Dear Heidi, I have been going through a tough time recently health wise. I have been suffering from really painful sciatic nerve/muscle pain in my left hip - really for a number of years. It got really bad in December and so I decided to figure out what is going on.
I have had multiple MRIs and have just finished a batch of intestinal tests like colonoscopy etc. as I have digestive problems as well. I am waiting for all the results. Dr. D'Adamo diagnosed me a few years ago with IBS. The rheumatologist was convinced I have a type of inflammatory arthritis but the MRI came back totally clear. I do not have the results from the Gastroenterologist.
I have just come off a month of prednisone ( very low dose ) - and am on a low dose of an anti-inflammatory called Bextra. I am hoping they will figure out my hip pain problem - it is near impossible for me to exercise - I am only 34 and am an O non-secretor - really benefit from exercise.
The medication I am on makes me very constipated and bloated but it allows me to do some exercise and have less pain. I also have rosacea and my skin breaks out horribly if I eat any kind of carb or sugar (even too much fruit) - on the anti-inflammatory my skin is clear.
Is it possible to get bad joint pain and rosacea from an unbalanced digestive system? I know that when I do the blood type diet, my skin is clear and I am not bloated - still have constipation problems and my hip is still painful. Any ideas what could be going on? If your MRI is clear, there are a number of ways to look at the sciatica. It's possible that your posture can be improved in order to relieve the pressure on the nerves -- there are some good tips on this page, particularly the link to the exercise page. Do only those movements which don't stimulate the pain -- that sounds elementary, but it's worth the reminder! ;-) Do you sit or stand for most of the day?
Reflexology and acupuncture are two other effective treatments. There is also an experimental treatment called Neurotopic Injection, but it appears that double-blind studies may still be in progress. NI delivers tiny amounts of saline right into the muscle tissue near where the sciatic nerves enter the spinal column.
Which leads us to the next possibility -- dehydration. Are you doing the electrolyte-loading technique (1/2 oz of water per lb of bodyweight daily, with lemon squeeze or salt pinch added)? SO much back trouble is caused by dehydration alone that this simple technique can clear a number of problems on its own (not to mention its effects on the skin and the digestion).
Natural anti-inflammatory agents like quercetin, in combination with bromelain, can be used freely to soothe rosacea and inflammation of many kinds. Manganese supplementation boosts the stability of weak ligaments.
I certainly suggest a twice-daily juicing schedule, and a large raw salad daily to get elimination moving along. You might also benefit from a gallbladder flush, as it aids digestion and tends to clear the skin and various pains arising in the back.
