Hello my dear Heidi!! Although I continue to read your column every day, it's been many, many months since I've written since it's taken me this long to finally do the gall bladder flush! I wasn't able to do it before I left for Spain back in August (although my sincere gratitude for your "rush flush" column anyway) and with my very busy schedule I just didn't have two whole days with nothing else going on until now.
I followed your 1/4/04 flush recipe with the following adaptations: - no apple juice or malic acid (decided to do the flush last minute and Whole Foods didn't have malic acid) - I ate only sweet potatoes, a carrot/squash puree and a small amount of brown rice in the morning/afternoon (stopping by 2pm) - I drank the epsom salt mixtures VERY cold with some freshly squeezed lemon juice (it didn't really taste bad at all that way) - I used freshly juiced (from my juicer) organic ruby grapefruit with the olive oil (which again, did not taste bad at all) The epsom salt drinks seemed to make me pretty bloated.
After the second half of the olive oil/juice mixture I immediately laid down on my right side (although several other flush sites recommended lying on your back I followed your advice instead) but didn't feel any of the internal movement I had expected and was even able to fall right asleep. I didn't have any bowel movements upon waking so I had the epsom salt mixture and went back to bed. Woke up again for the last epsom salt drink, still no bowel movement and went back to bed again. It took a couple of hours even after that before anything "flushed" so to speak and when it did, all I got we a couple of teeny, tiny, green clumps that were soft and mushy, not hard.
Later trips to the bathroom yielded only a few more of these very small green clumps. The remainder of the day I remained bloated and then developed a headache - perhaps from the lack of protein (I ate very lightly still refraining from protein and fat as recommended). Since I normally keep my carbohydrates to a bare minimum, two days of nothing but was a real shock to my system!
Well now it's the next day and I'm still bloated with a bit of that headache remaining. I can't decide if my flush was a success and who knows when another free weekend will present itself to do a repeat (with the malic acid, of course). Will this bloating go away soon? Does the fact that I only had small, soft green blobs mean that I don't have any real stones accumulated? I could really use some of that wonderfully warm Heidi reassurance! Thanks as always!! Well, that bloating (and the headache) is the result of slow-moving stuff in the intestine. What was released during the flush is hanging around rather than rushing out. As to the cause of the slowdown, believe it or not, I nominate the brown rice & veg combo. ;-> If you can do some juicing and add the soaked ground flaxseed in the morning for the next week, and do some walking or running (always worked nicely for me), it should bring you back to normal purty quick-like.
For your next flush, I suggest using fruit juices and veg juices only for the day of (or day before and day of), and after, the flush. For Os, if there is any sticky substance like grain sitting in the front of the line, it can tend to somewhat obstruct the swift elimination of the contents of the digestive tract.
But HEY! You did pass stones, and on the next try you should see bigger & better results, LOL. It's funny that you didn't mind the taste of the Epsom salts, which I must say I find ... how to describe it... vile? revolting? ... "challenging," let's say. Your relative indifference to the taste may be a sign you're low in magnesium generally (check your diet & supps and see if this rings a bell). A mag deficiency would also contribute to slow transit time after the flush. MORE ES 4 YOU! ;-D
That said, congratulations on doing your first flush! It's always much easier the second time. Do write and let me know how you feel after a few days, OK?
This question was recently asked in the January 2004 questions however no answer was given and I feel the question was an important one. I am a Type A non secretor and want to know if Royal Bee Jelly is good for my as well as other blood types. Will this be researched as the product information on this would open more doors on health. Hi, Jenaire ~ I don't know a thing about bee jelly except that, like bee pollen, sensitive individuals have reported allergic reactions to it. We have no rating for it, so until testing is done, there's not much I can offer there. Just exercise caution with it, as with all unrated foods & supps. :-D
Heidi, I'm an O (secretor unknown). I am on 75 MCG of Synthroid for my thyroid. I wanted to try the Iodine test. The first place that I went to find the Iodine was the Giant (grocery store), but they did not stock it. I then went to a Rite Aid and found Iodine Tincture, R.S.P. (Iodine 2%, Alcohol 47%, Sodium Iodine 2.4% and purified water). Will this work? What is the Lugol Iodine that Dorsa is talking about? Thank you, Joan
Hello, Joan! Yes, that regular old iodine you found is just fine for the purpose. It's what most people use. Lugol's iodine is 85% distilled water, 10% potassium iodine and 5% crystalline iodine, but plain drugstore iodine works perfectly for the little 'iodine test.' :-)

Hey there, Sandra ~ If you have a chest cold, I suggest quercetin, C, and Respiratone, as well as basic ABO vitamins and minerals. Proberry 3, both the syrup and the caps, are antivirals, protective against infection. Hope that clears up the confusion! and I do hope you feel better SOON! :-)
Hi, Heidi. Before I ask this question, please know that I have checked your archives and read the books thoroughly. I also follow this site regularly.. I just can't get one part straight. It is about food combining.
I have read somewhere on this site or in one of the books that Dr. D'Adamo has said that food combining wasn't necessary because adhering to BTD takes care of digestive issues. However, I have noticed that you have recommended it (I have gone to the site that you direct to so that I could get a feel for the practice of food combining) and I remember Dr. D'Adamo recommending that someone could do some "basic food combining" in order to solve some health/ diet issue..
I have to say that I have read what it is, but I have a hard time buying into it. Dr. Weil, whom I also read, says, "But from a medical point of view, there really is no reason to avoid any food combination except those that you find distasteful or physically unsettling. The human body is built to handle whatever foods you consume, regardless of whether you eat them separately or together." This seems to make the most sense to me (I think highly of Dr. Weil, even if he doesn't support the BTD).
I can't get this whole aspect straight in my mind. On one hand, it appears that Dr. D'Adamo doesn't believe that you need to food combine, on the other had, I believe that he has, at least occassionally, recommended it. What I have read about it seems so far fetched to me. It also seems like a royal pain in the patootie, especially the approach to eating fruit. Halloo, Rachel ~ For the ABO diets, actually there's no hard & fast rule on what to eat with what, or without what. In his practice, Peter found a percentage of patients did better separating grains and sugars from meats and other high-protein items -- particularly, by not eating large quantities of grain AFTER eating a full portion of meat. Others found that doing the 40-30-30 thing in each meal kept their blood sugar steady like nothing else.
Most didn't notice a difference one way or the other, so you'll hear us suggest one thing to one person, and another to someone else -- it's all based on what his or her body likes best.
If you find it makes no difference in your comfort and speed of digestion, then eat fruit whenever and in whatever combination you prefer. It's a personal choice, and experimentation will allow you to figure out what works best for you. Especially when embarking upon a no-grain/sugar existence, it's less tasking to let other foods take their places as they will. Once the grain/sugar-free habit is effortless, then you can think about tweaking elsewhere -- only if you find it benefits you! Blessings, and stay shiny!
