with any number of insistent hospital personnel if the parents are to prevail.
So, rather than offer more options for testing newborns (and who will safeguard that data, and who will ensure it is not sold or shared with entities the parents would not approve of? Privacy "policies" shift and turn with the winds), I would first want to see hospitals operating on the basis that the customer, not the dead hand of the non-producers (government), is the first and final arbiter of what happens to the customer during her or his sojourn there.
Please understand that I know without doubt your hearts are 'in the right place,' and that you see problems so massive that no one man or woman can possibly hope to rectify them. In that, I agree! But I suggest that the private sector is the place to do this work -- that each of us should vote with our dollars for the best food available to us, that we talk to our friends and relatives, that we disseminate Peter's work far and wide, and be models for others, and enjoy the present moment in peace and good heart, as who knows the hour of his death? Don't let the grand troubles mar your beautiful spirits in any way. Most of all, just keep studying and learning, and know that your efforts make a difference, every day, and in the only way that really counts!
Today, appropriately enough, I read an account of medical researchers being terrorized against attending a conference because of its location. Who was the terrorist in this instance? By copyright terms, I'm including the entire article here:
Self-Ownership, Not State Ownership
Dear A-Letter Reader:
In February, the US Office of Foreign Assets Control wrote to hundreds
of US researchers scheduled to attend the 4th International Symposium on
Coma and Death in Havana, Cuba, warning that they faced "criminal and/or
civil penalties" if they attended the March meeting without a specific
license. No licenses were granted. Being good citizens, or afraid to
band together and stand up to the threat, none of them attended.
Sad. Say what you will about Castro, and I'm no admirer of the dictator,
he has made medical research a high priority in Cuba. Blocking American
researchers from symposiums there is a loss to us all.
Like most government programs, the 40 year US trade embargo with Cuba
has achieved almost the opposite of its purported purpose. It has failed
spectacularly in its basic goal of undermining support for Castro's
regime, and has given the dictator an easy way of explaining his failures.
Don't bother to ask why the US establishment continues this foolishness
when there is no evidence of the policy working. It's the wrong question.
Evidence of effectiveness has never been a criterion for continuation of
government policies (the war on drugs comes to mind). Like all official
policies, the embargo serves political ends, not the public good.
The more important question is, why do people swallow the concept that
their assets and their lives belong to government? Years ago, when I
informed my four-year old daughter that she belonged to me, she
instinctively challenged me. "You belong to you, daddy, and I belong to
me."
A four year old can see the obvious fallacy in the idea that one person
can own another, but after a decade or two of compulsory state
"education," this libertarian instinct is crushed and the citizenry
evolves into what H. L. Mencken so charmingly dubbed "boobus Americanus."
Docile and trained, it never occurs to most Americans to be outraged at
the idea that politicians and bureaucrats can control where they travel.
After all, boobus already accepts without question (among countless
other indignities) that government must be able to invade their privacy,
monitor their bank accounts, tell them what they should eat, drink,
smoke, and invest in, as well as confiscate whatever amount of their
income and assets it chooses.
Libertarian Murray Rothbard once said, "Boobus Americanus is doomed
to be boobus Americanus forevermore." Fortunately, thinking individuals
don't have to suffer the same fate. Individuals who value personal
freedom can still arrange their lives to retain ownership of themselves
and their assets. For instance, they can pursue options such as owning
their own business, investing internationally, even living overseas.
But it begins with a decision not to accept the idea that the state is
their rightful master.

In the course of reading and writing On the Diet, I often meet people who believe they are powerless over their lives. I feel for them SO strongly, and often feel inadequate to give them what I know would help more than anything! It seems to me that these folks just never had an opportunity to learn that they are the owners of their own lives and property, and that they are alive with the gift of choice and the power of self-determination. Perhaps this is the root of all our troubles ~ the idea that someone else, someone who "knows," someone who is an "expert" or who holds high office (therefore must know more than I do) is the only one who can fix the things that pain me, so MUST do so as a SERVICE to me! Government's the usual place people look for relief. Probably because so much of their hard-earned money is swept away to government coffers, and the vaunted 'benefits' are so slim and so difficult to secure. Walter Burien has actually established that all government entities are already more than self-supporting through investment income accruing to them. His is a complex website, but then, the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report which the Fed, each State, and every municipality publishes is an unfamiliar subject to most folks. Wild, astonishing -- but true.
It occurs to me that right about now, I should make clear to everyone that I am not anti-American. Americans have a long history of questioning government, which questioning is in a slow but steady revival at the moment. Further, I am pro-man, pro-woman, and pro-child. I am pro-human, pro-creature, pro-Earth, and pro-just-about-everything-alive-on-Earth-and-beyond. Most of all, I absolutely support every being's right to make life decisions without coercion or interference so long as they do no harm to others, and the right to protect oneself and one's dependents and associates from wrongdoers. Among other rights. ;-> Each human being and every creature and leaf and stone is a treasure of Life to me, and the closer to natural law they may tread, the happier I am. I think that's mighty American, in its root, and best, sense. ;-D
Good friends of mine have done years of research on such matters, and have prepared a presentation on relevant laws which you may find useful and empowering in your own situation. If you have broadband Internet access (cable, T1, DSL), you can review the preliminary work here. It's less than an hour in length. Apologies to those who use a dialup access service, but if you have a couple of hours to spend waiting for the screens to load, you, too, can view the presentation. Just click the 'Watch the Presentation' link on the right side of the page, and patiently w a i t. ;-)
I've spent the last five years investigating this and other matters relevant to personal resources, and I believe this information is tremendously important to everyone in this country, as it has a direct and personal impact on each person's ability to choose better-quality food, supplements, and health care.
As far as I've been able to understand it, health starts in your own mind. It starts with what you think, and proceeds by what you do. In a way, it's really simpler than any of us thought. You know who the bad guys are -- don't do business with them. You know what the good stuff is -- grow it or buy it. Don't hurt others, and don't take what ain't yours, and protect yourself to the best of your ability from those who prefer deception, theft and destruction. I'll be here to lend a hand. :-D
Bless you all in every way and time!
Love,
Heidi
Who says we ain't happy?? :-D
January 13th, 2002 , by admin
Hi Heidi, Thanks to Linda for the heads up on 5-HTP. One month's usage had no effect on me, good or ill, so it's history.
I'm doing "The Five Tibetan Rites." They've been simultaneously invigorating and relaxing. Leave it to the Tibetans to think up such an enigmatic exercise routine.
Something strange happened to me the day after my previous email to you. My craving for chocolate suddenly disappeared! Also, my daily espresso is no longer an absolute necessity. I still enjoy espresso and chocolate but I, very suddenly, lost my obsessive craving for them.
I had started taking a B complex supplement a few days before the change. Could the extra B vitamins account for the loss of cravings? Thanks again to you and Linda. Paul
Could extra B vitamins eliminate cravings? Most certainly, Paul! Amazing what a little this 'n' that can do, eh? Linda's note was most welcome, and is just a sample of the magnificent contributions of yon brilliant B contributors. :-)
I'm very pleased that you're free of the cravings, and especially that you're enjoying the Five Rites. Have fun with it all!! :-D
Hi again Heidi ! I am back with a rash-report.
On behalf of my husband and myself I would like to thank you for your great advice. No avoid meat and no bad fats has made a lot of difference.
The spots are already looking better. Almost gone in fact ! And just in a few days. Amazing ! I will still let him eat the supps you recommended once we get them in the mail. Thanks again ! /Carina (and Anders)
Wonderful! I'm so pleased Anders is losing that rash ~ I hope he's inspired to explore the A diet further... Thank you MOST kindly for the "rash report," and I'm really happy for you both, Carina! :-D
Dear Heidi, Just a couple of thoughts about the GB flush comments by Dianne.
After talking to Julie, Chinese herbalist, I faithfully took her GCG formula for 2 weeks, which is supposed to soften gallstones so the gallbladder rids itself of possible packed stones. I did a flush before the formula came, took the GCG for 2 weeks, then did a second flush.
First flush I used epsom salts (vile tasting for sure)etc. and produced a few good sized green stones. Second flush produced smaller particles and brownish in color. I ate homemade veg. soup with no fat, drank carrot juice and fruit juices before the flushes (following the schedule recommended). I noticed after the second flush, I didn't go to the bathroom until later in the day, then several times.
I have gotten rid of a constant upper backache. I'm taking 1/4th tsp of Chinese bitters (recommended by Julie) in half glass of water, on an empty stomach first thing in the morn., which helps the liver clean itself. Then I drink a BIG cup of green tea.
The thing I find most difficult is being patient. Afraid I want things done quickly and efficiently and it doesn't happen that easily. The thyroid balancing will really try my patience but I'm determined to follow thru with it.
I've always stayed away from dairy products (caused terrible stomach aches)and am slowly introducing them into my diet, especially yogurt. (Being B sec ) It's really difficult to find some without corn syrup. Luckily the HFS has two kinds without it. It appears I have to feel worse for a while to REALLY get better.
I've learned so much from letters on this web sight and am so grateful, thank you. Thank you for your comments on food combining. I've read lots on it and for myself find eating fruit by itself works for me. We eat salads, steamed veggies/meat together and eat all starches alone. I have noticed a difference and think these combos digests easier for us. (We never need antacids etc.) Cutting out all wheat has really helped us with weight loss.
Thank you, Heidi, for your quick responses.(Dab that iodine and bring on the yogurt!!) Doris
~~;-D Doris, thank you so much for "reporting in" on your progress with the gallbladder flushes. No more backache -- HOORAH!! :-D
I recall a doctor saying that it only takes 1/12th the time to resolve a problem as it took to create it in the first place. I think you're speeding along beautifully!! Take heart as the improvements come along, day by day. I've always found simple, steady improvements are the most marvelous and inspiring things. Every night as you go to bed, you can feel grateful that things will be even better tomorrow. ;-> A dear mentor of mine once said that life is all about "something to look forward to." That's something we can all create for ourselves, it's right within our grasp ~ and to know it and live it is such a greatly empowering state of mind.
You've shown a wonderful determination, and you'll reap all the rewards of your persistence and patience. enjoy the process, and joyfully expect the best results!! Best wishes, dear! :-D
First Flush Report! Bee Jelly? Iodine Kind? ..And more!
January 12th, 2002 , by admin
Hello my dear Heidi!! Although I continue to read your column every day, it's been many, many months since I've written since it's taken me this long to finally do the gall bladder flush! I wasn't able to do it before I left for Spain back in August (although my sincere gratitude for your "rush flush" column anyway) and with my very busy schedule I just didn't have two whole days with nothing else going on until now.
I followed your 1/4/04 flush recipe with the following adaptations: - no apple juice or malic acid (decided to do the flush last minute and Whole Foods didn't have malic acid) - I ate only sweet potatoes, a carrot/squash puree and a small amount of brown rice in the morning/afternoon (stopping by 2pm) - I drank the epsom salt mixtures VERY cold with some freshly squeezed lemon juice (it didn't really taste bad at all that way) - I used freshly juiced (from my juicer) organic ruby grapefruit with the olive oil (which again, did not taste bad at all) The epsom salt drinks seemed to make me pretty bloated.
After the second half of the olive oil/juice mixture I immediately laid down on my right side (although several other flush sites recommended lying on your back I followed your advice instead) but didn't feel any of the internal movement I had expected and was even able to fall right asleep. I didn't have any bowel movements upon waking so I had the epsom salt mixture and went back to bed. Woke up again for the last epsom salt drink, still no bowel movement and went back to bed again. It took a couple of hours even after that before anything "flushed" so to speak and when it did, all I got we a couple of teeny, tiny, green clumps that were soft and mushy, not hard.
Later trips to the bathroom yielded only a few more of these very small green clumps. The remainder of the day I remained bloated and then developed a headache - perhaps from the lack of protein (I ate very lightly still refraining from protein and fat as recommended). Since I normally keep my carbohydrates to a bare minimum, two days of nothing but was a real shock to my system!
Well now it's the next day and I'm still bloated with a bit of that headache remaining. I can't decide if my flush was a success and who knows when another free weekend will present itself to do a repeat (with the malic acid, of course). Will this bloating go away soon? Does the fact that I only had small, soft green blobs mean that I don't have any real stones accumulated? I could really use some of that wonderfully warm Heidi reassurance! Thanks as always!! Dianne in LA, O+ nonnie
Hiya, Dianne! Nice to hear from you! I hope your trip was spectacular!
Well, that bloating (and the headache) is the result of slow-moving stuff in the intestine. What was released during the flush is hanging around rather than rushing out. As to the cause of the slowdown, believe it or not, I nominate the brown rice & veg combo. ;-> If you can do some juicing and add the soaked ground flaxseed in the morning for the next week, and do some walking or running (always worked nicely for me), it should bring you back to normal purty quick-like.
For your next flush, I suggest using fruit juices and veg juices only for the day of (or day before and day of), and after, the flush. For Os, if there is any sticky substance like grain sitting in the front of the line, it can tend to somewhat obstruct the swift elimination of the contents of the digestive tract.
But HEY! You did pass stones, and on the next try you should see bigger & better results, LOL. It's funny that you didn't mind the taste of the Epsom salts, which I must say I find ... how to describe it... vile? revolting? ... "challenging," let's say. Your relative indifference to the taste may be a sign you're low in magnesium generally (check your diet & supps and see if this rings a bell). A mag deficiency would also contribute to slow transit time after the flush. MORE ES 4 YOU! ;-D
That said, congratulations on doing your first flush! It's always much easier the second time. Do write and let me know how you feel after a few days, OK?
:-D
This question was recently asked in the January 2004 questions however no answer was given and I feel the question was an important one. I am a Type A non secretor and want to know if Royal Bee Jelly is good for my as well as other blood types. Will this be researched as the product information on this would open more doors on health. Thanks Jenaire
Hi, Jenaire ~ I don't know a thing about bee jelly except that, like bee pollen, sensitive individuals have reported allergic reactions to it. We have no rating for it, so until testing is done, there's not much I can offer there. Just exercise caution with it, as with all unrated foods & supps. :-D
Heidi, I'm an O (secretor unknown). I am on 75 MCG of Synthroid for my thyroid. I wanted to try the Iodine test. The first place that I went to find the Iodine was the Giant (grocery store), but they did not stock it. I then went to a Rite Aid and found Iodine Tincture, R.S.P. (Iodine 2%, Alcohol 47%, Sodium Iodine 2.4% and purified water). Will this work? What is the Lugol Iodine that Dorsa is talking about? Thank you, Joan
Hello, Joan! Yes, that regular old iodine you found is just fine for the purpose. It's what most people use. Lugol's iodine is 85% distilled water, 10% potassium iodine and 5% crystalline iodine, but plain drugstore iodine works perfectly for the little 'iodine test.' :-)
Dear Heidi, Not a diet question, just a greeting from a daily reader: It's about this time of year that I wish Jane Roberts had overcome her health challenges, and had written Seth's _The Christ Book_. My way of wishing you a Happy Easter, Heidi. You are a treasure. Love, Kathleen B+ (Se) p.s. I miss your Seth quotes! : ) Kathleen
Hello, darlin'! Yes, I've been thinking of her lately, too. I miss her. I wish she'd preferred 'letting go' and staying with us for a while longer. :-} At least we know that whatever she's up to at the moment, it's not boring. :-D
Here you go ~~ from The Way Toward Health:

The Proberry 3 syrup & Proberry Caps are confusing, if I have a chest cold which would I use? Sandra
Hey there, Sandra ~ If you have a chest cold, I suggest quercetin, C, and Respiratone, as well as basic ABO vitamins and minerals. Proberry 3, both the syrup and the caps, are antivirals, protective against infection. Hope that clears up the confusion! and I do hope you feel better SOON! :-)
Hi, Heidi. Before I ask this question, please know that I have checked your archives and read the books thoroughly. I also follow this site regularly.. I just can't get one part straight. It is about food combining.
I have read somewhere on this site or in one of the books that Dr. D'Adamo has said that food combining wasn't necessary because adhering to BTD takes care of digestive issues. However, I have noticed that you have recommended it (I have gone to the site that you direct to so that I could get a feel for the practice of food combining) and I remember Dr. D'Adamo recommending that someone could do some "basic food combining" in order to solve some health/ diet issue..
I have to say that I have read what it is, but I have a hard time buying into it. Dr. Weil, whom I also read, says, "But from a medical point of view, there really is no reason to avoid any food combination except those that you find distasteful or physically unsettling. The human body is built to handle whatever foods you consume, regardless of whether you eat them separately or together." This seems to make the most sense to me (I think highly of Dr. Weil, even if he doesn't support the BTD).
I can't get this whole aspect straight in my mind. On one hand, it appears that Dr. D'Adamo doesn't believe that you need to food combine, on the other had, I believe that he has, at least occassionally, recommended it. What I have read about it seems so far fetched to me. It also seems like a royal pain in the patootie, especially the approach to eating fruit. Can you help me understand this once and for all, Heidi?!? Thanks SO much. Rachel-the-blogger
Halloo, Rachel ~ For the ABO diets, actually there's no hard & fast rule on what to eat with what, or without what. In his practice, Peter found a percentage of patients did better separating grains and sugars from meats and other high-protein items -- particularly, by not eating large quantities of grain AFTER eating a full portion of meat. Others found that doing the 40-30-30 thing in each meal kept their blood sugar steady like nothing else.
Most didn't notice a difference one way or the other, so you'll hear us suggest one thing to one person, and another to someone else -- it's all based on what his or her body likes best.
If you find it makes no difference in your comfort and speed of digestion, then eat fruit whenever and in whatever combination you prefer. It's a personal choice, and experimentation will allow you to figure out what works best for you. Especially when embarking upon a no-grain/sugar existence, it's less tasking to let other foods take their places as they will. Once the grain/sugar-free habit is effortless, then you can think about tweaking elsewhere -- only if you find it benefits you! Blessings, and stay shiny!
:-D
Types O, A & B ~ various Qs! :-)
January 11th, 2002 , by admin
Greetings to you, Heidi, from Craig (non-secreting type O negative....and MM to boot!) here in 'La Belle France'! Hoping this finds you well and enjoying life.
The craving coffee/chocolate posting from Ruth (O secretor) of Wednesday 24 March definitely rang some bells with me. In fact, to sum it up, I would say that I experience this phenomenon - but in reverse! OK, I know I know I know...we O types are not meant to have coffee anyway :-( ....but, hey, I've never been one to be averse to a little experimentation from time to time ;-) And an experience experienced from a personal standpoint has to impact many times more than a few pages read from a textbook.
Anyway, what this O-nonnie guinea pig has discovered is the following; Coffee drunk first thing in the morning is bad news! Just one cup of percolated will cause the stomach to start going crazy for food, with a sensation of exaggerated hunger. This seems to then set off a blood sugar see-saw, and by the afternoon, no matter how well I have eaten to compensate during the interim period, I will (to varying degrees) be experiencing cravings. Sometimes they can be alleviated by chocolate (in large amounts! Like about half a pound of the stuff!). Other times they are insatiable! Like anything I eat is not possibly going to stop me from wanting something else - something which I cannot identify.
On the converse, afternoon coffee seems to have a relaxing and calming effect and will virtually ensure that I stay crave-free for the rest of the day. So, no chocolate needed there! I wouldn't say that it's an addiction in the true sense (I am way way better than I used to be!), as it's extremely occasional that I test this coffee phenomenon, but there does seem to be this connection.
Oh, while I'm here, just a quick question for you - you're always impressing the need for water water water. What do you think about sparkling water? I mean at the expense of still water? It's rated beneficial for all type-O's :-) But I was just wanting to clarify in what quantity, since here it is not recommended to drink the tap water (shame, as I quite like the high-mineral taste of it) so I buy all my H2O in bottles. It's not expensive, and I find San Pellegrino I have taken to like a duck to.....errrrm, water!??
It has a very satisfying and pleasant bubbling consistency, not too harsh, but it's become my mainstay and I get through about 1.5 litres per day. Normal water seems to have lost its appeal! I just wanted to be reassured, and my main concern was would the acidic carbon dioxide adversely affect the tooth enamel (have never had a filling yet)? If so, then hopefully all my green tea and avocados will go someway towards protecting! Many thanks, Heidi!
Allo, Craig! Mineral water is superb for you, and while the higher-dissolved-solids varieties are far better than old standy Pellegrino, you may consider your daily intake HB and hip hip hoorah! It's the holy grail of ancient Os, a fine source of minwater is.
Fear not for yer enamel. If you haven't yet been subjected to dental fillings, it's not going to start now. {{Lucky blighter!}} ~:-D And thanks for the coffee news ~ you're doing beautifully, so just don't stop. ;-D Keep shining, dear. :->
Dear Heidi, thanks for the really good work you are doing. I know there is so much information in the previous columns and I am searching through them as well, but now I am really in a hurry so I have to send you a note.
A couple of days ago we found out that my mother in law had a tumor in the intestinal colon. The doctors thought it was best to operate at once although they thought it might be benign. Today the operation was and it seems it might have spread to the liver, ie very bad. This is all I know at the moment.
I think my mother in law is bloodgroup A, but I will find out. I have talked with my in laws a lot about the bloodgroup and they know I follow it, but they are not really interested to change so much. I hope me and my husband can change this.
I will buy the cancer book, but as we live in Sweden and my in laws in Germany the delivery time is quite long. I have the encyclopedia and will check there as well. We have some Heallix here and I am thinking about ordering more. Do you think it can help?
More, I think meditation and visualization might be very helpful. The sister of my husband was killed by a drunk driver just 2 years ago at the age of 27 so this might have contributed to the cancer I think. I really don't want to burden you with all this but if you have a few quick tips on the most important things to "take" I would be very grateful. Thanks/ Marie
Hello, Marie! Anything she is willing to do or take among the BTD resources would be helpful to her. Heallix is definitely a good idea, and look into the Cancer, Immune and Liver protocols. I also suggest reviewing the suggested therapies at the Minnesota Wellness Directory alt cancer site. It has recently been split into three pages, so browse through the first, then look for the 'page two' link near the bottom and continue. As you read through the pages, read the associated links and make note of items or services you believe might benefit your mother-in-law, and which could be gotten to her or by her, and which she might agree to implement. Graviola and ABM (mushrooms) are two items which come immediately to mind.
You are quite correct about a stress-relief practice. If she will not change her diet, of course everything is made more difficult. However, if she does want to live, she may surprise you by what she is willing to do. Bless her, and you -- please let me know what she decides. Thank you for writing, Marie! :-)
I'm an O (secretor unknown) and lose weight easily, and believe that I also have low stomach acid.
I have recently started erfyt and have had virtually immediate results in the reduction of eczema, rheumatoid athritis and mucus reduction (significant) as a result of removing wheat and other avoids.
Whether or not I am on the diet I do not gain weight. By rights, I should be gaining weight, retaining fluids etc (when not on the diet), and this is why I think my stomach acid is low. I generally have no sensations of hunger but eat large quantities of food.
I'm sure I have a problem most would love. I fit the lean O group profile even when I'm not on the diet. I have attempted to gain weight, but don't. Any ideas reference the low stomach acid????. If it is any help, I am of mediteranean background and have a biliary connective tissue constitution. George T.
Welcome, George! Yes, that's right -- lots of readers are cocking their heads and saying, "Eats anything he wants and doesn't gain weight, Poor Fellow!" ;-D
Yet, there are plenty of people who wish they could gain weight -- most of us don't realize how difficult a thing it is for these folks... it's a slower process than losing weight on the proper diet.
The two keys for you are adequate protein (and plenty of vegetables, especially dark green veg), and steady muscle-building exercise. This means using heavy weights, slow movement and few repetitions. Two sets of three or four perfect reps is the maximum you should do per muscle group. Take two days off, then do it again. I am not an exercise expert, but there are lots to choose from, so research that area a bit -- you'll learn quickly how to design a workout program that will fit your needs perfectly.
Your stomach acid will respond to the foods given to it to digest. I think you'll find you will have no trouble with that aspect at all.
As time goes on, you may find yourself eating less. Don't be concerned -- it will take some time, but once your body has all the nutrients it needs to establish a good weight and healthy functioning, it will require less to maintain that state.
Best wishes, George, and do write again! enjoy!! :-D
Thank you, Heidi. Sorry for the nitricycle typo in my last email. I put a spot of lugol iodine on my inner thigh and it was completely gone this morning.
My temp was lower this morn, 93.5 from 94.3. I think my thyroid may be causing all my symptoms. I will do the exercise, dab the iodine, take the temp and let you know in a couple of weeks. Am I to understand the iodine will absorb until the body is balanced? Perhaps it isn't that simple. Thank you again, so very much. Doris
Hi, Doris! Yes, the iodine will keep disappearing within 24 hours, unless and until it is not so much needed. Keep up with seaweeds, use good gray sea salt, and have some fish while you're doing the iodine test/treatment. I look forward to hearing from you in two weeks! Best wishes, dear! :-)

Newbie-B ~ Thyroid (and lots else) Success Story! :-)
January 9th, 2002 , by admin
Symptoms: One year ago I was feeling depressed, tired, and was overweight, did little exercise, etc.(Born 7-15-41, female, blood type B negative, secretor). Needed cataract surgeries both eyes. Had pink eye and auto immune symptoms(growths in nose and ear). Hadn't seen doctors in almost 40 years.
Started seeing doctors in Omaha, told them I had been irradiated for tonsils as a child.
Found your books. Started following "the plan" and exercising in October, 2003.
Had MRI and CT scans, and ultrasound biopsies. Diagnosis and Recommendations: "Suspicious" diagnosis for one nodule on one thyroid gland.
Went to see world expert in Chicago for thyroid cancer caused by childhood irradiation. Biopsied again in Chicago in March, 2004: all 3 nodules on thyroid glands are now benign, plus salivary gland tumor is benign.
The doctor advises I should take Synthroid. We want to see the latest biopsy reports before making a decision, but I am fully inclined to keep on diet and continue exercising and NOT take Synthroid or any hormone pill.
He also advises thyroidectomy, but is not insisting on it because of benign biopsies and thyroid functioning normally.
What I Do Following the Plan: I walk ten plus miles a week. Had the cataract surgeries, and no longer need to wear glasses. I waited until all auto immune symptoms went away before the eye surgeries. I have lost 17 pounds, and feel VERY much better. I also take the B mineral supplements, 2 pills daily, and 1 tablespoon flaxseed oil and 1 tablespoon lecithin. Eat fresh fish a couple of times a week, and 2 or 3 vegetables plus a big salad at evening meals. I don't eat avoid foods. It has made a world of difference.
Question: What do you think about shutting down my thyroid glands? I would continue to be followed with regular ultrasounds and biopsies, traveling to Chicago from Omaha. Thank you so much--all of you--for your remarkable work and breakthrough in understanding health and nutrition. We are spreading the word as much as possible. Kira Gale
Welcome, Kira Gale! You have travelled quite a road, and come to a wonderful place in your life. I've rarely seen such a succinct account of an astonishing story of healing. Congratulations, and WELL DONE!!
I find it sad (but to be expected) that your doctor advises you to take Synthroid, even though your condition is improving in ways he never could have predicted and certainly could not have produced with his drugs or his surgeries. I find it even sadder that he would advise removal of your thyroid when the biopsies are clean and the thyroid is functioning just as it should. Maybe instead of "even sadder," I should say "unbelievably shocking."
My first suggestion is to continue doing what you've done for the past 6 months -- it's working! I certainly would not consider impairing the function of a perfectly healthy organ by taking Synthroid -- or having a perfectly healthy organ removed.
You appear to have a key to healing that, apparently, "world experts" are quite unaware of. Use it, and enjoy it! Save yourself the fees. Make a mental note to have another doctor's appointment in 40 years or so -- if you really feel the need of it. :->
I am just truly happy for all you have achieved for yourself. I salute your balanced approach and clear thinking. And I'm very grateful for your kind words & your support for this health system. Bless you, and do write again! :-D
Type B ~ Hypothyroid?
January 8th, 2002 , by admin
Dear Heidi, Just finished the 2nd gallbladder flush after faithfully using Julia's GCGS for 2 weeks.
My upper back feels much better but I still don't feel balanced. I came across the self Thyroid test, (I'm from the "goiter belt of Midwest) and found my basil AM temp at 94.2. When I've gone in for annual chck it's been 97 so perhaps I'm hypothyroid even tho the blood tests showed normal.
My question is: could the "glandular" from HFS be used and can the thyroid heal itself in time? Dr. Bronner wrote if the digestive part of the body is OK so will the thyroid. I've been 98% compliant on BTD and am taking Deflect, cortiguard and nytricine along with basic B supplements. Should I wait a few more weeks to see if the body balances itself or start a glandular and see if things work better from that end?
Thank you so much for your suggestions. Doris
Hello, Doris! Yes, absolutely - the thyroid can and does change and readjust.
Keep taking your basal morning temperature for a couple of weeks, and average out the results to find your average bmt. Check your vitamin B intake, and make sure it is optimal. You may need a bit more to help your thyroid return to normal if your average bmt remains low.
I suggest using visualization and balancing exercises, such as the Tibetan 5 Rites and/or practicing t'ai chi or another yogic or martial art form.
You can also do the 'iodine test' using plain iodine (make sure it is NOT mercurochrome) to paint a quarter-sized patch on your inner thigh. If the patch disappears in less than 24 hours, paint another patch in a different spot on your thigh and see if that one can stick it out for 24 hours. This little trick is both a diagnostic (if the patch doesn't last a day, your body is low on iodine) and a treatment (via the iodine absorbed through the skin).
If after a month of doing these things, your average bmt remains too low, a low dosage of a HFS glandular may help turn things around - but I suggest incorporating the above changes first before starting glandulars.
I hope this helps, and please do let me know how it's going for you! :-D

Heidi, Regarding Suzanna with sciatica/hip pain: When I was having pain in my neck/shoulders and also hip I had been seeing a chiropractor and getting some relief, but having to go and get adjusted every 3-4 weeks in order to feel o.k.
After 10 years of this, I changed chiropractors to one who specializes in correcting the atlas. I learned that if the atlas is not aligned properly, the entire spine has to adjust in order to accomodate the weight of the head. This causes muscle pain and tension all throughout the body.
After two years I am pain free and my adjustments have been holding. I have only had to be adjusted twice in the past year, and the most recent one was right after having dental work done which put my atlas out of alignment.
You suggested to Suzanna that posture may be the cause, and this very well may be due to an atlas that is out of alignment. I learned that your atlas can be out of alignment from falls, bumps on the head, dental work, or any trauma to the head, neck area, and can occur during childhood. Later in adult life the aches and pains become noticeable.
The treatment was painless and effortless , but I had muscle pain during the recovery time. The adjustment is done by an ultrasonic pulse behind the ear, and there are no physical manipulations (no cracking of the spine and neck as most chiropractors do) It was well worth it, as I now don't have to go for those frequent chiropractor adjustments anymore.
I know several people who have been relieved from hip/sciatic pain from treatment from the same chiropractor I go to. Also I learned that sleeping on a standard pillow can cause hip pain due to poor sleeping posture. I got a pillow from my chiropractor that supports the neck and allows the head to relax in proper position during sleeping.
I hope Suzanna finds relief, as I know how that puts a damper on your quality of life. Another Suzanna ( B nonsecretor)
Thank you so much for sharing your experience, Suzanna! Atlas adjustments are one of the more recent additions to the chiropractic toolkit, along with Network Chiro and many others -- and I fully support this kind of treatment (which is fundamentally naturopathic in nature and result). Please do investigate and use these kinds of therapies, folks -- they are non-invasive, relatively inexpensive, and surprisingly powerful in relieving distress and supporting robust health.
There are many schools of chiropractic and closely related practices which are unbelievably beneficial to humans and other critters -- so look around, and vote with your dollars for the practitioner who is most instrumental in restoring and enlivening your time here on Earth! If our mission here is to CREATE, we'd better get on the stick and maximize our creative potential, in whatever way we see clear to do. :->
? can the bloodtype pill supplements be made in tea form? ? I hav a frend who is religious against any (Pill). bhop
Hi there, Brian! nice to hear from you! Tell me which supplements you are thinking of for your friend, and I'll help you figure out how to make a nice tea out of it all. :-)
According to Dr. D'Adamo's E-News email, Dr. Bronner HAS LEFT THE BUILDING!
Here's the text from Peter: Clinic Corner: ------------------ Dr. Bronner Handwerger ('Ask Doc Bron') has completed his two-year residency at the D'Adamo Clinic and is now headed into private practice. Dr. Handwerger is a brilliant physician and was well liked and respected by the patients. I am certain that he will go on to a stellar career in private practice. Dr. Handwerger now joins an illustrious group of physicians who have completed residencies with my clinic. He will rank among the best of them.
Anyway, I was surprized because I had taken the opportunity to be his patient. Ah well! I wish him the best! Lynne
Ah! Guess it's time I signed up for the emailed newsletter, eh? I'm sad I never met Bronner before he went his way rejoicing, but I'm sure he's well on the path to a brilliant career! and thanks again for the heads-up, Lynne!
:-D
Hi Heidi, I am back again! I spoke to Docter Bronner about the synthroid and he said I should keep taking it as it is replacing my own thyroid. And it will take time for it to heal. My dosage is not that strong, at .075. Perhaps, I am one of those severe cases that needs medication, for now anyways. Perhaps after it heals completely, I will be able to get off the drugs. I have a couple questions though. Is there enough folic acid in essene bread (2 slices daily) to meet the required amount in one's diet? Is it absolutely necessary to eat grains in life? Or can we live without them? When is the body ready to have a menstrual cycle? Does it really have to do with how much body fat % we have? Or can we be at 12% and still have them? I am at 15 and still do not have them? I would not like to go higher, do I have to? Or will my body start up only by eating the right nutrients it needs? Is excercising every day excessive? I feel I have to for now because of my extremely slow thyroid and metabolism. And I feel better that way. Is that why my period is not coming back? Is it possible to excercise too much? Thank-you, you are great to us all! Emily
Hello, Emily! Nice to see you back!
Do supplement with folic acid during this time. You probably need a little extra from food and supps to help replace what was missing before.
It is certainly not necessary to eat grains if you are type O. I do very nicely without them, and I can't remember the last time I ate grain.
Let your body relax, and release it from concerns about when it will menstruate. It will do so when it decides to, in its wisdom. Trust that wisdom, and let everything happen in its own right time. This can be freeing for you, because truly you do not have to think or worry about any of it. The less worrying you do, the quicker the healing can perform itself without intrustion. Weird, but true! :-D
Daily exercise is wonderful for type Os, so long as you feel good and energized after your cool-down. If you feel better exercising every day, do it! :-D
You sound really centered and calm, Emily! You've done a spectacular job so far -- keep reminding yourself of how far you've come and that you'll just keep getting better, because that's the way of things! IT REALLY IS!!!! take care, and write again, dear! :-D
Heidi – I would like some help with the best way to use Deflect ‘O’ Lectin Blocker.
My husband and I (both O) eat 100% ‘O’ compliant with 50% beneficial foods when we eat at home. During a week we eat one or two meals out and they tend to have some avoids in them. As a rule we have advance notice of these meals. My husband has severe digestive problems. One of these avoid meals will require him to take some of his medication.
I would like to see if the Deflect ‘O’ Lectin Blocker could take the place of the medication. He is not good at taking pills on a daily basis and a lot of the bloggers just use them after an avoid meal. Would it help if he took them at breakfast before the avoid meal, at the avoid meal and breakfast the next morning?
I have one other Deflect ‘O’ Lectin Blocker question. Does it help with weight loss (one of my goals) and how? What would you recommend as the best way to take it? Thank you for your time, Joan
Hi, Joan! Welcome!!
Deflect DOES help with weight loss, because it aids in the elimination of cells whose insulin receptors are damaged, as well as diverting harmful lectins in the digestive tract. You can take it with meals, or between meals, and/or before bedtime with plenty of water. It is not a 'fat burner;' our fat burner is EXERCISE!! but it is a wonderful aid in maintaining and enhancing the growth of healthy tissue throughout the body.
I suggest that if your husband is willing to risk eating avoids, that he take two capsules of Deflect before and after the dubious meals. Deflect works on those foods which are avoids due to lectins. If he's eating stuff which will irritate and/or inflame his digestive tract or flare up arthritis or other serious conditions, he may want to supplement with quercetin and other supplements specific to his condition.
Not knowing what his medication is, I can't say whether one or another avoid meal will require him to take it -- or whether drugless options are available. Eating avoids is trouble for all of us. Deflect minimizes the consequences, but it's not a license to err. I hope this helps, dear! and I extend my best wishes to you and your family!! :-)
Dear and Heidi and all, I just wanted to write a note of deepest thanks to you all. I was overwhelmed by all the helpful advice - really touched me.
I have to say that I am in the care of a top rheumatologist and gastroenterologist - the rheumy said that if everything comes back normal - (right now they know I have an over acidic oesophagus with lesions in my stomach and pretty aggressive IBS), then he has recommended I go see John Sarno in New York!!
I have ordered the book. I was amazed when I read the post on him. It would not surprise me if my problem was instigated by my emotions. I am an typical A-type personality - perfectionist - who finds it hard to relax.
How wonderful it would be to exercise normally again - it has been 10 years of this pain. Interestingly enough - it got really bad when I started my very stressful job!! Anyway - thanks again everyone, for all the wonderful input. Heidi - one quick question - (had to get another one in!!) Do you think that bromelain would irritate my acidity problem? I think that I have an acid problem now, as a result of the steroids. Do you think that green tea would be a problem too? Is it too acidic? Also - if you have any tips on IBS - would be great. I have the type with severe constipation - can't seem to resolve it. I find that slippery elm and magnesium help - but not too sure if Citrucel helps or hinders. I have started juicing and am sticking closely to the diet. Also I take the Polyflora O. Thanks so much for everything Suz
Hello, Suz! I think you've hit on the underlying reason for the high acid production (aside from the steroids) and the IBS. Until the book arrives, I suggest just being very careful with your diet -- and if anything seems to flare up the IBS or the pain, discontinue it for now. Try to 'relax into yourself' whenever you feel pressured or worried. Stand back a bit and listen to what your thoughts habitually tell you ~ let them go by & just watch them. Your body is ready to heal itself. Very warmest wishes to you, and write again when you like! :-D
Rachel here again, Heidi! Thanks SO much for the rant about pet food - it's a "pet" peeve of mine! Please, if you feel so inclined, post this link on feeding Bones And Raw Food (BARF). So many people have misconceptions about pet diets. This is the link that was in my blog:
http://www.homevet.com/petcare/foodbook.html
this looks like another good site:
http://www.njboxers.com/faqs.htm#switch
Of course, googling it brings up a lot of information on BARF, both pro and con. Thanks. Rachel
:-D All righty, and on that note I'll steer the column back to the discussions of human health stuff. :-) Thanks, Rachel ~ and give your little chihuahua critters a pat for me! Best wishes! :-)

The D'Adamo Clinic is accepting applications for a nursing position. I thought I'd note it here, in case OTD readers hadn't noticed this link on the home page that went up yesterday. This is a stellar opportunity, and one that appears very, very rarely. It won't be open for long, so follow the application procedures if you're interested & qualified. Best of luck to all! :-D
Heidi - This is for Paul, the B+ sec unknown who is taking 5HTP for depression from (April 5th column). A couple of years ago on the old board, there was quite a discussion about B's using 5HTP. Dr D had a warning for B's using the supplement. I had tried it for a couple months - I think it was to control cravings or something, and I got quite depressed using it. The cloud lifted very shortly after discontinuing the supplement. So, this may not be for Paul. -Linda
Thank you for this, Linda! Paul's mention of using 5HTP bugged me because I recalled an Ask Dr. D. column posted in late 2000 saying it wasn't recommended for type B -- but I couldn't find that post, so I thought I was imagining things.
and addressed myself to the questions Paul asked instead. :-} Paul, listen up! Your fellow Bs are on the ball! :-D thanks again, dear!
Hi again Heidi, I am back with a question about my husband, type A+ (secretor status unknown). He believes in the BTD but is still eating red meat and products containing milk products such as salami. He is eating his vitamins and minerals + probiotic.
I am trying to make him aware of the importance of avoiding sugar in jams and biscuits like Digestives (if you have that in the States). The only candy he eats is dark chocolate on saturdays. He also exercises (for instance running) a couple a times a week and does qi gong every day. That is, I think he is doing a lot to stay healty.
Anyway for a couple of months now he has had a rash on both his arms (starting above his wrists and ending below the armpits). It is red and itching, especially at night and early in the morning. Putting aloe vera or ionised silver on the spots does not seem to help at all. Do you have any suggestions on what else to try ? Thanks a lot ! Carina
Hello, Carina! Without knowing a great deal more detail about your husband's diet and environment, the rash appears to be a reaction to bad fats.
It will be difficult for him to heal the rash until he removes from his diet the (saturated) meat fats, oils/nuts/seeds on the avoid list, and any hydrogenated oils (which hide everywhere in comercial products such as cookies, breads, cakes). It will help him to immediately start supplementing with fresh olive oil, flax oil, and walnut oil, along with 5-7 servings of fresh vegetables daily.
This is the kind of rash in type A that is also made worse by over-exercise. A daily qi-gong session is PLENTY (believe me, I know!). If he would like to add a workout, let it be a casual stroll on his running-grounds -- using that time to explore and expand his awareness of the natural world.
The first week I ever spent in London (at the age of 16) was fueled by pints of that marvelous milk most Americans have never tasted (sweet as God, 30% cream the bottle) and chocolate digestives (dark was my favorite, too). We don't have such things Stateside except in special import shops, but oh, how I remember. :-> I dimly remember the brain fog and exhaustion, too, but upon my subsequent discovery of fish restaurants and Paki, I recovered to triumph later! :-D
One last thing ~ give him Methyl B Plus or some other methylcobalamin formulation, every morning ~ it will help resolve the skin condition. The addition of Cortiguard, if only one capsule in the late afternoon, will help as well. Best wishes to you both, Carina! :-)
hi heidi just a quickie, what's happened to dr bron?his website seems to have gone completely and no reference to him as a contact on anyones page.what has happened to the fellow? thanks debs
Hi, Debs! Well, Bronner's a dynamo in the clinic these days, and if you've never run a naturopathic medical facility, it may be difficult to imagine what he tasks himself with every day (and night). I hear his patients are very happy! He, too, is married with kids, so add it all up and you get a very busy boy. We still have the naturopathy news from the clinic staff in that column space, for which I'm grateful. Hope this helps, debs! :-)
Suzanna's post on sciatica stimulated numerous responses among sympathetic readers. I could have said it "touched a nerve," but you know how rigorously I maintain my personal ban on puns. ;->
Sciatica - left side is a sodium deficiency, right side is a potassium deficiency. The fastest way to elevate one's electrolyte level is green drinks like HARMONIA. Hope this helps. thomas
Thank you for the reminder, thomas! I hope addressing a full spectrum of mineral supplementation will get rid of it on both Suz's sides! SUZ!: - sea salt for the left side, bananas for the right!
Hi there, Heidi! I want to share a recent experience regarding sciatica, that could probably help Susanna and other sufferers of back pains and/or sciatica (well, actually all muscular pains).
I have been suffering from lower back pain, pain in my left hip and along my leg and foot. This has been the situation since last May. I have been to orthopedist, neurologist, homeopath/manual therapist since then. I have been taking bromelain and lately dewil's claw, the latter being more effective in relieving the pain (I'm type O).
Dear Heidi, I will understand if you do not believe me. But I had this experience and it seems to be working. So let me tell you how it all started:
One day, I thought I was sick of the shape of my study and I decided to move the furniture around to give the room a new shape. I did it while no one was around! I moved the bookshelves, TV set, computer, sofa, rugs and kilims, in essence I did 11 out of 10 things not to be done by people with sciatica or back pain! (I also have a grade 3 tear in my left knee meniscus cartilage and a grade 1 tear in my right one)
When all was over, I felt so energetic, for the first time after all those months FREE OF PAIN! I have then thought there must be an explanation of this. I have made a search on the web and come across several books on mind-body connection and the healing power of human brain/mind. I have picked up John E. Sarno's (M.D.) "Mind Over Back Pain" and "Mindbody Prescription". The pain in my hip and leg were gone before I was halfway through the first book.
When I finished the book, I took my bike and went cycling for around an hour, something I was forbidden to do since last May. Since that day I have read the other book too, and now I am able to overcome the pains whenever they occur.
John E. Sarno states some facts based on research and statistics. - There are a lot of people with herniated discs or other structural abnormalities who have never suffered back pain or sciatica. - There are many people who have no structural abnormalities but suffering from back pain and/or sciatica. - The Homo Sapiens has a healing power that will relieve any pain or heal any injury within a given time.
Yet, back pain and the like are persistent. So they are not (at least in overwhelming majority of cases) triggered by structural abnormalities. What he concluded is the cause of the pain could be "mild oxygen deprivation" and that was why some activities or physical treatments could alleviate the pain, as they improved the blood flow to the area, hence the oxygen flow. He takes the Freudian approach and says that the repressed rage in our unconscious is the main culprit. The brain, in an effort to stop the unconscious bursting into the conscious, deceives us and sends orders to restrict the flow of blood to some tissues, which in turn develop pain. He has well presented cases in his books, and speaks of people who have healed themselves just upon reading the books. I appear to be an example.
I have stopped taking dewil's claw, I am back to my normal activities, exercising, running, cycling. All I have to do is to listen to "my mind" to find out whether I have a certain rage for something/someone. I don't even have to remove the rage, just recognising the cause cuts down pain immediately.
It is as if one's saying to his/her brain "you deceiver, I've gotcha". Well Heidi, this is the story. It looks amazing, but it worked for me. I hope it works for Susanna and others too. You know what? Among the people I happen to know with back pain, type O appears to be more common. Wouldn't one think that the overindulgence of type O's in being "goodists" could have been contributing to their unconscious rage? I am sorry for having to write so long but I appreciate you reading so far. take care, Yaman
Yaman, You da Man! (complimentary slang expression!!) Your observations are superb.
I wish everyone with chronic pain would buy these books. Actually, I wish EVERYONE would buy them. Sarno has knowledge from which anyone can benefit if s/he so desires.
You did a magnificent job summing up some very complex ideas, as well as illustrating your day-to-day experience with them. Kudos to you, and thank you for writing, Yaman! write more! :-D
Hi, Heidi! I am Rachel the blogger, and I wanted to thank you SO much for all of your hard work. WOW! I am so very impressed with the time and care that you put into your column.
Regarding the sciatica e.mail today, I wanted to put this forth: I have had on again, off again sciatica pain for several years, but it became steady and miserable last fall.
I discovered 2 things that made all of the difference.
1) I was taking a bunch of dance classes. Over the holidays, when there were no classes, the sciatica nearly disappeared. It became clear that the actual movements required in dance class (especially the specific way that you have to hold yourself and stretch in ballet) were one of the biggest culprits with respect to my sciatica pain.
I am sure that your reader has already looked into their exercise routine (or lack of it), but there might be something in their daily life that is aggrivating the condition. Something as simple as "flopping" into the car can do it.
2) This is the biggie: if I eat any - ANY - corn syrup my sciatica flares up immediately. Certain sugars - corn syrup being the main one for me, clearly cause this reaction. I ate a handful of gummy bears yesterday and found myself rubbing my lower back and hip 5 minutes later and miserable from the pinching pain.
I would suggest taking a really close look at the sugars that he or she is consuming and trying to eliminate all of them for about a week. Try putting them back in one at a time, and see if there is a reaction. Thanks again, Rachel-the blogger
Excellent points, Rachel! Suz is an O-nonsecretor, and like you O secretor folks, she's prone to inflammation. I have an unproven theory that Os also lose structural integrity (and incur joint and spinal trouble) when muscular & ligamental vitality lags behind the optimal. More to follow!
OT: In reading Rachel's blog, I came across an issue that I've tippy-toed into in this column, but have tried to limit in discussion because it actually doesn't belong here and if the doors were flung open to it, I'd be wandering even further from my remit here than usual. Namely, pet food. What to feed Bowzer and Pawz?
With the coming of spring in the northern hemisphere, I'm reminded of the biological imperative all creatures feel to go out and eat spring goodies. I want all creatures, human and other, to be free from poisoning in this season of cleansing and renewal.
So:
I see so many crippled animals every day in my neighborhood. Hugely obese, with distended bellies, swollen and disfigured joints, dogs who need help just to stand up. Kittens and pups with cancer. They didn't get that way from some rare disease or traumatic injury. They lost their health and entered a world of pain because of what their human ""caretakers"" FED to them.
From the page Rachel linked, "Food Pets Die For:"
In case you're thinking that's reactionary nonsense, here is a news report on the grease industry. Replace the word 'fat' with 'transfat source extraordinnaire.' Would you drink exhausted fry grease from Burger King? If not, would you ingest the stuff they ""process"" out of it, which is actually a polymer(plastic) and not a food anymore? That's what YOUR PETS ARE EATING, folks! And worse, unimaginable as it seems. Read carefully. It tells you exactly what "sourced from restaurant grease" means.
Grease, the New Industry
Here's a brief excerpt:
. . . .
. . . .
http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/world/8305985.htm
[Emphasis in red is mine.]
Please, please, PLEASE, folks -- if you feel any affection at all for the animals you care for, DO NOT FEED THEM COMMERCIAL ""PET FOOD."" At the VERY least, please call the company who makes the feed you use, and FIND OUT WHERE THE OIL IN IT COMES FROM. I mean, FIND OUT, ask them where and who they get it from and what the chemical components of that "oil" are, and don't take waffling for an answer. If you've been poisoning your animal companions for years, today you can begin to do otherwise. Today is all anyone has.
We human individuals have every right to destroy ourselves with rotten diet, lousy attitudes, cancerous habits and self-serving ignorance, but that right ends where it harms another creature who has no choice in the matter and must depend on OUR judgment for its life and good health. Fail yourself if you wish, but do not fail the creatures dependent upon you. If caring well for animals is too heavy a burden in whatever way, do yourself a favor and find better homes for them. Don't neglectfully feed your animals into a living Hell.
Here ends the rant for today. *:-}
~ Sciatica ~
January 5th, 2002 , by admin
Dear Heidi, I have been going through a tough time recently health wise. I have been suffering from really painful sciatic nerve/muscle pain in my left hip - really for a number of years. It got really bad in December and so I decided to figure out what is going on.
I have had multiple MRIs and have just finished a batch of intestinal tests like colonoscopy etc. as I have digestive problems as well. I am waiting for all the results. Dr. D'Adamo diagnosed me a few years ago with IBS. The rheumatologist was convinced I have a type of inflammatory arthritis but the MRI came back totally clear. I do not have the results from the Gastroenterologist.
I have just come off a month of prednisone ( very low dose ) - and am on a low dose of an anti-inflammatory called Bextra. I am hoping they will figure out my hip pain problem - it is near impossible for me to exercise - I am only 34 and am an O non-secretor - really benefit from exercise.
The medication I am on makes me very constipated and bloated but it allows me to do some exercise and have less pain. I also have rosacea and my skin breaks out horribly if I eat any kind of carb or sugar (even too much fruit) - on the anti-inflammatory my skin is clear.
Is it possible to get bad joint pain and rosacea from an unbalanced digestive system? I know that when I do the blood type diet, my skin is clear and I am not bloated - still have constipation problems and my hip is still painful. Any ideas what could be going on? Sorry this is so long! Thanks very much Suzanna
Hello, Suzanna ~ I'm sorry you're having such a rough time!
If your MRI is clear, there are a number of ways to look at the sciatica. It's possible that your posture can be improved in order to relieve the pressure on the nerves -- there are some good tips on this page, particularly the link to the exercise page. Do only those movements which don't stimulate the pain -- that sounds elementary, but it's worth the reminder! ;-) Do you sit or stand for most of the day?
Reflexology and acupuncture are two other effective treatments. There is also an experimental treatment called Neurotopic Injection, but it appears that double-blind studies may still be in progress. NI delivers tiny amounts of saline right into the muscle tissue near where the sciatic nerves enter the spinal column.
Which leads us to the next possibility -- dehydration. Are you doing the electrolyte-loading technique (1/2 oz of water per lb of bodyweight daily, with lemon squeeze or salt pinch added)? SO much back trouble is caused by dehydration alone that this simple technique can clear a number of problems on its own (not to mention its effects on the skin and the digestion).
Natural anti-inflammatory agents like quercetin, in combination with bromelain, can be used freely to soothe rosacea and inflammation of many kinds. Manganese supplementation boosts the stability of weak ligaments.
I certainly suggest a twice-daily juicing schedule, and a large raw salad daily to get elimination moving along. You might also benefit from a gallbladder flush, as it aids digestion and tends to clear the skin and various pains arising in the back.
Let me know if any of this rings a bell, and if you have any questions. Take good care, dear! I hope it's all cleared up ASAP! :-)

Just a quick word of caution...when using a neti pot, I found it difficult to get the water to the right temperature. If it is too cold it is iritating and if it is too hot it can burn the sinuses! I think mixing 1 cup of tap water with 1 cup of almost boiling water works pretty well to get a good temperature. With pollen from spring and fall, a neti pot works wonders! Lynne
I find that if the water feels warm but not hot to my hand, it's just hot enough to pour into the pot. It cools a bit there. And I always use either spring water or filtered water. Thanks, Lynne.
I just returned from an almost three week trip to Guatemala in which I spent a full week in a Guatemalan family home where I got the inevitable "traveler's diarrhea" about five days into the trip. I took immodium and threw up a few times and then felt better.
However, I am back and my digestion is still not right - cramping, diarrhea and then constipation. I would like to try to beat this without excessive drugs and tests. Any suggestions other than the garlic, cayenne, and ginger tablets that I am taking several times a day with parsely tablets to keep the garlic smell away?
Also, the food in Guatemala is not great for an O - little meat, no leafy greens, lots of corn, potatoes, cheese, black beans. I was able to totally avoid wheat, but would like to hear what might be helpful to get my system back into gear as I felt great before I left. The country is beautiful, the people are amazing, and I would not have missed it for anything - even to avoid the present discomfort. I have the letin blocker for o's, but do not know how to use it after the fact, and have some heallix on order. Thanks for any help you can offer. -- melinda
PolyFlora-O is what you need to return your digestive colony to normal -- at the therapeutic level for two weeks, then continuing at the lower dosage. Deflect-O can start cleaning up the residual damaged cells, so I would take one, three times daily, with lots of water between meals.
Glad you enjoyed your trip, and returned safely! :-)
Dear Heidi, I wrote a while ago asking about the changes in the arthritis protocols - specifically to do with the use of glucosamine which seems to have been dropped in the current website information.Perhaps you haven't replied yet because you are waiting to recommend the new arthritis book? I am currently finding that a niggling hip pain which has recently reappeared in my life seems to be controlled with thrice daily cod liver oil capsules (1000mg x 3) There is a much fancier salmon oil one now in the health shop, and also a combined product with several of the A protocols, but these tend to be more expensive. All the best, Jenny A2 sec.(Oz)
I notice that the arthritis protocols on line have changed a bit from the 2002 Encyclopedia, in particular that chondroitin and glucosamine have disappeared. Would the online protocols represent the latest developments? I have been lucky enough to find a natural remedy in my health food shop which combines many of the on line A arthritis protocols and it appears to be working, along with the diet of course. A further question: is Green Drink (Harmonica deluxe) basically green tea? I don't know how to purchase the NAP goods in Australia so have to make do with what I can approximate. Very best wishes, Jenny (Oz)]
Hello, Jenny! The very few & far between errors in the Encyclopedia are being addressed in the Updates database and in the Protocols online.
One of the resources available to us here is the product database. If you go to the Store, hit "search," and enter Harmonia, for example, you'll be given a page with a link that says "More info." Hit that one. There you will see all the ingredients of the product. Makes it a snap to check for any item to which you might be sensitive, and figure out your own formulas if you're not able to order the product itself.
Thanks for writing, dear! :-)
Hi Heidi, I'm writing for Dana, Type O, who wrote to you about depression. My daughter, who is also type O, was suffering from many symptoms of mild depression. I took her to our naturopathic doctor and she recommended 5-HTP, an omega 3 supplement, and extra B vitamins. Exercise, as you also mentioned, is so important. But now that several months have passed, I feel certain that the 5-HTP is what has made the difference for my daughter. It's a very safe, nonprescription, naturally occuring substance that is a precursor for tryptophan, the amino acid that our brains use to make serotonin. I hope this info is helpful to Dana. Dr. Michael Murray, N.D. wrote a book titled simply 5-HTP (I think) which may be in the public library system in her area. This book is very informative. Cheers, Kathryn
Thanks, Kathryn ~ I would have mentioned both 5-HTP and Rhodiola to Dana, if she had clearly expressed a need for natural antidepressants. It appeared that her co-workers were the ones who noted Dana's mood changes, while she herself felt fine... but I'll wait to hear back from her to confirm, and thank you for the note! :-)
Hey heidi. Thanks so much for the response and advice. It's amazing you care so much for people you've never even met. A testament to your quality.
I think I actually figured out the prob... SOY. Soy milk, and tofu to be specific... I think I'm okay with tempeh, and miso... I think... Never tried Natto, but I will if I can find some. Any other A's out there that have a huge problem digesting/eliminating soy??
Thanks be to Janet for the remedy she supplied... If eliminating certain soy products for a month doesn't do it, you bet I'll be enjoying some of that brew! maybe rice or almond milk... If only I could find some w/o safflower oil or vegetable gums!
How many grams of animal/egg/bean/legume/nut/seed protien should I be consuming a day?? 20 grams? 100? Never could figure this one out. Would it vary based on secretor status? I am 6'1, 175lbs, 22 yrs. Thanks again and bless you!!
Hello, Jim! Many, many people have trouble digesting soy at first. Feel free to eliminate the non-fermented forms as you are doing, and continue with tempeh and miso. They're higher-quality food forms anyway, due to the process used in making them.
Both rice and almond milk are pretty easy to make at home, if you don't find clean commercial versions. Search back through this column, using 'milk' for a search term, and pick up tips & websites.
We don't work in grams here, so I can't help much there. I would add around 1/3 to the portion sizes listed in Live Right, since you're fairly tall and active.
One thing I missed in your reply -- the stress-relief part? It makes a huge difference in one's digestion. I asked a couple of times about how that was going, but I've forgotten if you told me. Thanks, dear! :-)
Dear Heidi, I have recently become pregnant, and am concerned about my fish intake, particularly tuna, do to potential mercury contamination. Though I knew that fresh tuna should be avoided, I also read that canned tuna shouldn't be a problem. Though Dr. D'Dadamo recommends avoiding tuna during pregnancy, he does refer specifically to 'fresh tuna' as the type to be avoided. Do you know if canned tuna is sufficiently different from the fresh to be allowed, or should I not eat it as well? Thanks so much for your help, Caroline
Hello, Caroline! Congratulations on your pregnancy!
The book you need is Eat Right 4 Your Baby -- it's available in the Store here, and other spots online and in bookstores.
Commercial canned tuna is tested for mercury content, but if you want to be on the safest side, fresh fish of other kinds would do you & your baby more good.
It's a personal choice, and I know you'll make the right one for your family. Very best wishes, and do write again! :-)
Hello! I'm a type A and I know that black tea is an avoid, green tea is beneficial, but what about white tea? I've recently seen that the Republic of Tea has a brand of white tea. They say it comes from a specific bloom and is rare (and expensive!). Do you have any blood type info on it? Also, I'm excited about The Blood Type Diet coming to e-diets.com. Do you know when that'll actually happen? Thankyou so much for your time and help, I don't know what I'd do without this site! Amy
Hi, Amy! We have no rating for white tea as yet. If it is added, it will appear in the TYPEbase3 database -- a search for 'tea' would find it then. For now, it can be considered an unknown, and used as a neutral by those who are in good health -- but be on the lookout for adverse reactions when using unknowns. ;-)
And I don't know when the BTD will be integrated with e-diets, but it's a great development and I share your excitement! Thank you for your message! :-D
Hi Heidi, I wrote you about prolonged use of probiotics but I have since determined that it is okay to take them. I just turned 40 and I have ERFMT (Type A+) for eight months now and I have been doing great. A recent mammogram showed possible branching calcification. I will need a biopsy. I am scheduled to see a breast specialist 4/21. In the meantime, I started taking Quercetin and Helix Plus. I drink plenty of green tea and I also take Vitamin C, E, a multi-mineral, a prenatal vitamin and folic acid. I cannot find Burdock Root Tea.
I noticed the anti-cancer proctocol calls for 4 weeks on, the 4 weeks off. Then what? Do you repeat it indefinitely? I appreciate your help. Thanks, Dawn
Hello, Dawn ~ The protocols can be repeated as needed. People who use them preventively do repeat them regularly, while others recovering from or resolving disease conditions may repeat them now and again, if at all, when they're satisfied with their progress.
I must have missed the "prolonged use of probiotics" part of your last question -- I was under the impression you found a good dosage for yourself, and probiotics are a good thing to take regularly. :-} Are you still taking them?
Please let me know how you do -- and you may want to review the Minnesota Wellness pages on alternative cancer treatments -- it is a mish-mash of material, and anything listed there should be checked out thoroughly before using it, but there are some helpful protocols and strategies for everyone.
Bless you, Dawn, and please keep in touch! :-D
Hi Heidi: I have a quick question. What is recommended for stretch marks? I have had two children but also am losing weight on my abs and there are stretch marks there. Is there anything that is natural, safe and non-harsh that is recommended by the BTD? Thanks, Joyce
For stretch marks: good oils, exercise, electrolytes (like water with lemon or salt added), Deflect, and minerals. As the skin benefits from the diet & the exercise, it will heal & regain its original shape -- then the stretch marks will fade. Best wishes, Joyce! :-)
Kia Ora from N.Z. Thankyou so much for such a quick response to my Dandelion Coffee question. I am enjoying it guilt free! I am an O.
I cannot find any way to get my secretor staus tested here , even thru'the lewis blood test. So... because I notice that spelt flour increases my cravings and weight, may I assume I am a non-secretor and go with that? Is it a healthier option for anyone in doubt to assume non-secretor status than secretor as a precautionary measure? I'd appreciate your opinion.
I had my gall-bladder removed when I was 19, (forty years ago), was a vegetarian for 30 years, and decided to include digestive enzymes in my BTD regime. I would love to check out the enzymes with you. They are made by Health Nuts and contain, in order, Protease, Amylase, Lipase, Cellulase, Sucrase, Maltase, Lactase, Bromelain Ionic minerals w/alfalfa(15 mg) I only know the last is an avoid, so they have been sitting in the cupboard waiting for an informed opinion, but are not yet past their expiry date.
I have two ongoing conditions that seem to me to oppose each other. Heart disease, seriously so before eating according to blood type. Now only labile blood pressure remains. It easily goes up to 210/110, and just as easily drops to 140/86, with no easily identified trigger. My general health is markedly improved on BTD and my medications drastically reduced. I would love to be off them entirely.
The other is recurring Gout, which increases with my meat intake. I have found a good natural gout remedy, produced by Smiths, containing Yucca stalk ( i was relieved to read Peter saying that the medicinal extract Yucca is an okay for O, plus, Milk Thistle, garlic, artichoke, turmeric. All sounds okay? But I would so much prefer to be confidently gout-free without supplements. Any suggestions for stabilising a balance would be great. Whew that was very long winded. Thankyou for the service you provide, I tap in one search and end up spending my entire lunch break browsing. Marni
Hi, Marni -- Thank you for the reminder about this question. I searched all through the archives for it, too, as I could have sworn I answered it.
OK, here goes! If you're in the position that you cannot find your secretor status, use the food lists in the Food, Beverage and Supplement Lists mentioned at the bottom of this page. They are designed for people who don't know if they're secretors or nons.
The enzyme combo you have is OK except for the alfalfa, as you noted -- I'd say go ahead and use them up, but find a product without avoids for the next time round. And for the gout prepraration -- it's best not to take milk thistle indefinitely except under medical supervision for specific conditions.
Have you looked into the Cardiovascular and Metabolic Enhancement protocols on this site? And for gout, have you tried black cherry juice? It has a great history of effectiveness, and hey -- it's food. ;-) One tablespoon daily with each meal. See what you think. :-D
Hi Heidi, I absolutely enjoy your column and read it every day. I am a 29-year-old O+ woman (secretor status unknown). I am about 15-20 pounds overweight, and I have had psoriasis since the age of three, sometimes in very small patches on my elbows, other times (especially in the winter) I have a few more spots on my arms and legs. I have noticed that cutting out the wheat has been especially beneficial for my skin.
I also suffer from bruxism (grinding my teeth in my sleep) that subsides somewhat (to my knowledge) when I get regular exercise.
The real complication is that I was diagnosed with mononucleosis in September. After giving myself recovery time from work for 2 + weeks and taking it easy with other activities for about 2 months, I went on my way with duties at work and the like.
Afterwards my immune system was weak, as I expected it to be. As an elementary school teacher I am constantly coming in contact with all kinds of germs. I seemed to catch colds easily and was experiencing a reoccurring sore throat every few days, sometimes everyday. I started the BTD in January to boost my immunity, lose weight and clear up my skin. It seemed to help but the sore throats still came back.
After more blood tests I have found out that I still have mono, 7 months later.
My question is this. What is the best, most practical way for me to approach the O diet? My main objective is to get rid of the mono. Are my problems related (weak immune system)? Are there specific supplements that would be helpful? I know that vigorous exercise is beneficial but it takes a toll on me. I went walking/running a few days ago and felt totally wiped out the next day. I have Eat Right/ Cook Right/ and Live Right and I’ve read them all from cover to cover. I would just like to know how I can make the BTD the most effective for me in my current condition. Thank you, Heidi for all that you do. Sincerely, Nicole
Dear Nicole ~ Please have a look at the Immune Enhancing protocol on the pulldown menus at the top of this page.
The classic treatment for mononucleosis is powerful antibiotics and complete rest for a number of weeks. I had it once, and went on a four-day meditation retreat two days after being diagnosed (very conscientious of me, eh? I wasn't aware at that time how infectious mono is!). The retreat consisted of meditating, eating, three walks daily, and sleeping. When I returned, my doctor nearly fell out of his white coat when he couldn't find any trace of the problem. So, at least in my case, the deep rest provided by frequent meditation was enough to allow my body to do what it needed to do.
I would also add Heallix daily. You will need plenty of sleep, probably twice what you're getting now. If you have a meditation practice or can learn one, now's the time. Meditation is unbelievably effective in resolving immune system deficiencies.
I agree with you that strenuous exercise while you have mono is a no-no. Boost the fresh vegetables, especially mineral-rich foods of all kinds, and get adequate protein and plenty of water every day. Please let me know how you do! :-)
Heidi, I'm a B+ (secretor status = unknown) on the BTD for exactly one year. After an initial period of extremely bad constipation, I've experienced dramatic health improvements. I've lost 45 pounds, 40 points on my Cholesterol count, and even lost some gray hair! I eat only neutrals and beneficials supplementing my diet with a B complex, methyl B12, 5htp, and fish oil.
I need your advice regarding several concerns. I have difficulty with motivation. Call it inertia, low level depression, or just a lack of get up and go. Just started the 5HTP maybe that will help in time.
The second issue is an addiction to dark chocolate that began soon after I got into the BTD. Lastly, I have a problem with memory, specifically recall ability. I would appreciate any suggestions you might have. You have been a great help to me this first year on BTD. Thanks alot. Paul
Greetings, Paul! Nice successes! :-)
It sounds like you could boost your mineral intake. Magnesium, particularly, but a good all-round ABO-specific mineral like Phytocal-B would change your outlook and relieve those cravings in short order.
Gingko biloba, Siberian ginseng and vinpocetine are great for improving cognitive functions in type B.
I always recommend to any of my type B friends feeling rather low-energy, that exercise is the key. And they say exercise is boring, besides they have no energy to exercise. At which point, I hit them with the Tibetan 5 Rites. It's a fascinating little practice which takes just a few minutes and does wonderful things. Write back and tell me you've tried it, and how you felt!
Thanks, Paul ~~ and my sincere wishes for your continuing great success! ;-D
Hello ^heidi^, In the enclosed attachment (if it got through) are the 1st 3 months of the year which you requested, less 1 hour due to tonight's switch to daylight savings time. I hope you find this found time useful....I wish it really could be given to you. I rarely write you but often read. One day, perhaps, I'll send a list of questions I've been accumulating about which I'm still unclear at that point. Thanks for all you do. Burke
Dearest, dearest Burke ~~ of course it would be you who came through in my hour of need. I am folding those three months away, wrapped in silk, and will think of you whenever I go to retrieve a few moments of your extraordinary gifts to me. Bless you, and may time be all you wish it to be! :-D
Janet's Constipation Remedy! ~ Belgian New-B! ~ and New O-Nonnie with candida
January 3rd, 2002 , by admin
Hi Heidi, I just read some of the back "columns" of On the Diet, and saw the one regarding Jim's problems with constipation. May I recommend a remedy that my naturopath gave me a few years ago that has worked perfectly every time I've used it?
You take a whole bunch of parsley, organic if possible, and chop it up coarsely. Throw it into a pot with at least 2 quarts (litres) of water (good quality, of course). Add a chunk of fresh ginger root that's been grated or chopped finely. Probably a piece 1" x 2" or so. Taste will tell the right size for the next time.
Bring to a boil, then simmer, covered, for 20 minutes. Strain the resulting brew into clean glass jars and take a cupful at least once a day. If the ginger is too hot to enjoy the experience, add a little water until it is less strong. This will last several days in the fridge. Someone once said they liked adding freshly squeezed lemon juice to the brew, and that, of course, will do no harm.
I hope this helps, not only Jim, but others with this rather common and persistent problem. Best of all, Jim, it's not an expensive cure and it's all natural ingredients, beneficial for most of us on the BTD. All the best, Janet
Wonderful, Janet! Many thanks, dear! :-)
Hello Godsent , Do you know the song 'heaven must be missing an angel'? You can't fool me I know it's you they are singing about.
My name is howard,I am 39 years old. I was born in Jamaica but am living in Belgium for the past 27 years.I have the best bloodtype there is 'B'.Secreter status unknown.
I started the diet a little more than a year ago.In General my health have improved .My skin is cleared from all bumps. My bad cholesterol has gone down by aprox. 60 points(167) .No more acid reflux. Weight loss 6kg. I am 1.81m and 77 kg.I am lean muscular and I look like when I was 18 again.Don't feel bloated anymore.Whenever I eat wrong my weight goes up almost immeadiatedly by about 2kg.Luckily it drops slowly back to normal after a week or so.
So whats my problem? I am SICK.What a nasty word for someone who erfht. I haven't been sick for the last year. And I tell everybody about it. And now the got me .I have a bad cold Heidi.I have been coughing and spitting up green and yellow mucous for 4 weeks now.Nothing seems to help.I even took Augmentin 875 (Antibiotic)for 10 days and it's still not gone.
People are starting to say that it's because of the diet.Even before I was on the diet I was never sick that long.Maximum a week.I don't have any fever, but my energy is very low and I lost 3kg even though I eat enough. Any wisdom or suggestion will be welcome.I ordered Healix Twice in march but it still hasn't arrived.Maybe they won't send it to Belgium. Anyway I'm sick and tired of this cold.I hope I don't have any underlyind illness. Lots of love to you and yours Howie.
A very warm welcome to you, Howie! Sorry it's under such trying circumstances!
It sounds like you got a lovely sinus infection. If you just feel weak, but have no fever, there are several things you can do to clear out the remaining mucus. I don't think antibiotics would help, so I wouldn't do another round.
First, go to a health food or supplement shop (or online), and look for a 'neti pot.' It's a little thing like a teapot, designed for delivering water into your sinuses. Use very warm water with a couple of pinches of sea salt. The technique of 'nasal irrigation' seems odd and awkward at first, but once you've tried it a few times, it's quite simple. Just lean your head back and to one side, and pour the water slowly up one nostril -- lean your head to the other side, then allow the water to flow out the other nostril, or out of your mouth (don't swallow all of it). I suggest doing this in a bath or shower in the morning, just because one tends to pour the water all over the place when first learning! ;-> It can clear out that gunk and make you much more comfortable -- and it's a preventive measure against future sinus problems, too.
While you're 'clearing out,' I suggest cutting back or eliminating cheese and milk. Type B generally does fine on dairy, but your body may not want it just now. See what you think. I would definitely take supplemental magnesium, around 600 mg twice daily, the same amount of Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticocus) and tinctures of magnolia and wild indigo, as recommended in the Sinus Health protocols linked here. While you're there, explore the Allergy and Antibacterial protocols, too. You can pick and choose, or just use the few things I mentioned above.
Take it easy, and have a regular sauna or steambath if you can ~ the heat is soothing and encourages the sinus tissues to 'water off' and expel the remaining mucus. Your weight loss is probably due to having less appetite ~ sinus infections do that. I remember it well! ;-) There have been a number of people writing in to say they've had odd, long-lasting ailments this winter, myself included! so do have faith in your diet (those people you mentioned will come around eventually ;->) and please do let me know how you're doing! :-)
and ... thanks for the angel song! :-D
Hi Heidi, Thank you for all your hard work.
I am a Type O non-secretor. I've been following the Blood Type Diet for two weeks. I have been 100% compliant.
I have the following questions. Note: I am trying to cure myself of an extreme case of candida. My urine has always been clear, but after I started the diet everytime I urinate my urine is yellow? Does this mean anything?
I like bananas, how many can I eat per day?
I eat 2 ounces of organic sesame seeds everyday. Is this ok and do the seeds carry mold?
I drink the correct amount of water for my body weight everyday. I am urinating more than usual. Am I losing all my vitamins because of frequent urination.
How long before all mucuos leaves the body? I would also like to know what your astrological sign is. Thank You Very Much, Malachi
Welcome, Malachi! I am sorry you're battling candida. It's a rough road, but you have the very best tools available here.
Yellow urine is actually normal. ;-) The change may be a result of more vitamins and spices in your diet. It's a good thing.
Since you're trying to re-balance candida, banana wouldn't be the first choice in fruits for you. It's OK, but I would certainly emphasize others -- for instance, berries, like blueberry, black cherry, elderberry, and cranberry for now. They're very healing stuff for the digestive and urinary tracts.
Two ounces of sesame seeds is fine, as long as you alternate with other seeds and nuts. It's easy to see and smell anything wrong with sesame seed -- just take a handful and make sure they are smooth and uniformly light-colored -- then take a big whiff. If you start sneezing, you'll know they're not fresh! ;-)
It will take time for your immune system to grow strong enough to expel the candida, but it will happen. If you can, find a practitioner who tests for heavy metals. Sometimes candida surges up in order to clean up excess mercury in the system, for example. If your heavy metal tests are normal, then I'd certainly use grapefruit seed extract daily, as well as the Yeast, Allergy and Intestinal Health protocols linked here!
I hope this helps you, Malachi! ... Oh, and I'm a Capricorn. Best wishes, and thank you for writing! :-)
Type O ~ Depression? ;-)
January 2nd, 2002 , by admin
Dear Heidi, Thank you for your daily column. It is such a pleasure to have you as a source of information and questions that are not in various books at our disposal.
I am an O (secretor unknown) and have a question about the propensity of bipolar symptoms in type O’s. I find that I get rather melancholy for weeks at a time, withdrawing from social situations, especially at work. Not that I claim to be bipolar but to some degree these symptoms arise. I seem to work my way out of it eventually and then all is fine. However, I always seem to slip back.
It’s not much of a problem from my standpoint, but people at work tend to notice and to them I look moody and perhaps alienate others from my apparent withdrawal. Is there anything natural I can take for this? I prefer not to go to my regular physician as she will certainly recommend products that I probably don't want to be comsuming at this point for such a minor problem. I just thought taking something naturally to regulate mood might be beneficial. I have taken St. John’s Wart in the past for something else and know this in an avoid for type O’s. Any other suggestions?
BTW, I am proud to proclaim I am a member of the successful liver/gall bladder flush club. Did it last weekend after much consideration and reading on the subject. It was terrific. I used almond instead of olive oil with a combination of grapefruit and lemon juice processed in a blender, as suggested by my father-in-law. It was easier to keep down than using olive oil. But I did feel very out of it the next day – almost like I was hung over. I felt very queasy and lethargic.
The next day was an entirely different story – I felt like a million bucks and still do. After a few days I can now say it was worth it and I will be ready to do my second flush in a couple months. I can already see the health benefits and know there will be more to come as I clean my system more thoroughly. Thanks for all your help and wisdom! -- Dana
Hi, Dana!
Staying away from MAO inhibitors like St. John's Wort is a good decision. The Encyclopedia also recommends that type Os experiencing depression or bipolar symptoms should avoid kava-kava.
The finest and cheapest mood-smoother is exercise. A brief daily workout works miracles on one's outlook. It regulates catecholamines and other neurochemicals and endocrine secretions, and aids the digestion and elimination processes ~ making Dana a glowier girl.
That said, I'm wondering whether the mood changes noticed by co-workers are merely a sign that you could use a little more solitude than you get there. Jobs differ and people differ, and if you aren't disturbed by those quiet times, then they don't bother me at all, either. ;-> In addition, if you are surrounded by busybodies and doomsayers at work, perhaps at least part of you isn't thrilled about being among them. This I don't know, but from the description you provided it sounds like the problem isn't yours, if ya know what I mean.
At any rate, do consume plenty of proteins, vegetables and good fats, include a daily whack of B vitamins, and energize with exercise. Stroll through the Protocols available on this site, if you'd like a little extra support.
Remember the oft-quoted phrase, "Illegitimi non carborundum" [modern usage, that is], and tell Gladys you feel JUST FINE!! ;-)
And CONGRATULATIONS on your successful flush! Neat, ain't it? Thank you for your note, and very best wishes, Dana! :-D
